Default What makes someone deserve the title of hero?

What is a hero? Some people may say someone like Michael Jordan, a famous athlete. Millions of children look up to him wanting to be just like him. Others say a hero is like Martin Luther King, Jr. who changed America, and subsquently the world, through sheer force of personality. Even others look at men like Audie Murphy, warriors who faced evil and impossible military odds. Many look at people like Lance Armstrong who overcame great odds to do great deeds. Then there are people who look up to Neil Armstrong who managed to be one of the few people to actually be the first person to find something new. But what, in your opinion, defines someone who truly deserves the title, "hero?"
“The nation that will insist upon drawing a broad line of demarcation between the fighting man and the thinking man is liable to find its fighting done by fools and its thinking by cowards.”

A hero is someone who has achieved something that he shouldn't have been able to do... according to the defeatist majority.

I beleive that a hero is someone who is looked upon as a person who has acheived something that is either notable of worth or notable of an accomplishment that you, yourself, wish to, or wish you could, reach. This definition of a hero can fall into many circumstances. That is why one who is viewed as a hero, may not be viewed as a hero to everyone. Just some.

A hero is a clear thinker that makes his decisions to do the "good" thing based on his own beliefs. Later in history he is rewarded the title of "Hero" because people can see the results of his feats. Unsung heros are never heard of.....

Heros arn't always good. They simply have to share your ideals.

There are three types of heroes imo

    1) Any man, women, or child that dies for their country or because of war(including terrorist attacks)

    2) I person who risks their lives to save another one

    3) This one has already been mentioned in this thread several times

I view 1 and 2 as "true" heroes. The 3 one is "human-made" heroes.(see flags of our fathers) We make them because they share our same ideals, they have furthered a cause we believed in, we "think" he did great things or overcame great obstacles, and we "want to be like them" thinking.

EDIT: Society wants heroes. We "make" them for hope or something to strive to be like. It is a pyschological tool of humans.
