If I let my campaign start 500 bc. will it be approx. 1000 turns long then or is the duration hardcoded? Why do the events pop up at a much earlier time then although they are defined with a specific year and season?

Start and end dates are set at top of descr_strat - its not hardcoded..
Game translates that as 270BC to 14ADstart_date -270 summer
end_date 14 summer
The events are set in descr_events.txt
but there '14 summer' is the summer of the 14th year from the start of the campaign - regardless of what year the campaign started.event historic stoic_philosophy
date 14 summer
If you want a longer game but with the events occuring at the right historical times then try changing the end date and not the start date - an end date of 230 should give you your 1000 turns.
