Default unspecified error + logging help

hi, ive played vanilla since pretty much release on and off, ive just come to play again and re-installed but as soon as i enter a battle i get the unspecified error.

ive tried to enable error logging so i have something to post here but doesnt seem to be working for some reason.

ive looked through the internet and tried a few things, none of them have worked so far.

win 7 x64, vanilla mtw2 - run as admin + compatability. its a retail disc version not steam

    any help greatly appreciated!

    thanks.

I have Win 7, 64bit, Run as Admin, Compatibility, original discs, plus disabled the UAC, taken ownership of C: drive, and installed it in C:\Games before buying a second harddrive and installing it in D:\Games.

When you edit the medieval2.preferences.cfg for any reason, and don't st the file to read-only, the game will overwrite it back to "default".

    1. Do you have any mods installed?
    2. What about custom field battles?
    3. Have you changed/upgraded/downgraded any hardware since your last ability to load a battle?
    4. Desktop or laptop?

thanks for your quick reply. whats UAC? ive tried installing it and another copy from a friend on both my drives, same result. it seems to perform fine in campaign map, i just cant battle... lol.

    1. no
    2. no
    3. no, however it has been back for repair since i last had the game installed, which included a format of the windows partition.

    3. Have you activated your copy of Windows, again, and run Windows Update manually installing all software options? Anything Bing not included? I doubt the shop would.
    4. Have you tried installing the laptop's latest drivers for Win 7? I have my doubts of a shop doing it.
    5. Did they clean out the inside and the vents, and check the fan(s) while they had it?

they had to take it apart and replace the mainboard so i assume they cleaned it out whilst doing it (less than a year old when it was done.. now approaching 1 year old) windows is activated yeah, however ill go through the windows update now.

i havent done the latest drivers no, the last ones i put on were on the cd that came with the laptop - will do that now also.

UAC and ownership done - will try it again shortly.

    thanks again

I would suspect heat. Some have had to invest in a cooling pad to play this game on a laptop.

Have you tried custom field battles with small unit size and minimal graphics?

i cant see this laptop ever having an issue with a 7 year old game.. can you recommend a temp monitor ?

it lets me do all but seige's so far, i havent done a huge test of different things though, however if i start a campaign as england, i can take york fine, but not caen i think it is? fails as soon as ram gets to gate.

Be surprised what this "old game" can still do. For a laptop, possibly HWMonitor or PCWizard.

    1. 9.8gb of free space on C: is not much and savegames can eat into it fast. If you ever wish to unpack, this game needs this much minimum to get the job done.
    2. The i5 can play this game by itself on lowest settings, battles being iffy.
    3. To get that 765M recognized by the game, be sure Windows power settings are for Maximum, the game's profile in Nvidia Control Panel is set to Maximum, and it would be wise to have it plugged in than relying on the battery.

for some reason it never, ever uses the dedicated gpu while doing dxdiag / windows score. i only ever play games while laptops plugged in else it eats the battery. thats an i7 too

do you think the low space may have something to do with it?

No, I don't think the game is using the dedicated gpu. I've seen less free disc space and still run fine.

Even being an i7, the graphics is killing it and the textures for settlements and castles the CA used are killers on weaker graphics cards/chips trying to fight battles. There is a mod for them that uses about one-sixteenth ram of what CA put in the game.

Its strange, according to nvidia software it's set to run using the Dgpu, could you tell or msg me the name / link of that mod so I can try that please?

temps appear normal while running too

I don't know what Dgpu is. Inside NCP > settings > 3d settings is a whole list under the programs tab including Medieval2 if I remember correctly. It's been over a year since my Nvidia card died.

http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showt...ld-Bare-Geomod A good place to start so you don't ruin your clean install.

Ok thanks, I'll check it out tonight when I'm home.

dedicated gpu, yep in that list it's got the dedicated as the default are to use, not the intel hd4600.

how do I get my error logs working? Might give me a clue as to the problem.

Thanks for for your patience and helpfulness btw
