Actually, if they were acquired by Intel then it might be better. I will explain. What if AMD decides to make the new ATi cards (well I mean AMD cards) only compatible with AMD processors? The Conroes kick Athlons ass but quite a large margin, in fact its not worth getting anything more than a Athlon 3800 X2 as anything more expensive just gets raped by its Core 2 equivalent. And Currently ATi's are better than nVidia's, I would hate to have to buy an over priced under perofming Athlon just to run an ATi now AMD GPU!

Actually when those things come out, it's a new gen (DX10) and NVidia might or might not catch the upper hand. So we don't really know. Currently, Ati is better (hi-end), but at the time of 7800, NVidia was better. And NVidia is once again coming out with their DX10 cards first, just like with 7-gen and X1000-gen.

Even someone without any business sense can see that that idea would be absurd. You'd destroy yourself financially. Capitalism dictates the need for adaptibility and competition.

On another note, D/C Opterons are now dirt cheap, and are indeed worthy alternatives to the low end X2 line...

I think ATI forgot to ask "whats the catch" when they received 5.4 billion dollars from AMD. ATI as a brand will probably die out and be replaced with something that suits AMD.

I'm a little excited about this acquisition/merger. I would like to see what AMD/ATi can do.

The merger will mean a better streamline between processor and video card makers. So all of the secrets between the 2 companies can be shared. Also, AMD may have bought them so that they can take the profits and spend the money on going after Intel for future endevaors.
