M2TW installed using steam , but only the shortcut for non-steam works during start-up.

I don't know if this is a weird thing or not.
I bought M2TW using Steam and installed it with Steam, M2TW folder is in steamapps/common/ .
I installed EB2 without changing anything in the installer.
At first, both shortcuts (for non-steam and Steam) didn't work. Then I downloaded the text-fix file from this topic and applied it to my EBII/data directory.
I did not try the non-Steam shortcut but the Steam shortcut didn't work (I still had the GERR:GENERIC error). Then I changed the security settings .
I tried the Steam shortcut again and it didn't work, so I uninstalled EB2 and reinstalled it (without changing anything in the installer again).
Then I applied the text-fix folder to my EBII/data directory (this time EB2 had been reinstalled).
I tried the Steam shortcut but it didn't work, desperately I tried the non-Steam one and it started up successfully.
Hopefully someone could explain this situation.

Edit: However, the strat.txt thingies appear after EB2 being successfully launched. The GERR_GENERIC error happens occasionally .

When you say starting the Steam shortcut doesn't work, what precisely happens? Does a screen appear? Any error message?

Starting the game using the non-Steam shortcut will start the game, but several members have reported reproducible crashes which disappear when using the launcher.

The text fix is supposed to get rid of the GERR_GENERIC thing. Try to apply it again.

The steam shortcut targets the old Kingdoms launcher which is outdated/non-functioning after the 22/7/14 update
The second shortcut (non-steam, but it actually works for both) targets EBII's launch.bat which starts a work routine: it copies the medieval2.exe, renames it into kingdoms.exe and then executes it.

I have the steam version of M2TW and the 'non-steam' shortcut works fine for me, no text errors experienced

Not quite. It targets the launcher that gets installed as part of EB2, it's the launcher replacement you can find here. Not sure who made that. However, if there exists a launcher.exe in the folder, the installer does not overwrite it, assuming it's a disc install rather than Steam.

lmt96, you appear to have done everything right. I don't know why the text fix doesn't quite take for you.

@bovi: Oh yes sorry about that. The launcher appeared -> Play -> EBII . A screen appeared for a brief moment before an error message appeared: shared.txt:{GERR_GENERIC} . As for the text-fix , I've tried applying the whole folder to the correct directory (I believe, EBII/data), still the problem persists.

Right, I think I've got EB2 working fine, it's probably due to my machine.
I messed up my M2TW so I had to redownload it, however there was a problem with this new download -_- due to the inconsistent connection I have, somehow the files were corrupted. Later that day, I found out my Norton 360 had a problem as well, so I used my System Restore, back to before installing EB2.
I reinstalled EB2:
- The steam shortcut doesn't work at all: the launcher didn't even show up (even though its process is still listed in task manager)
- The non-steam shortcut works very well. I played for 2 hours and experienced no CTDs or anything weird.
