Hello there folks it is the same man of a different name: Seneca the man with the dulcid Geordie tones. Formerly known as:

    "no. 139674"
    "Oy you, come back here!"
" Hieronymus Karl Frederick Baron von Munchausen"

and well I guess some called me El Guapo somewhere or other.

As I sat there contemplating trying to write without an accent sweat broke out on my brow and my fists clenched. Anxiety gripped my heart as my restless eyes wandered over the contents of the mudpit. Nations falling - neh very continents falling in my minds eye as people predict the fall of our most prestigous civilisations. Oh woe is us indeed. So with no delay here is the Thema Devia section, read on with haste who knows how long ye have.

"We are in a state of civil war, orchestrated by radical Islamists," said Michel Thoomis, secretary general of the Action Police trade union. "This is not a question of urban violence any more. It is an intifada, with stones and firebombs."
Don't worry about the world coming to an end today. It's already tomorrow in Australia.

What could challenge the might of the USA? Surely nothing but could they derogate in a pile of their own potato chips? What will happen when they finally sell Hollywood brick by brick to Bollywood? Who knows, you?

On that note is it right to bash America and not bash France, let us have a non biased objective debate on this ignoring the fact that everyone dislikes George Bush and we all secretly think France Deserves it can we truly stand such hypocracy?

However, usually criticism of France is completely unjustified and factually innacurate, not to mention very offensive to Frenchmen because of the bashing of the French citizen incorporated in most anti-france posts. There have been some concerns about moderation especially in regards to the Thema Devia, it is worth noting I feel that moderators are not aloof in fact we are all eminently approachable and (if I do say so myself) nice people. So if things get heated and we step in, or we make a decision you don't agree with then approach us.

Thanks Folks thats El Guapo/Seneca done.

    by Tecumseh

Greetings, Helios readers! Hooray for sports! Huzzah!

*sigh*…..Who am I kidding? Most people who go on video gaming forums don’t usually like sports. That includes playing and watching them. But, whether you realize it or not, there is actually a sub-forum on TWC dedicated entirely to the physical activity known as “sports”. It’s true! And I, Tecumseh, am here to report on that very section.

As maybe 5% of you are aware, the World Series have ended with the Cardinals of St. Louis emerging victorious over the Detroit Tigers. This surprised me enormously, because the last I heard the Tigers were one of the, shall I say "crappiest" teams out there. So, good job Detroit Tigers for getting better, I guess…..may you create as glorious a legacy as the Detroit Red Wings .

The NHL season is under way, and Buffalo looks like the team to beat this year as they are undefeated(last time I checked). And as Last Roman has pointed out, the Minnesota Wild are undefeated at home. Looks like it will all be up to either the Toronto Maple Leafs or the Detroit Red Wings to defeat these supposedly undefeatable teams, because as everyone knows, they are the two greatest, coolest, and undeniably “radical and awesome” teams out there.

The NCAAF and NFL threads remain active.

There is an interesting little thread, that I am giving my weekly “Honorably Honourable Mention Award” to, and that is the Who is your favorite snooker player? thread. It has a poll choice of 13 of the supposedly best snooker players out there. I think snooker is pool. I didn’t even know there were 13 professional snooker players. I didn’t know the name of any of them. So this thread gets my award because it taught me something new, and made my life that much more full and happy. Thank you.

Until next week, keep your stick on the ice.

    DEFCON - Everybody Dies
    by Introversion Software

"It's Global Thermonuclear War, and nobody wins.
But maybe - just maybe - you can lose the least."

DEFCON is a deeply pessimistic and incredibly fun little game on the subject of complete nuclear annihilation. If you didn’t take nuclear war seriously or really understand the concept of MAD (mutually assured destruction), a brief spin with DEFCON will both entertain, educate, and freak you out — and, if you’re like me, satisfy your inner Kim Jong Il complex as you vaporise such cities as London, New York, Seoul, Moscow, and Beijing. It features a chilling, well-fitting soundtrack, crisp, simple graphics resembling futuristic versions of the “war rooms” in classics like Dr. Strangelove, and far more depth and strategy than you would expect. Download the demo immediately and enjoy. Introversion Software is definitely a company to watch on the RTS scene.

    Book of the Week
    To the Last Man
    by Jeff Shaara

Spring 1916: the horror of a stalemate on Europe’s western front. France and Great Britain are one side of the barbed wire, a fierce German army is on the other. Shaara shows us the otherwordly tableau of trench warfare through the eyes of a typical soldier experiencing the bizarre and the horrible . . .

You may know Jeff Shaara for his Civil War-era works such as Gods and Generals. To the Last Man was his first foray into the morass of World War I, and he delivers on it, providing not only well-researched historical fact and plenty of interesting details you probably didn’t know, but also a compelling narrative about the average soldier’s experience of the First World War, the horror of its battles and its politics alike, and its impact on the course of human history. It’s an excellent novel, worth a read from anyone interested in historical fiction and World War I.

    Movie of the Week
    The Prestige

Released very soon after similar movie The Illusionist (which was also quite excellent), The Prestige is the work of several people who proved they could make a good movie with Batman Begins - Christopher Nolan directs masterfully, and Christian Bale and Michael Caine also star. The film, in fact, has an absolutely stellar cast - Hugh Jackman, David Bowie (yes, David Bowie ... looking nothing like himself, I didn't even recognize Ziggy Stardust), the ever-sexy Scarlett Johansson, and even Andy Serkis. The movie is excellent in almost every way, which a great score, a great story, incredible cinematography and all-around fantastic production. I can't say too much about the movie without spoiling it, but it twists and turns masterfully without falling in on itself in confusion (a la The Matrix). The Prestige is a definite must-see.

    Enslaved by Brand Recognition

I’m sure most of you are familiar with the relatively modern phenomenon of designer clothing — the actual clothing doesn’t particularly matter, it’s the name stamped on the label. If you have two identical pairs of jeans, one of which is a store brand and the other of which has a designer label that’s supposedly cool, why one are you more likely to buy? If you spend a lot of time in public, you’re almost certainly going to pick the more expensive designer jeans.

I used to think this was something that only applied to those popular media *****s who rule the roost in your average high school; I thought it applied to the endless soccer moms and SUV families but not to me. Mostly, I thought brand recognition — buying something because of its brand out of blind habit — didn’t really exist. I managed to prove myself completely wrong in a store a few days ago . . .

I needed a hoodie, a windbreaker/coat sort of deal, and new shoes. Completely unconsciously, I bought an Adidas hoodie, an Adidas windbreaker, and guess what? A pair of Adidas shoes. Now, I’m not trying to belittle Adidas here — the coat and shoes are sexy, to be sure — but it brought to my mind with a sudden jolt that I was ... oh god! ... enslaved by brand recognition.

A quick check of my material possessions has revealed all the things I own with the stripes proudly emblazoned upon them:
    • Adidas soccer ball
    • Adidas soccer shorts
    • Adidas soccer cleats
    • Adidas soccer socks
    • Adidas sneakers
    • Adidas coat
    • Adidas hoodie
    • Adidas deodorant

You may be quick to dismiss this as coincidence, or simply that Adidas makes damned good stuff (no, I’m not being paid a single penny to say that), which they do, but the reality is that I am nie blindly buying things because they came from the factories of Adidas. I don’t know where it comes from — maybe my schoolmates have Adidas shoes, maybe I watch too much football, or whatever. But I managed to single out specifically Adidas things from all the other products, and that, to me, is a little bit disturbing. It’s bit like being manipulated by some horrific 1984-esque government, except that I’ve voluntarily allowed myself to be enslaved to brand recognition. Hey, I even have an HP laptop in an HP laptop case.

So before you buy whatever it is you’re going to buy, consider your freedom! (This has been a broadcast of Justinian and should in no way be construed as shameless advertisement, unless I’m unconsciously advertising, in which case, death to the imperialist pigs who run television).

Crappy Detroit Tigers, last time I checked them and the St. Louis Cardinals are crappy, good read, although I wonder how many will get the Steve Jobs joke.

I no longer want to see Tecumseh doing anything remotley close to sports if he thought the Detroit Tigers were crappy. Well known opinions of sports broadcasters was that the Tigers were the team to beat this year. The Cardinals were underdogs in every single post season game, yet won anyway.

I guess I'm the only one who cares about facts.
