Default Additional issues resulting from steam update

    Dear community,

Don't let my new-ness fool you, I've been a Total War (and SS) fan for years.

Now, I read through this thread and noticed that none of the issues, apart from launching SS, are being addressed. There may be an "easy fix" regarding launching the mod, but there are more serious issues that make the mod unplayable beyond launching it. As such, I feel this warrants a new thread, as I will not propose that there is an "easy fix".

I'd like for people to start posting the issues they come across, as well as a way in which these issues can be reproduced. This would enable the mod developers to more easily reproduce the issues themselves, and hopefully find a solution.

    1) As far as launching is concerned, I reinstalled the entire game (and wiped all the remnants of the previous install), and did the whole .exe renaming thing, as proposed in the linked thread. Despite of (or maybe because of) having the mod installed in its own folder (instead of overwriting one of the kingdoms campaigns), it didn't work for me. Eventually I managed to get it running through adding a custom shortcut to the medieval2.exe in steam, and editing the "target", as shown below:

The target command is as follows:
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Medieval II Total War\medieval2.exe" @mods\SS6.3\default.cfg

The default.cfg refers to the config file of the SS launcher, so this way one can still use the additional launcher options:

    2) Now on to the issues, I've identified two in only 10 minutes of playing. Firstly, and I've seen this mentioned before, there is a sound issue. As some people have mentioned, there is a problem with the sounds played when one returns to the previous menu panel in the main menu. I did not experience this, as for me the custom mod sounds worked perfectly fine. However, the sound issue is not just in relation to the main menu, but to the actual gameplay (battlefield) sounds as well. When on the battlefield (a random custom battle as HRE, using the config above), the player would select a unit, and usually a distinct sound would be played as feedback of your selection. This sound effect doesn't work anymore. Additionally, sound effects for various units don't work, particularly with cannons. Basilisk, Serpentine, Cannon, and Bombard don't play sounds when firing (for some reason the Grand Bombard did), while the impact sounds do work fine. The trebuchets and mangonels are also mute. I haven't tested this extensively, I hope others will be able to test further and compile some complete overview of what sounds don't work.

    3) The resources on the strategy map. Config as above, didn't change any other files. Late campaign as HRE, M/M difficulty, Savage AI, no BGR, with perm arrows and perm watchtowers. The pictures will explain everything. Also, I read somewhere that someone was able to train a war dog unit in SS, perhaps this is the reason why. I haven't had the time to play further, but I did fully upgrade both Groningen and Antwerp to highest level with all buildings (process_cq, add_money, and add_population). No new units such as camels or war dogs appeared, but it could also be a time issue (perhaps they will be unlocked later, I had no time to change the time scale of the campaign to test).

Thank you for your attention, and please contribute if there are any other issues. I'm hoping the developers can have a look and fix these things, for which I'd be extremely grateful (and probably the entire community with me).

    Two more issues:

    1) The UI tooltips for the three buttons allowing control over AI reinforcements should be fixed:

    2) There is a strange shadow on some of the buildings. I haven't seen this before:

Finally, I'm starting to wonder to what extent these issues are mod-related, versus affecting the entire vanilla game. If I had more time I would test for this more extensively.

are you sure of this? i find hard to believe the AI swapper script will run without actually using the SS_launcher.exe, same for randomized main menu music.
checking the music thing is easy...if the music is always the same each time you launch the mod then its not working and most likely neither AI swapper.

I'm not on my desktop now, but I do distinctly remember getting an advisor popup about the G5 AI swapper. That alone, as far as I know, is reason enough to assume that it's working, unless there's something else in the Mod, apart from the launcher, that this could come from.

I was only able to get it to a usable state through the method outlined previously. You might be interested in trying that for yourself.

Nope, sadly I am still having the same issue.

Try this with a clean install of MTW2 and SS 6.4 (This won't work for SS 6.3)

Okay so here is the fix, for those with stainless steel.

#1 Go to your default medieval 2 folder,

    #2 Copy "Medieval2" https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...2008.48.56.png

#3 Paste it in the same folder and rename the copy to "Kingdoms" https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...2008.49.44.png

#4 Go to your SS folder and run SS Launcher as admin. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...2008.55.23.png

#5 Enjoy, border-less mode + steam support now.

I also posted in the other thread with this issue, but maybe someone here will be able to help.

After copying "medieval2.exe" and renaming it to "kingdoms.exe" in my game folder I have been able to successfully launch Stainless Steel with no apparent issues in the menus or starting campaigns, HOWEVER, whenever I try to enter any battle on the battle map, Medieval2 crashes with the error message "Medieval 2 had encountered an unspecified error and will now exit."

I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate, and have an AMD Phonom II X4 945 processor and EVGA Nvidia GT 640 GPU.

The launcher is, as far as I can tell, purely cosmetic, catering to the less technology-savvy community members among us. Plainly speaking, the launcher only changes the config file, which is then used when running the game. Circumventing the launcher while loading the config should have the exact same result.

PS: couldn't find an edit button, perhaps related to my number of posts?

G5 nor gracul are around to give the details, but the SS_Launcher.exe is something more than just a batch file converted into executable.

RBAI swapper for TAWT operates through a VB script file which is launched along the game with a batch file, since for SS there is no VB script anywhere in the mod folder It is very likely that this VBscript has been embedded within SS_launcher...same for the main menu music randomiser which is probably another embedded script.

Not mentioning that it has another script capable of detecting if steam is installed in your machine, and apparently changes some parameter inside if you accept the prompted message when steam is detected.

    +1

Melooo is right on the money, if you DON'T launch SS from the exe. launcher you will miss out on several important features, that I can think of right off hand. Not to mention its more buggy and prone to crashing if you try to play it without the launcher...

I stand corrected, the randomized menu music did not work without the launcher. After some more tinkering the launcher suddenly worked, even though I had done the exact same things during my initial try, and now I am getting the randomized music.

So apparently the launcher does have its purposes apart from the default.cfg, although I wonder if the AI swapper was influenced in any way as, as I already stated, I did get a message that it got activated using my initial method.

Apart from this, are there no more update-specific bugs to report? I haven't come across anything unusual apart from the 4 I already mentioned. Meloo and vin, you must be getting these bugs too right?

I appear to be having an entirely different issue, when trying to send a private message in a hotseat campaign i cannot. The top of the window says "STRAT.TXT (SMT_HOTSEAT_MESSAGE_TITLE)" and the send button at the bottom is blanked out.

I have not noticed any additional issues yet but we are not trading turns very quickly on this campaign and the game has just started (a few turns in) so have not the chance to check things out....

fortunately i still have my prepatch m2 safe away from steam updates, so im not suffering any of these issues.

IMO the most sensible thing Valve and CA should do is rollback this "patch" and offer it as BETA so people can voluntarily participate as testers until they get everything right and release it. Right now they are treating everyone who owns Steam M2 as their unpaid beta testers...

Lucky bastard.. Yeah that's probably a wise decision, and it's probably sound policy for the mod developers to wait for another official update that will fix all the vanilla bugs that have been introduced, before fixing the mod. Nevertheless, I do believe the resource issue on the strat map is mod-specific, haven't seen any issues on vanilla strat map. The sound issues on the other hand are definitely vanilla bugs. Haven't been able to test extensively.

Ah hadnt seen that, hmmm well usually that text is defined in SS6.3\data\text\start.txt and SS6.3\data\text\tooltips.txt
unless the update changed that, this should be fixed by running the SS_setup.exe with default options
