Understanding the .save file and extracting it's information.

Hello there, I'm looking for a way to be able to extract most of the information from a campaign save file and to understand all it has to offer.

currently, when opening a save file with EditSF there are just hunreds of categories that I can't really make sense of.

The most basic thing I'd like to be able to understand is where can I find the region ownership details (what factions own what region)

other stuff like income, where armies are, etc would be very useful too.

Is this information possible to extract from the save file? Thanks in advance.

Some of that information is going to be rather difficult to see in the save game. Army locations, for example, are a set of coordinates.

Most of the information for factions you will find under FACTION ARRAY (COMPRESSED DATA\CAMPAIGN_ENV\CAMPAIGN_MODEL\WORLD section).

This will tell you their armies, characters, technology, income, etc.

For Region ownership, you will want to look under REGION ARRAY. There will be a number in row 11 (I think) that refers to the Faction ID number of the owning faction. This number will be the first number listed under the FACTION entry in faction array.

Most of the save/startpos data is fairly esoteric and refers to various values either in the db (names, for example) or in other parts of the save (CAI sections). The best way to get the information you are looking for is to actually load up a fog of war removal mod with the game and then load your save. You should be able to see most of what you want with that.
