Default Medieval 2 Total War - Unspecified Error (Steam, TATW 3.2, MOS 1.6.2, Windows 8)

    Hello all,

Third Age Total War works on Steam. I downloaded 3.0 parts 1 and 2, and the 3.2 patch (3.1 is no more I guess?). I renamed Third_Age_3 to crusades and changed crusades to crusades_original. No problems on that end. However in the past I've already played TATW extensively and I would like to play the MOS version. When I started with 1.6.1 (downloading 1.5, 1.6 and 1.6.1) I installed it and made it to the very first loading screen with that shot of Helm's Deep. The ring started spinning as it loaded. Then, it crashes to desktop and I get an error saying "Medieval 2 Total War encountered an unspecified error and will now exit."

I tried using that cleaner application. It couldn't find four files, which I thought wasn't a problem. I am not sure where to install it according to the instructions outlined here (http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showt...1#post13507584). It wants to end with Sega but I don't have a Sega folder - I don't understand what I am doing wrong, perhaps I don't understand the installation instructions?

    I also found this: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showt...-Free-Gameplay
The G5BAISwitcher file was one of the ones I was supposedly missing, along with the map.rwm and the geography file (sorry for the vagueness, I've been doing this all day but didn't take a screeny at the time of the error). With regards to the instructions on post 2 of that link, I am not sure which file I'd be renaming, and if it'd help.

I am not very good at understanding how these mods work, so maybe it's all down to user error - I'm fairly certain there isn't a technological problem.

Thank you all in advance for your help.

Did you perhaps downloaded that latest M2TW Steam update? Also, are you trying to install MOS 1.6.2 ? It is a standalone version, that means you do not need any previous version installed.

How can I check if I have the latest version? Also, I am just using MOS 1.6.2, as soon as I downloaded it I got rid of all of the other versions.

Do you keep your Steam settings to automatically update your game?

You could verify your M2TW Steam game cache first, then install TATW ( all TATW .exe Installers have to have this at the end of Destination Folder:

    ..steam\ .. \Medieval II Total War )

Then, do not rename Third_Age_3 folder located in your \Medieval II Total War\ mods folder, leave it as it is.

Download this Universal Steam batch file and follow it's instructions: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?661279

Test can you start a campaign in TATW 3.2. If you can, I would make a backup of whole Third_Age_3 folder somewhere just in case you need it for anything.

Install MOS 1.6.2 + bugfixes. You can use my instructions which are just for MOS 1.6.2- post #3 ( but, these are not for the bugfixes aswell): http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showt...h-pictures-!-)

Use Universal Steam batch file again.

    Good luck!

The Steam Batch file works, that's a cool fix, I'm glad I don't have to rename any campaigns. Also, I was looking at the first post instead of the third when I originally tried to install MOS. However, the 1.6.2 links don't work for me - the Rapidshare doesn't have any data (?) and the MEGA link says that the file I am trying to download is no longer available.

I just used the torrent file (somehow I missed that earlier) and it all works now. Thank you so much!
