"He confessed to killing 300 people and also claimed a hand in up to 3,000 killings in the 1980s and 1990s. But he also gave evidence against an ex-justice minister convicted of ordering the killing of a rival.

Velasquez, 52, walked free from the Combita high-security prison on Tuesday to start a probation period of four years."

Seriously? A guy that has killed 300 people got out because he admitted that one of the murders he committed were at the orders of a minister?
Let this sink a while: -300 people-. That's a decent sized village with the kids and all.

He left with a police escort; If I was in the escort I would be honestly afraid. Either one of the other gangs would make a hit on him (and I'll be caught in a fight protecting a mass murderer) or some of the hundreds of families he harmed would attack but mainly... if that guy decided to make a run for it, or decided he wanted me dead, I knew he wouldn't be holding any punches and that he's seen more death than a WW1 veteran.

That guy killed 300 people. The scale is close to crimes against humanity. He wasn't "just" a murderer, he is a very, very dangerous man.

Who was tried, convicted, and served. That's how justice systems work. You don't turn around at the end of the sentence and change your mind.

Agreed. That's why you give him a life sentence instead of 24 years, with a few benefits if he talks about the minister like better cell or a better jail or something. You don't give that kind of person 22 years.

And he will 99% kill them all, easily. Unlike said grieving people, he has killed -300- people and took part in 3000 killings. He was a full time killer and he was fighting drug dealers and gangsters. Then he survived 22 years in jail where he probably had to guard himself from other gangsters. He's not someone a grieving father in his 60s can kill with ease.

They don't have a life sentence in Colombia. They can give a maximum 60-year sentence. Given he became an informant it's unsurprising a deal was struck. The sheer length and breadth of his (alleged) crimes, including blowing up an Airliner with 107 people on board, is... really something.

Sending down a JUSTICE MINISTER who is using murder as a political weapon is infinitely more important than keeping one hired thug in prison.

The guy served his time so I don't see a problem. Justice was served and he paid his dues so he deserves to be a free man.

Yeah, he served the time he was sentenced for... -300- murders. I mean, the guy that hired him to do one of the murders got 24 years and he got 22 for 300.

I don't think someone as dangerous and as clearly sociopathic deserves to be a free man. Out of the jail? OK, but he definitely needs to be kept in a psychiatric war. There's got to be something seriously wrong with him.

Yes, that's the point of this thread and why it's in the political section:

The Colombian justice system allows a mass murderer to walk after 22 years because he gave vital info. Conviction for 300 murders, took part in about 3000 more. And he gets free after just 22 years because the system there allows him to.

I understand the need for bargaining chip, but as I said, it could be more lax imprisonment or better cell or something. Not putting him back to society.

Although I can't say how a professional killer thinks, "Just 22 years" sounds kind of akward.

22 years is more than about 1/3-1/4 of the average human lifespan. Perhaps a good amount of time for someone to think about what he has done and perhaps make amends.

Not that I would feel safe if I knew a guy like him was just released and rent a house next to mine
