So, no matter what I do, graphics settings turned down, no shadows, etc, the campaign map is extremely low FPS. Tried lowest resolution. Tried native resolution.

I loaded up the fraps overlay to check what it was and it's saying 6-7.

I don't have a great system for gaming -- integrated Intel graphics on a 2010 i5 laptop -- but the *battles* run just fine under Shader 2, bloom & reflections on, high texture settings, max grpahics options for vegetation, grass, etc. I'll get up to 20 FPS and I'm sure I could squeeze a few more but that's sufficiently smooth for me.

So, what is it about the campaign map that's so darn taxing? I don't remember running into this issue with native, or Stainless Steel.

I always have shadows off, campaign and battle.

In native I'm getting 15 FPS. Which isn't the best, but it's not very noticeable. At 6 to 7 FPS, it's extremely noticeable.

A major culprit on the strat map are terrain CAS models, especially animated ones. Your FPS should drop into the cellar over large forest areas and high mountains. The highest FPS willbe over large water areas.
Nothing much you can do there except reducing the resolution as suggested.

Ah, much thanks for the explanation.

It seems to be doing more okay these days, thankfully -- not too sure what changed. I don't suppose modifying the CAS models to become non-animated would be an easy change to make on my part?

Pain in the neck. Alternatively you could thin out large areas of impassable forest by filling it with 'plains' texture - or replace high mountains texture with low mountains texture, all in the map_ground_types file followed by deleting the map.rwm file to generate your new map.
