If it was Vergina and not Amphipolis that would have made perfect sense actually!

Yeah, that was my immediate thought too.

I saw one commenter on an article try to seriously make the case it has a legit chance at being the tomb of Atilla the Hun...

My lack of knowledge regarding his life makes it impossible for me to debunk that, but I'm curious as to why he'd be buried in a tomb that shows Hellenistic heritage, and which has been dated to something akin to 700 years before be existed :p

The closest to the region would be Democritos of Abdera, but i really doubt it is his tomb- although he was massively popular in the 5th century BC.

I may be wrong...But the arch in the door makes me suspicius.
    Let me explain.
Arch was known in ancient Greeks (dome too) but they were now used (untill today only a Mykenean tomb has dome).
As an historian notticed the two Sphinx have their wings broken.
    That can mean two things
1st: Their wings were pointed to the space outside the arch.
2nd: They were moved to the tomb as a later addition and the workers had to brake their wings in order teh sculpures fit to the door.
    Lets imagine the facts:
The tomb was indeed created for a Great Macedonian person the same timeframe Alexander lived or died.
Lets supose that it was used by those the tomb created for!
The arch though adds a delima.
What IF a Roman official learned about the tomb (remember that the Lion taht was on top of the tomp was founded in great distance from the tomb), and broke in either to find out who the user was or to plunder it? What about if that Roman desided to re-use that magificent tomb for his own?
In that option there would be justified the arch and the extra wall that covers the entrance.
But all these are only guesses before the tomb wil be opened. History proved many times that is full of surprices!!!

    EDIT:
I heard they already opened the tomb and found a the body holding a protoslavic dictionary, a map of Makedonia signed Alexander Philipovic and a sign that says "Salon for FYROM! Greeks out now!
The truth is that historians found a cd in the tomb created and signed by God Himself telling humanity that Macedonians are the 1st people He created!!

As for Alexander's tomb rest assured, it was either in Egypt or in FYROM

Skopje. Tomb of Alexander the Great is not in Amphipolis. Macedonian archaeologist Pasko Kuzman made the comment in connection with the information of Greek media a big tomb had been discovered in the region in question, the Macedonian online news edition Utrinski Vesnik writes.
According to Kuzman, it is obviously a big discovery but if the results have to be discussed, it should be noted Amphipolis is located in Macedonia.
Kuzman thinks it is clear Alexander the Great was buried in Egypt, in Alexandria, which a number of Roman rulers made a pilgrimage to, but the exact place is not yet known.
It is supposed there is a mosque at the very place now but it cannot be removed so that it is proved the tomb of Alexander the Great is there. The other hypothesis is that the tomb is in the modern Republic of Macedonia, in the southern part of the country.

Yes, but the tomb discovered lies in Amphipolis, and Amphipolis had only been incorporated in the Macedonian kingdom for like 30 years before Alexander's death. Why would anyone build a tomb for a Macedonian royal there instead of the capital or the supposed cradle of the Argeads?

    The Entrance of the tomb

Archaeologists have unearthed a 4.5-meter-wide road and 13 steps that lead to the tomb’s entrance, which is guarded by two carved sphinxes. Excavation work will continue until researchers enter the tomb. The discoveries within the tomb are of great importance as they are crucial for accurate dating.
A stone wall, constructed after the burial to protect the tomb, is going to be destroyed. All the pieces of the wall will be kept by the team of archaeologists.
A geophysical prospecting conducted in the monument has shown that there are three areas inside the tomb. Worst-case scenario would be the collapse of the roof which means that the tomb is filled with dirt. In that case, the area will be carefully cleaned in order to protect grave offerings.
When the archaeologists enter the burial space, they will identify if the tomb is robbed. In that scenario, there is a major risk that important discoveries have been removed.
If the tomb is intact, the researchers will be able to give accurate information on the identity of the dead, based on the bones, sex, skeleton’s height and grave goods.
Although the tomb is dated from the era of Alexander the Great, archaeologists claim that it is highly unlikely that the Greek king was buried at ancient Amphipolis. However, they believe that an important Macedonian official was buried there.

Actually the marbles are placed EXACTLY with the dominant ancient Greek way.
Every marble block was engraved and had two wholes. When marbles were one above or next the other then led in liquid form put in to those engraves creating metal connections with the blocks.
That same technic was used in Acropollis and in many Greek temples and few fortifications.

Not exactly but your questions are just...
Remember that Amphipolis -an Athenian colony that qonquered by Spartans and gain its autonomy right before Phillip II take under his control- was very important for Macedonians.
The narrow bay and the river made it a great naval base and trade crossroad.
Also it was one of the two cities that "guarded" the Macedonian Gold mines!
Amphipolis was perfect for Macedonians to start campaigns (the Celtic one before Alexander go to Asia for example).
What made the city "perfect" for such actions was the fact that the rest of the Greeks did not had to sence any kind of fear... The campaign starting point was too far away from them and any "odd" move would be early spoted.
Your questions are just because IF a King was about to be barried he would be barried in the Argeian Royal grave place Aegea!
What makes the things more strange is that the lion from the other hand signifies a King!! Remember that the Argeian dynasties (Argos, Athens, Macedonia) were suposed to be decentens of Hercules (Lion). That is why they were called Heracleides also!!!!!!!!!!
While eagle was only placed on temples of ZEUS the lion was the official mark of the Dynasty!
    History has too many surprices!!!

That's rather bad news but somehow expected But several archaeologists are quick to declare that it will probably be plundered by grave robbers, possibly during Roman times.

In about 20 days the archaeologists will reach the floor level and will know if the tomb has been looted.

According to Kathimerini, most believe they have been looted. This is also evidenced by the headless sphinxes with broken wings, which guards it.

What could have saved the grave? The probability of the roof collapsing before robbers entered. In this case, the work of archaeologists will be long and difficult, but we get untouched actual findings.

Moreover on Wednesday, August 13th, a small mosaic floor leading to the entrance was revealed and showed that the excavation reached its final critical line.

In fact, according to Vima's Sunday edition, the head of investigations, Peristeri, with a micro camera saw a short recess to the right of the image inside the tomb.

Again, according to the report, distinguished images of fixed roof appeared. She also spotted backfilling.

So, what took them 2 years to reach the floor level? Are they employing ants to carry away the dirt and sand?

No, probably in a warehouse somewhere in Nevada. Next to the Arc of the Covenant, the Crystal Skull and the body of Alexander.

Neos, are you digging there or something. You seem to have a strange amount of access to pictures and stuff.

    I 'd wish

I have huge interest in Macedonian archaeology because it is the most recent addition in ancient Greek archaelogy and everything that it is discovered casts more light to the whole of 4th cent Greece.
I am also in real adiscipation for the opening of the tomb and what it will come out of it, although it is more than possible that the tomb has been already raided in the past, therefore I check the news often.

I have been in Amphipolis some years ago but never thought that one of the hills there was actually a tomb.
