Medieval 2 Total War game crashes midway through battle.

Its medieval 2 total war gold edition and while i am in battle, custon or real time. The game just crashes with the classic title "Medieval 2 Total war has encountered an unspecified error and needs to close" this happens on all the games vanilla,americas,etc. Any help would be appreciated.
I have Microsoft windows XP Sp 3 but i think it has to do with the game not the CPU

Underpowered computers can do it especially a chance of running out of memory.
Heat can do it as some with laptops learned the hard way.

Attach you dxdiag to your next post for a look. I would like to discount the above first.

Thank you very much for responding I am attempting reinstalling the game, probably fruitless but just giving it a go. I will post an update when it is finished.
I am not familiar with the dxdiag if you can explain it I would appreciative.

Update:I ran the game again, and the problem has been alleviated :/ so reinstalling worked

Reinstall can help at times. The problem comes back, come on back and I'll explain how to post the dxdiag.
