    Default 7/22/14 Steam RTW update?

    Is RSII still compatible now?

No idea. Seeing as there haven't been any updates to RTW/BI/Alex in several years, I'm not sure what updating could have occurred.

This is more of a steam update than a RTW update.
As already said the last RTW patch was many years ago...

Thanks for all the replies guys.

And no, I don't believe so. The update screws with a standing RSII install, but if you REinstall, your modded game will run just fine.

This is hard to track since I don't have a Steam version of RTW1, but there are scattered reports of RTW1 players having issues after the Steam update to migrate away from Gamespy to Steam MP. See that link which I'll try to update that demonstrates weird things happening in the vanilla RTW1 and some reports of RS players having trouble too.

    http://steamcommunity.com/app/4760/d...6747678855013/

Since there's lots of RS players and some are Steam players, then it would be helpful if RS players could note if they're having trouble, what OS system they're using, which Steam Build, and which mods. See the formation bug that happens when trying to do sieges, for example. I'd expect to find more bugs in the next 48 hours. Steam/CA is working on a new patch.

IN MTW2, it's not uncommon for custom battles with multiple armies, but that's something I never tried in RTW1. There are reports of mods having reinforcement army issues plus way more lag, not something I ever noticed in RTW1, but with RS maybe sometimes these are issues? I don't know, but it's also something RS players could watch for.

    http://forums.totalwar.com/showthrea...tch-breaks-AI?

There are reports of very strange Battle AI (BAI) behaviour after the Steam patch, so again, if you're noticing these thing, then document them, make official complaints, and let's see if we can get a new patch.

I haven't heard of this happening yet in the Steam version of RTW1, but experience level bonuses to the attack and defense are NOT working in MTW2, only the defense boost, so please watch for that in RTW1 within the RS mod.

All of these seem to be complex issues in the vanilla RTW1 Steam patch and then filters down and appear in the mods in some cases.

There are numerous sound effects and music issues in MTW2 now with the Steam patch, and that might also turn up in RTW1. Listen when you fire ranged weapons especially as many have reported the sound FX being off (the wrong sound playing or no sound FX at all).

A comprehensive list of Steam patch issues occuring in RTW1. Look for them in RS. I'd expect that it's practically broken now with a suicidal AI just standing around taking archer fire, completely incompetent and unable to do anything, and doing bizarre things when defending like sallying with the entire defensive army, or scurrying around inside like rats.
    http://forums.totalwar.com/showthrea...r-made-worse.?

There are several RS players reporting numerous issues elsewhere. All of which was working fine 72 hours ago.

I have been unable to get RSII working after having to reinstall because of corrupted files. The game just crashes at 5% when trying to load a game or start a new one.

Same here. RS2 crashes while loading a new campaign. Using windows 7, RTW 1.5 just patched by Steam for the multiplayer updates.

The cynical part of me might well suggest that it's entirely deliberate.....

Can't have better experiences playing Mods on original RTW when there's actual money to be made on Rome2.................

Best decision an RTW-Mod player can make - buy the discs before they too disappear.

Doing it on purpose? Come on, let's not be on the complotist side...

Do you remember when you RTW modders asked for the change of hardcoded limits, and some CA dev replied that they couldn't also because "they lost the source code"?
    Maybe they were not lying...
In order to make the MP changes they have to re-build the exe; apparently, in order to do so, they are using an old source code found by luck, which is updated in some parts but old in some others (like siege AI). This is only an assumption, but it explains how the hell a MP patch could cause all these SP problems (bugs they are trying to fix, but who knows how many others are still to be discovered and will be left unfixed).
So, in a nutshell: avoid the Steam version if you own the disk one.
Disclaimer: the post above is way way prealpha, the final version will be way better than this.

Again we are of one mind, because that unfortunate thought occurred to me as well....though perhaps a fleeting one, given my past experiences with CA's veracity.

Odd, since your post includes a rather strange contradiction? If they 'were' telling the truth that they lost the source code, how in the 'H' could they attempt to patch a game through steam without having it? That makes no sense. Besides, from what I've been able to see\read of this, it doesn't seem that anyone is taking responsibility for this action, or truly aware who exactly did it. It is irresponsible for anyone to do this kind of thing without testing it first anyway...but then CA has a great history of that for sure.

I would suggest that for those having issues with an RS2 install...remove it and re-install, and then prevent STEAM from messing with it. Or, get the original CD's and forget STEAM. At least until someone 'fesses up' and fixes this.

It has also been suggested that ALEX.exe still works (just quoting one user), and, that replacing the exe's with the originals from the CD's will fix the problem. May be worth a try if you have them.

Maybe, at that time, they didn't know where the code was and they simply say "we lost it". Now that they need it for patching the game (Gamespy has been shut down) and implement MP through Steam server they searched through their old repositories and found this current code that may present "some faults" and they are trying to fix them. I don't know, as i said this is only an assumption for explaining how the "H" a MP patch could break SP; what is sure it's their incompetent behavior (the first version they released with the new MP contained serious and clear problems that a quick beta testing would have found in no time).
ALEX may work because it has not been touched by the MP update; it's still the old one that uses Gamespy (now dead) for MP.

I'm having the same CTD problem when starting a new campaign. My OS is win8, and the game shows it's been patched to 1.51.

So, is it this update that is causing the problem? Man, this happens too often, that is, a really little update deprives us of a really wonderful experience like in this case.

I had the same problem with not being able to start a campaign or load one up. Re-installing was no help (tried plenty of times, any which way I could think of). In the end I had to buy a non-steam digital copy, and now everything is working fine for me again (I was even able to get a copy on sale for $2.50).

It's pretty lame that they totally screwed the single player aspect of their game (AI problems, siege bugs, mod compatibility issues, etc.), which has to be the prime reason why people are still playing and buying these old games, in order to accommodate the multiplayer minority. I don't want to see multiplayer disappear, but keeping it alive at the expense of the main aspect of the game is just bad business.
