Default How similar are the Factions?

Are there big differences between the Factions or is it comparable to Shogun 2? I do not know much about Chinese history

well its basically a civil war within a country so ethnically it is pretty close to the difference of the north and south in US civil war, and the factions are not really different countries but "Houses" revolving around a "royal" or ruling family, so yeah i would compare the factious for ROTK to the clans of Shogun 2 but there are not really any big differences except for the top left faction (ma teng) which is more like mongols and mongolia and that region and the bottom left which is more jungle like vietnam (hou meng) each has their own little differences with the central factions being pretty close to eachother

this is all based on my opinion and is not the view of this mod or its modding staff lol (disclaimer )

Meng Huo is the Nanman leader (in Han view, they were southern "barbarians"), which come to conflict against Shu Han because they were not sure who was the actual Emperor and so decided to sever ties with Shu.

Meanwhile, Mateng controlled the Liang province which was at the time at the border of China proper. His units include local Qiang tribesmen (one of the prominent non-Han people around China), so that's why it looks different to others.

Well I just want to correct something here. Meng Huo was a Burmese leader I would assume. Ancient Vietnam was a district of the Han empire back then. At the time of the Three Kingdoms Vietnam was under the control of Sun clan; in fact in Vietnamese history there was a rebellion of the Vietnamese which finally subdued by the grandson of Lu Xun.

Shu never controlled the Nanman tribes, mostly just to prevent upstart after Yong Kai and several tribe leaders that try to form their own independence. which would result in another upstart force attacking the Shu border/raiding and since its close to the capital as well. Zhuge liang did historically install various tribe leader who surrendered to Shu as province governor but Nanman still remain as its own independence State from Shu. Its better to be surrounded in a corner looking outward against enemies at a 75 degree angle rather then all sides which would make sense since Zhuge Liang plans long Campaign toward the northern part of china and it would take a long time to relieve the capital in any case of siege.

As has been said, the Nanman were Burmese/Thai/Laotian peoples active in southwest China, particularly in modern Yunnan, that have direct ties to the modern Miao/Hmong people. I would not consider them the same as the ancient Vietnamese as there isn't any evidence that the two shared any commonalities in language, religion, government, or culture. In that regard, the Nanman and ancient Vietnamese should be considered as two distinct groups.

The ancient Vietnamese can be traced back to the kingdom of Nanyue, which was destroyed by the Han in 111 BCE. In Vietnam, the rulers of Nanyue are referred to as the Triệu Dynasty. The name "Vietnam" is derived from Nam Việt, the Vietnamese pronunciation of Nanyue. Shi Xie, a warlord of the Three Kingdoms era, ruled over much of the former Nanyue lands in southern China and Vietnam. As one of the officials who ruled northern Vietnam in the 1st century, he was posthumously titled Thiên Cảm Gia Ứng Linh Vũ Đại Vương (善感嘉應靈武大王) by a Trần Dynasty emperor, as recorded in the Đại Việt sử ký toàn thư (大越史記全書), and History of King Si (Kỳ Sĩ Vương). Shi Xie is still honoured in some temples today as "King Si" (Sĩ Vương).
