Annoying Steam Updates That Do Absolutely Nothing

Anyone know how to avoid this? Every now and then Steam says that there is an upgrade for my RTW 1 which I am fairly sure is a lie. For a game that's been out for nearly a decade, an update is highly unlikely. On top of that, I don't play vanilla RTW, so it's not like I need it even if there were some contents. It simply slows my internet down and is annoying.

Actually there have been several important updates recently, back at the end of July CA released a patch enabling MP support in Steam and added several language localisations unfortunately this caused some serious problems for the game but CA has been trying too fix these with their most recent hotfix just yesterday, now you could try changing your Steam settings to prevent automatic updates or play in offline mode but at some point Steam may prevent you from playing until you have updated the game.
