    Default Custom Battle AI

Playing Custom Battles on Gold, i have noticed that the AI is alot more passive. Whereas before they would have simply charged up the hill and engaged me, they are now waiting at the ottom of the hill and letting me shoot them to pieces. I play defensively, so perhaps that is the problem.
One battle, where you are at the top of the hill with culverin fighting the spanish i have played on both demos; the first one thy charged straight into me and overwelmed my pikes, destroying me. This time they charged a single unit of bucklers into my pikes and otherwise just stood there. I am wondering if this is the evolution of the battle logic mentioned my Palamedes? Anyone else having this problem?

The passiveness is related to what Palamedes mentioned in his post.
According to him this is fixed and will be in a patch available on the release date.

Well, I'm definately impressed with the AI's flanking attempts, archer usage, and willingness to protect it's general. I've played several HUGE battles, several of which lasted for 30 an hour to 1 hour each (the giant bridge battle using the tutorial map between the french and english). The AI often surrounds it's king with noble infantry, and will move the king to a better protected place when attacked. Only near the end of the battle did the AI actually charge it's king (like what I do when I play). Several times I would have a solid front, be hacking at the AI's line, and suddenly fire arrows FROM BEHIND ME would start coming down...the AI had somehow sneaked them around me through the forest! May have been a coincidence but it was a damn life-like one! I do agree the AI does tend to passive behavior, but, I think this maybe due to the demo and to a bug CA mentioned that they have already fixed. Overall I"m very impressed.

Ok, thx for clearing that up.
Yes, i very much agree, the AI is very good now. The first time i played a custom i was completely overwhelmed by it and taken off guard. This was against the full bodyguard army, so by the time i realised what it was doing i was dead
It feels horrible playing RTW now, the graphics just look dreary and sad compared to the life in M2TW, and the AI is just depressing to play against. I wasnt sure i really would enjoy M2, but i think i can say now, as long as the campaign map is good, alliances hold, and there is a little more diplomatic depth to the game that i will be very happy.

Oh, can someone link me to the bridge battle please, im guessing it will be in the Custom Demo thread, but 18 pages to sift through seems pretty daunting :S
    thx

On the point of Custom Battles, how exactly do I get them? I have the Gold Demo, but there is not option for cutom battles (only Otumba, Pavia & Agincourt).

The AI sometimes is wildly intelligent and does some pretty flanking maneouvers that make me go "hey! I woulda done that too!". But i've played some more battles and noticed rather dumb behaviour.

    EXAMPLE

ME: general, 4 zweihanders, 4 arqebusiers
AI: foot general, 8 heavy billmen (attacking)

The AI, having an infantry advantage, you would expect it to make the smart move and begin charging towards my lines the moment my arquebusiers would begin firing. This is obviously the best thing to do, since if your can force the aquebusiers back you can pretty much negate my gunpowder advantage and overwhelm my zweihanders.

But the AI didn't. The AI marched right up to within range of my guns and just stood there. My arquebusiers just fired volley after volley and the AI took it. In fact I was able to wipe out half the bill men and the general with my arquebusiers. Stupid.

But then I reloaded this battle up again. The AI did the same thing. They marched within range and just stood there. So I decided to see what would happen if I recalled my arquebusiers. I tell them to stop firing and run them behind my zweihanders and keep them there. The moment my arquebusiers finish moving back and keeping idle the billmen immediatly charge my zweihanders!! They are also able to beat me after routing 1 flank unit of Zweihanders.

I'm almost 90% sure this passive behavior is a bug. It really doesn'y make sense to see that the AI clearly knows it has to charge fast if it has an infantry advantage and I have a ranged one. But its just must be a bug that it just stands there and gets shot.

If this is indeed the bug Palamedes reported, then he said something like its because we are not moving the units. If we were to keep moving our men around they would respond normally, but if we just stand and wait, then they will simply stand there.
Its a shame, because i usually find myself a place to dig in and just wait, and i cant really do that in this case. Playing a battle against the english this happened, i started moving my general behind their lines to take out their archers and they began to mov again. They werent being smart, because they just ignored the general, although saying that, they saw my pikeline on one side of a cliff and began marching over to the other side, which was barely defended. I moved more men over to that side and they attacked the pikeline. Unfortunately, i was still able to rip them apart with cannon and archers, and got a heroic victory
