Default Coolest/funniest thing to ever happen to you in medieval 2?

For me it's the time I managed to capture the pope, that'll show him for excommunicating me . Seriously, being able to defeat and capture what is supposed to be the most powerful man in the game is really fun. Also I once captured a single peasant in battle. For some reason I just let him go, must have been his watery eyes . I'll post when other things come to mind, but what are your cool or fun experiences in the game?

While out setting up watchtowers with my faction heir in SS (playing as Norway), I get attacked by a rebel army of 300+ men. I try withdrawing, but they attack again and I have to take to the field. Even it being a bodyguard unit, they're not immortal (unless they're Byzantines), so I wasn't feeling all that confident of victory. I hit their heaviest unit formation first to try and take out the one unit that had a bonus vs cavalry, and promptly lost half my guards. Even so, I managed to eventually whittle the army down to nothing and finally claimed victory with my general and three bodyguards remaining.

That was pretty much an introduction to his career, which would eventually have him conquering Lithuania and Novgorod...well, not all of Novgorod, seeing as how he unfortunately died a few turns before I took their last region.

In call of Warhammer, playing as Hochland, I sent an army to a crusade against Khorne's Keep of Skull in the north. It was the second crusade called IIRC.
My army was my heir (a really good commander btw), 5 marksmen, 3 empire halberdiers and 3 empire swordsmen.
Marching to the north, I got past several allied crusading armies and even helped my Kislev allies take down some rebels. The thing is I was at the vanguard, and my plan was to secure the way to conquering armies to come after me. Obviously I wouldn't make it to the north.
Near the Chaos Dwarves I saw a full stack standing near the mountains. A well balanced army: 1 unit of Chaos Trolls, some units of Hobgoblins, some Black Orcs, 1 unit of Blunderbuss, 1 unit of Dark Dwarf warriors, 1 Hellcannon, some Sneaky Gits.
They attacked my army the next turn and I retreated. My army ended in the bottom of a nearby icy mountain. They attacked me again.

Entering the battlefield, I looked for the most defensible position. I found a nice plateau by the edge of my side of the map with only three ways up. I scattered my marksmen around so all them could shoot at the same time without hitting each other. My halberdiers guarded the higher passage (which I fought would be harder to defend), my swordsmen guarded the middle passage and I left my general in reserve, able to charge down anyone coming by the low passage.

So, the battle commence. There are two ways for the Dark Dwarves: a steep curve leading to a plateau lower than mine or a flat plain leading to the most steep way up directly to my plateau. They sent almost everyone the first and two Hobgoblin wolf riders the latter.

The Chaos Troll arrived first because they are way faster than anybody else. Some salvos from my marksmen and they were all dead before reaching my infantry lines.
Then my marksmen started shooting the approaching wolf riders down the valley. After killing most, I set them to attack the bulk of the army showing up the lower plateau and I send down my general to kill the remaining wolf riders through the lower passage so they wouldn't cross the line of fire of my riflemen. Some few charges and they rout.
My marksmen start killing the enemy archers and the common Orcs in the lower plateau. They too rout before contact, though I sustain some casualties from arrow fire. So I send my general up the lower plateau on the enemy rearguard to kill the routing troops.
The thing is marksmen have really long range and they simple continued mowing down the enemy before they could even get near my troops.
After destroying the bulk of the enemy army, I reposition my marksmen in a lower area so they can kill the Blunderbuss, the remaining Black Orcs and the Sneaky Gits. After killing them all, I have still not won the battle.

The lone Hellcannon is moving up the hills. Too slow to keep up with the rest of the army, they are the last unit.

I really liked the battle because how a seemingly inferior army can easily defeat an over confident enemy.

The army moved on to the wastes, just to be attacked by two Khorne armies. My heir was the last unit alive, and his escape from the north was quite epic too, finally reuniting with Eric and his Ragnar Wolves in Zoishenk.

Thrid Age: Total War i had a little accident happen to me. Playing as Isengard i attacked a Rohirrim castle (I think it was Foldburg) and destroyed the wall with balistas. I charged my army in (massive numerical advantage on my part) but forgot to turn off auto_fire for the balistas, who were heppily shooting into the melee. Well, I was lucky, my faction leader (Saruman) was cornered by 2 units of eorling swordsmen and the enemy general. My bodyguard was down to 10 or so men with Saruman standing, when the balista shot killed the enemy general. 1 second later ~200 swordsmen and 20 remaining bodyguards turned and ran

Sometimes I do. I kinda like having the movie characters (good or evil) on the battle field. And Saruman was leading my elite army, while the other generals only get weaker units to make for a harder game.

Oh and Btw: If stupidity on my part counts, I've lost 4 full stack armies of gold chevron spanish units to pirates, while preparing my push to the americas. One ship-one army, guess what happened... It was funny, because it greatly improved that game for me, going from easy (Spain and Africa in my possession) to very difficult, since France and Milan as well as England managed to take northern Spain. I am a vry slow expander.

Probably (most likely) not, but I prefer to use my faction leaders in battles.

Playing as the Turks, managed to form a nice little empire. I'm at war with Byzantium and Egypt.

Then the Mongols arrive. No biggie, I've got ballista towers and halbediers. Then the Pope declare a crusade on Jerusalem. Which is mine.

In short order, I'm at war with everyone except the Moors and its only eighty turns or so into the game.

I stare blankly at the screen for a couple of minutes and then get myself some pizza and mountain dew. I could already tell it was gonna be a loooong campaign.

What I find weird, is that when defending a gate, you have a big advantage when you can keep fighting them there. Even when you are heavily outnumbered. I've had lots of heroic victories that way. So yeah I rather have them smashing down my gate then climbing up the walls .

Also, it's fun when the enemy invades you out of nowhere and you manage to repel them and afterwards counterattack them and driving their weakened army back to their capital, eventually destroying it. Or you can bypass all that and sneak behind them with an army and attack their (hopefully) lightly defended homeland.

I don't have any really fun stories, but once I was moving a group of Italian spear militia through the alps. France, which had been at peace, attacked them. The French force had a variety of things -- some spear militia, but also some dismounted feudal knights, cavalry, I think some crossbowmen -- and outnumbered my force. I withdrew, ending up further up the alps, and the French pursued. I was atop a high hill, and managed to cause a massive chain rout with a downhill charge and defeat the French even though I was charging DFKs with ISMs and such.

That's actually a smart move from a gamer's perspective. It improves your reputation a bit (as much as releasing any number of enemy troops under 80), while essentially doing nothing to help your enemy. The ransom would have been almost nothing, and your general doesn't risk losing dread from releasing such a small number, nor would he gain dread from executing him.

Meh that still wouldn't balance out the numerous other times I did execute the prisoners in that campaign. That reminds me, I once had an epic battle against the English near Bruges. I nearly captured all of their troops (I think), which was probably of 1000. As usual I hover over the release and execute buttons to hear their pleas for mercy or their happiness when they think they'll be spared and I kill them anyways (yes I am a sick individual ). So while I was hovering over the release button my hand slipped and I accidentally pressed it! Crap! Now I had to fight nearly a full stack again! They still got killed in the following turns though.

I'm not saying that releasing is always the best choice -- just that if you have one peasant as a captive, the net benefits of release likely outweigh the net benefits of either of the other two options. I had a more detailed description of my thoughts in another thread.

Of course, that is true. It's just that in my campaign at the time it probably didn't make much difference. I don't really care about reputation and such anyways, I just pick an option based on roleplay. Example: can't play as an evil dictator and just release all your prisoners just to have a better stance in diplomacy. Of course you could, but I wouldn't do it because of the roleplay choice.

Well, once my units were in melee combat with the enemy units and I was zoomed in checking everything out when suddenly.....BOOM !! "your men have slayed the enemy general !!" and of course the screen flashed to the kill scene but I had not been in close combat for more than a few seconds so I said NO WAY until I realized that one of the enemy catapult flaming rounds went right into the fray of the enemy general unit and my units, thus causing the enemy to instantly kill their own general !! .it was really epic !!! I posted this in another thread but it seems to be dead so thought I would share here !!!

Not the coolest per-say but my saddest/heroic moment in Med2 (vanilla) was while playing as France. I had conquered all of the Holy Land regions predominantly with 1 general and his 2 sons, the general was a 10 star commander, a paragon of chivalry, a bastion of loyalty and revered as a saint.

Unfortunatley the Mongols come along and after a few turns of being able to buy them off (giving me time to fortify Antioch, where my general and 1 son were stationed) Antioch was besieged by 3 armies. The garrison manages to defeat all 3 armies and scatter them but the next turn the city is besieged by another 3 armies, I manage to defeat 2 of them but the 3rd overwhelmed the garrison and the father and son died fighting in the city square side by side.

While this was happening the other son had been marshaling an army elsewhere and then drove back the entire mongol horde avenging his father and brother over the next few years.
