    Icon5 Weird Phalanx Behaviour

I am not sure if this was posted before but I encountered a very weird phalanx behaviour when fighting epirus with spartans.

::1:: I send my hoplites to attack the enemy forces but the enemy general quickely sends some phalanx unit against me.

::2:: Here the first weird thing happends, the single units splits up and acts like two units now that are threatening my unit's flank (the gap between both parts really existed)

::3:: To react on that weird behaviour I send a second hoplite unit to attack the rear of second part of their phalanx

::4:: Another weird thing happends, absolutly independent from the first part of the phalanx, the second part turns around to dynamically faces my hoplites. I now fight two independent phalanx units which have been originally one...as if phalanx was not tough enough already

I wonder if this is a vanilla behaviour?!

I have seen something similiar to that only that it was roman legionaries fighting a phalanx. My legionaries also split up and started attacking the rear side of the phalanx.

How was the terrain? Sometimes units split around "impassable terrain", even though to our eyes it looks perfectly passable.

It was all flat city battle but in a small town and actually next to the buildings so no real reason to split up like that

CA made a change in patch 14 that I think is affecting this behavior. I think it is the same change that ruined our unique formations (gave us the charge bug). Here is the text from the CA patch notes:

-Improved the combat behaviour of flanking enemies while attacking in formation, so the units are more concerned with attacking the flank of the enemy unit, rather than drifting to the front of the enemy, and potentially nullifying the flanking attack.

    and

-When a unit under Battle AI control is changing formation, due to being attacked on multiple fronts, it will now take more consideration of its facing, to avoid presenting the enemies its back or flanks.

I think that and some of the other changes have made the battle AI do some strange things in formations

hmm, i actually like the idea of roman legionairies acting independently, but a phalanx (pike i assume) wouldn´t be to realistic...

Whatever CA did, DEI was working better before they changed things again, seems to be quite common here.
Shogun 2, no thanks I will stick with Kingdoms SS.
