Default What do I need to do to my pc so Medieval II will run on high settings with NO lag?

Hi I love the graphical qualites that are in medieval II and hate the lag that it imposes! i want to exploite the game to its full potential in this area and was wondering what i would need to upgrade in my pc to do this. My specs are:

    Pentium 4, 3.40Ghz processor

    1Gb or RAM

    Radeon X600 256Mb HyperMemory

This should be moved to the basement. But, I am presuming, a very hefty overhaul. Give the good people at the basement a budget, and they will build you the best comp for the money.

    Easy:

    1. Most importantly: Go to the ATI.com site and buy a better card...I strongly suggest at least a Radeon X1600 Pro 512meg card. That's the card I'm using now and it's great. But, whatever card you pick, it should support at least Shader 3 and have 512 megs.
    2. Your RAM is probably sufficient, but, if you want, add another 500 megs of RAM, or, better, one more gig.

    That should do the trick.

Each component can give you framerate boosts in different areas:

Upgrading your CPU will reduce lag when there are a HIGH number of units on the battlefield.

Upgrading your RAM by adding another 1GB will allow you to run high texture settings in the graphical options, and may reduce lag in other areas where a lot of textures and other things are loaded into the RAM.

Upgrading your video card will give you general better framerates and allow you to turn up resolution, unit details, lighting, etc, without compromising a lot of performance. It will even allow you to turn on Anti Aliasing and Anisotropic filtering, which IMO make a huge difference.

First thing you should upgrade is your video card. If you can give me your budget, I may be able to help you further.

update your gfx card to a nivida 7 series or a ati x1000 series

add an extra gb of ram

    your cpu is ok

at the lowest price a gb is 30pounds, but then again it will be the cheap stuff.

the gfx card, the best of the x1000 series is like 500 pounds, a decent one, is 150 pounds, dont buy anything lower then an x1650 if you go for the nivida 7 series, same pricesing, dont buy anything lower then a 7600gt

so id say about 200 pounds in total

ram yes, turn off, push in, turn on.

graphics card theirs more too it but pritty easy. uninstall graphics drivers, put in new card, install new drivers.

ram is universal just make sure its PC and not laptop ram so you dont need to worry to much about what you buy as long as its a gb

graphics cards, only buy ether nivida or ati, and find out if your motherboard is PCIe or AGP and then make sure the card you buy is the same.

it will be on the box if you still have it, if not

right click on your desktop, then go properties, then settings, then advanced

then somewhere on the top tabs you should see your current graphics cards name, click that and then you should get a little summery, go down to where it says "Bus" and it will say AGP or PCIE

which ever one it says you will need to make sure your knew card is the same type.

if its AGP then its old and it might be worth getting a new PCIE mother board, all the good graphic cards are only PCIE

Upload the image to a website, like imageshack...

save the image from paint, to your desktop, go to imageshack.us, upload it, take the straight url, (www.imageshack.com/image124312089490218 etc) and put it between [img][/img]

Everyone, especially LoZz, has giving you good advice. Above, you stated, "I want to exploit the game to it's full potential in this area...". Unless you build/buy a totally new system, as PhyrrusIV gently alluded to, you will never be able to achieve your goal with your current system and 3-400 GBP's. Game play can get much better with the suggested upgrades, but aside from more RAM and a new GPU you'll also probobly need a more powerful PSU to drive that new GPU as well. A new processor may also mean a new mainboard, potentially.
I hate to say it, but in the end, after all the upgrades, your current processor is probobly going to be your Achillie's heel that keeps you from your stated goal of playing M2TW with maxed out graphics and no lag....(which is probobly going to be pretty tough for any of us!)

Hmm must be a PCIe? Don't think graphics cards use PCI slots, only NICs and Audio cards...
If your motherboard is old it could been a AGP card, but doesn't seem so..

There are videocards that use the PCI bus.. I just don't think there's a PCI X600.

This whole "does he have AGP/PCI-Express?" fiasco can be solved with a simple download of Everest or CPU-Z.

    Never heard that before.
