Al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri has announced in a videoed message the creation of an Indian branch of his militant group to "raise the flag of jihad" across South Asia.

In the 55-minute video posted online, Zawahiri pledged renewed loyalty to Afghan Taliban leader Mullah Omar.

Correspondents say his stated allegiance is an apparent snub to Islamic State (IS) militants.

IS is challenging al-Qaeda to lead worldwide Islamist militancy.

Announcing the formation of "al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent" using a mixture of his native Arabic and Urdu widely spoken in Pakistan, Zawahiri appeared eager to regain some of the limelight, correspondents say.

"[Al-Qaeda] is an entity that was formed to promulgate the call of the reviving imam, Sheikh Osama Bin Laden. May Allah have mercy upon him," Zawahiri said.

He urged the "umma", or Muslim nation, to "wage jihad against its enemies, to liberate its land, to restore its sovereignty and to revive its caliphate".

Zawahiri said "al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent" would be good news for Muslims in Burma, Bangladesh and in the Indian states of Assam, Gujarat and Jammu and Kashmir, where they would be rescued from injustice and oppression.

I am rather surprised why it takes so long for Al Qaeda to announce that; may be Pakistani military finally finish signing all the paper works. Either way, I am doubted it would be an easy pick for Al Qaeda since unlike soft people in East Asia, India does have famous anti-Islam experts in their state.

There is only one reason for this announcement, and it happens to deal with the ISIS. Al-Qaeda has been increasingly over-shadowed by the ISIS along with the fact many of Al-Qaeda top commanders have been killed. Its not that al-Qaeda has gained enough strength to form a clel in India, its that India is vunverbale to begin with. Mumbai showed us that. Al-Qaeda is tryign to stay relevant but the ISIS looks like itsgoing to be the "new Al-qaeda"

I am quite sure Tawian would be better off under Chinese rule. Why don't Jidhadis come into Taiwan? It makes proper sense then. India's fight with these people has been going on for a very long time. I was thinking the same thing.

Although al-Qaeda relies on Urdu speakers in Pakistan to an extent, it's mostly an Arab thing. Arab terrorist organizations that try to recruit non-Arab Muslims in various countries usually don't do so well in that endeavor. Usually. Take Indonesia, for instance, which at 246 million people is the most populous Muslim country (if one were to discount India, which is majority Hindu, but still has a massive Muslim population, i.e. 138 million)

By declaring a Jihad on India, that idiot is actually making life more difficult for Muslims in India than before, since Hindu-Muslim relations here are extremely sensative and even a slight hint of aggression can cause internal hatred to boil into bloody riots in every part of the country where Muslims are present. When there is any open hostility shown from Pakistan or a terrorist organization, Muslims here become more hated despite no fault of their own, and despite being peaceful.

Just a bunch of uneducated illiterate cowards who don't know their own geopolitical history, really. I doubt they would be able to do much in India even if they flock like sheep in numbers on the borders. After 2008, the Indian armed forces and the government in general has been very alert.

What's next, China? I recall some Muslim traders arrived in the modern Guangdong province during Tang Dynasty in 7th and 8th centuries to conduct trade, and settled in many parts of western China after Tang Dynasty collapsed. Will they claim entire China as a part of Islam and declare Jihad there as well?

And your impression is correct. Hindus, at least the Hindu monarchs since last 1300 years, have focused more on fighting each other rather than the enemy who appears on the horizon. This is what led to the Turks breaking the Rajput army in the Battle of Tarain, and again with the British, since both of them encountered splintered kingdoms fighting each other both culturally and militarily. Perfect place for divide-and-rule strategy.

It has become different these days, but Hindus (or for that matter, any Indian religion other than Sikhs) are still not as consolidated as Muslims. Sikhs, whose foundation itself was in the midst of war with the Muslims, have much better experience. But then there is the dangerous idea of independent Sikh nation, which can render Sikhs as much a threat to India as the Pakistanis or the terrorists, just like in 1980s.

That's what I noticed about many of these extremist Muslims: they seem to live in the 700s AD and have a severely twisted notion of other religions and groups. I gathered this from documentaries or talking to 'friends' of friends I have known. Which leads to me to think that law of solipsism is a powerful thing...
