If it was up to me, we would be getting something set around late 16th/early 17th century Europe. Also included would be parts of the new world, perhaps an Indian sub continent like we had in Empire and various trade posts around Africa and Asia. This would really be a dream come true for me, it's the sort of TW I've wanted for a long time now, just not sure what would be an appropriate name for such a game. Still, I'm open to other ideas. China, Victoria or even Warhammer would be quite interesting. Whatever happens, I would really just like something new.

I'd be quite happy with Empire 2 18th Century: improved graphics, accurate uniforms (perhaps evolving as well) and fortresses, a larger world map with land trading posts, more diplomatic features and more add-on campaigns with unique units, expanded maps (Peninsula War style). Easy to use unit and uniform editor.

I know a bit boring for some; but I'm one of those old farts who still wish CA could simply develop Empire into the game it should have been (still the most popular of the franchise, as I understand it)....

This too would be quite nice. Despite its many flaws, I like Empire a lot. Still, when I'm playing it I can't help but think things could have been so much better. Perhaps, if CA wish to carry on down the path of redemption (sorting out Rome 2) they might try and give Empire another go.

Well I was trying to look at things realistically, If CA were going to create a game focused on the 16th/17th century I believe they would leave out the first half of the 16th century and have the campaign begin after the people you mentioned had left their mark on the world. But that's just me, of course including the entire 16th century would be so much better. Having a game that leads you from the very end of the medieval era through to the age of enlightenment would be just spectacular, especially when it comes to the evolution of your armies and units.

Heh, I don't know, to me that would be like making a Napoleonic game that started in 1815 =). If the game had to have 150 years instead of 200, to me 1500-1650 seems much more cohesive than 1550-1700. Also, by 1650 most of the major events in this timeframe have ended or are about to end (30 years war/peace of westphalia, English Civil War, the Deluge, 80 years war). 1500-1650 pretty much also coincides with the rise and end of the dominance of the Habsburgs in favour of the french.

Don't get me wrong, I'd much prefer a 200 year game (i'd love to wreak havok worldwide with some fresh dutchmen), or even better a 250 year game that started around 1450 and let us relaunch the byzantine empire, establish Burgundy as one of the major central-european powers, keep the muslims alive in Spain or try to alter the end of the 100 years war. That said, i feel like 1650-1700 would be somewhat similar to Empire TW and the main features of this period are fairly well represented in that game (linear warfare, colonial conflicts, french dominance, etc), while the early XVIth. century was too poorly portrayed in the endgame of Medieval 2.

But in any give case, i just feel like the the period starting roughly after 1492 is just too critical to be left out. Also, take into account that one of the main military features that would distinguish the gameplay of this game from other TW (pike&shot warfare) developed after the Battle of Seminara (1495) and was getting outdated by 1650. Warfare prior and following this period has already been covered in other Total Wars for the most part (Medieval 2 and Empire).

A 250 year game would be too epic to be true, but i think a 1492-1700 game is realistic and would awesomelly fill the gap between those 2 games.

Agreed, an reworked Empire covering 17th to 19th century, supporting several theatre, with regular DLC for new periods/maps would be nice.
Like they could start with Europe, then make a DLC to add North America, but instead of a separate campaign and a separate map, it would just "open" a new theatre, with connected map like in Empire. Later they can add India, etc.
And DLW with new campaign, same base maps, but updated names / faction owners and so different starting position.
If the maps have enough region to start with, there's a lot of possibilities.

Of course, a good editor (map, db, and uniforms) would make it perfect.

I think it'd be great if they used NTW's turn system too, with one year being several turns rather than just two. It'd be more realistic, since armies take months to move not years.

I have the idea. Let's ask them to make a 1492-1700 game for you, and a 1700-1900 for me. Deal?

Well it certainly sounds as though you know what you're on about so I'll take your word for it . Whatever the case, I think we can all agree this is most definitely the sort of Total War game we need, it really does seem to be the only style of warfare CA have yet to cover in one way or another, having armies in Shogun 2 that consist entirely of yari and matchlock ashigaru does not count! It is fun to pretend though.

CA could please everybody and make a killing by having the base game cover 1492-1700 and having your 1700-1900 campaign included in the inevitable expansion.

It'd be interesting if the game was during the reign of the Ottoman Empire. Starts at 1453, and ends at about 1600. That way we could try epic battles such as Malta.

My best bet would be Warhammer.

My hope is for another Empire Total war era game. I personally liked the muskets-cannons style gameplay more than the other gameplays so far.

My belief is however that they will be doing a 3-Kingdoms era game. Which would be fine, I'm not completely opposed, and can see the appeal of it.

If I was a betting man, and was taking the over/under bet. My money would be on a Rome II expansion style game like Napoleon was. Something much more polished, refined, w/limited map.
My guess would be Alexander. W/limited Greek-Middle East area refined map.

I hope for Victoria TW. Would be easy to push in a DLC for the Civil War to please that crowd as well. I'd just love to see a TW game that incorporated more features around the infrastructure and population management of running a country. Nothing near the complexity of Paradox games, but something deeper than we have today.

Lot's of you have some real strong opinions here on your prediction for big announcement. We have a brand new site wide poll set up on the subject. Head on over and cast your vote on what you think CA will tell us on the 25th. Feel free to continue the discussion here or in the poll thread.

It's very likely to be Warhammer: Total War, but I'd prefer it to be Medieval III!!

If they announce a Warhammer TW, it might be the first TW game in over 10 years that won't find its way onto my hard drive on the release day.
I'm not even remotely interested in that scenario...

    Warhammer looks/sounds awesome:

The best thing about it is the fact that people won't be able to moan about historical accuracy.
