Generic Total War -- Mod Idea
Swordsmen, Spearmen, Archers, Cavalry, siege weapons.
Simplified to the bare basics, that's basically all the units in this mod. All factions share the same, or near the same units. Think of vanilla chain-mail units, e.g. armoured sergeants, highland nobles and noble archers and scots pike militia, mail and feudal knights, crossbowmen, longbowmen, etc. The only distinction between factions is color. No (visible) armour or weapon upgrades necessary.
Some factions could have better unit types than others, but still share most of the same units. So maybe some factions have "cavalry culture," and so they could build one higher tier of stables, resulting in a higher tier of horsemen than other factions with infantry, spearmen, archer, siege, or naval culture. But even though they specialize in a certain unit type, doesn't necessarily mean they lack in another, still being able to recruit most all the other types, except the elite types that don't match with their culture.
With 30 factions in a temperate-European type map (no deserts or eastern factions so that the generic armor doesn't match), this would be a blast for me. Or even just 20 or less factions I'd still have fun with it. I think I'd have great fun with a siege-weapon focused faction.
I can imagine mods are a big undertaking, but I also think this wouldn't be the most difficult to undertake. Just an idea.
