    Default Musketeers

I just played Otumba and I noticed something strange. I put my musketeers on the top of the little cliff to have a better and safer position and gave them the order to fire at will. During the whole battle they just 1 of the 2 units fired just 1 single time. And that was it. I noticed that when they are taken under fire by enemy achers they will not fire. The hits from the arrows underrupt the action of them to aim and take a shot.

    Anyone noticed it to?

Yep, they try to keep the formation and switch ranks all the time, archery fire makes them useless. I hope they work better in full version.

Yeah, I mentioned the problem in the Good/Bad thread. It is a problem with the animations/formations obviously, as they will "hang up" as soon as they loose men. The survivors of the first row want to go to th second row, but the second row men are still there, resulting in two units being at one position, thus rendering the unit useless. The only way to fix this thus far is to manually click on stop. This however should really be fixed, as it is an annoyance.

plus musket fire has little to no arc. placing them on top of a large cliff renders all lines except the first useless, since that same cliff is obstructing their line of fire. I made the same mistake you did on the first go.

It doesn't matter if you obstruct the other lines since only the front ranks fire so placing them on hills will make them alot more effective.

    Also turn off skirmish mode.
Skirmish mode makes your musketeers fire at will and thus remove the entire rank firing at the same time.

    really?
so stretching your musketeer unit as wide as possible makes them most effective?
and what do those other lines do then, if you decide to have them 5 ranks deep?

Well if you stretch your line out, more guys will fire thus more power.
If you have it at 5 ranks deep then it means less people will fire and because of the animations, they will have to walk past 5 lines before the front can fire.
So I recommend 2 ranks which is was long as you can get it.
Alot of guys fire and the rate of fire is faster.

Note that on Otumba the musketeers start with fire at will mode disabled. I played the level 2 times without realizing this.

    Default Musketeers/Arquebusiers.

Well I wanted to post this thread to ask anyone about these units...

I know I mentioned in the past what I think is annoying about those units: Rotating and automatically facing the enemy by themselves breaking my formation.

But I also noticed that for some reason they fire whenever they feel like it...

In an unscripted battle of Agincourt I moved my units to the woods and when I got to my intended target they would fire every so often being inches away from the enemy...They did not have allies in their line of fire or anything that made me think that wouldn't make them fire. The unit was halted...anyone seen any issues with the firing units?

Oh no, archery might actualy *gasp* inhibit the free motion and action of you're units!!! Good god, that actualy happens in real life!!! NOOOOO!

    These things you can avoid.
    Turn off skirmish mode.
Skirmish mode makes your musketeers "fire at will" meaning each soldier fires whenever he is ready instead of waiting for the others.

Note that with skirmish off, the icon that says a ranged unit is firing will disappear when the line is rotating from front to back and when the unit is ready to fire again, the icon will reappear. It was strange at first but if you pay attentoin to it, it is exactly that.

In MTW, three ranks deep was the best because, while the first rank was the only one to fire, after firing, they retreated to the last rank.
