    Battle difficulty : normal.
    Campaign difficulty : hard.

Battles will be balanced stats wise, and the AI will be a challenge on the campaign map.

And if you look for a real challenge then go for VH in your campaign. That will mean Total War with a much lower income

Yes, contrary to vanilla, very hard actually means very hard especially early game.

@Nikuta, this also depends on what faction you are playing and how challenging you want the campaign to be.

I think the mod is best balanced for hard campaign map and normal battles.

I've played vh/vh before for the challenge, but it kind of saps quite a lot of elements out of the game since diplomacy just doesn't work. no diplomacy = no trade. no trade = no special resources. no special resources = no cool buildings. no cool buildings = no uber units.

As many have said, the battles are made to be on Normal. This is because we have drastically altered unit stats and there are hardcoded AI buffs on the higher difficulties. This leads to very bad balancing.

Hard on the Campaign will probably be a challenge for most people. VH and Legendary is meant to be a hard step up each time.

Very hard campaing hard battle is enought and good if u wanna have fun and have some challange.

On normal u just smash all nations like kids... i can count on one hand how many good and hard battles i was have on normal lvl in 300 turns.
Good game is not easy... u need to feel when u fighting against other nation and take them their lands and cities.

I'd recommend Very hard (Campaign) / Normal (Battles). It has been the best balance for me, and battles are still challenging since the AI has more armies (due to more money from VH-campaign).

    This works well for me
    Battle difficulty : normal.
    Campaign difficulty : hard.

Everything works relatively well in battle and challenging enough on normal (things are becoming unrealistic with hard battle diff.)
As for the campain map, beginning can be challenging sometimes (depends on a faction), but it gets easier as time goes by. I might try very hard next time

Yeah, i hate unfair battles. Great that in this mod, normal means fair. at least for battle diff. on campaign i will go for hard when i play getae (they are hard even on normal) but when i play massagetae when 1.1 releases i go for very hard. i dont need that much money anyways... late game is quite boring when you get alot of money and you dont have to make economy more effective, like when you have % bonus for industry, building industry buildings mainly in that province, or upgrading your cities to lv3 economic, so you gain a massive income in that province. There is one point in game where you step off the early game diff. to late game diff. thats the point where it gets boring really fast..

I play vh/vh, for campaign map I think very hard is perfect as for battles I think it might be too much for the average player.

Was this mod also made with ultra unit sizes in mind? Or does it not really matter?

I can't speak for the developers, but I will say playing on ultra, I haven't noticed any problems due to balancing with unit sizes.

I think Normal is the best. With Normal, everything is properly balanced as the mod intends.

I'm used to play on VH/VH since the game has released. Few days back I read recommendations about playing battles on Normal, and I changed the difficulty. There is a shocking difference and my game has become a lot more easier. So, now I'm playing on VH again, I like strong AI even it's not fair and I have no problems with losing battles or taking much more casulities.

I really like legendary difficulty in the battle map, i dont think i have lost a single battle on hard and normal (well balanced battles that is, i would ofc loose with one unit against twenty...). The downside is that the campaign map can take alot of time since any mistakes you (you can ctr+alt+del and close the program b4 it autosaves sometimes to avoid catastrophy) make you have to live with.

VH is a good campaign difficulty for a veteran player. It is not as stupidly hard as it was a month or two ago -- you can now actually get trade agreements and factions on the other side of the world seem less likely to randomly declare war on you. Battle difficulty matters less as it is easily adjusted throughout the campaign (I found normal too easy as Rome, for example, so I upped it to hard which feels about right).
