I have not tested this yet but it seems that you don't need to have the kingdoms expansion anymore to play kingdoms mods.

Also I have confirmed if you make a copy of medieval2.exe and renamed it to kingdoms.exe that mods will run fine on this new kingdoms.exe

    Excellent!
however distributing this renamed copy of the executable with mods wouldn't be legal right? if so then we could distribute a batch that does the copying and renaming labelled as "Steam mod fixer" or whatever.

I don't believe we could release this "new" executable without drawing someone's wrath but we just told them how and the results. Let it fly this way.

Okay so here is the fix, for those with stainless steel.

#1 Go to your default medieval 2 folder,

    #2 Copy "Medieval2" https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...2008.48.56.png

#3 Paste it in the same folder and rename the copy to "Kingdoms" https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...2008.49.44.png

#4 Go to your SS folder and run SS Launcher as admin. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...2008.55.23.png

#5 Enjoy, border-less mode + steam support now.

Can anyone confirm if this method works with other mods? Call of warhammer, third age, divide and conquer.... etc...

It works with ruschi cause that's what i tested it on

I would suggest trying it yourself or going to each mod's separate forums.

EDIT: Steam just downloaded another update for me...

Tried this. Get the load screen then it crashes. Same with The Long Road mod.

Yes, my fix will only work with stainless steel, not sure how other mods are launched sadly.

If thats the case then your version of SS is corrupted, try a fresh install of MW2 and SS.

To use, just drop the SteamModFixer.bat into Medieval2's main folder and double-click and done you should be able to run mods as before

The long road still uses medieval2.exe. Just checked.

It seems some mods don't work without a lot of tweaking, for instance I just did a test where I only modified the EDU, mod foldered it properly and the mod would crash. Then I copied the data folder from vanilla to the mod (except for the EDU) and the mod ran. Then I deleted everything except the files I originally had in the mod folder and it worked.

This is weird cause at first I couldn't get the mod to run, then I got the mod to run perfectly with the exact same files!!!! I think it must be something to do with the registry or computer memory, or something way over my head. Just be prepared to do some tweaking before getting a mod to run.

So I've edited the TATW bat file to be medieval2.exe but launcing regular M2TW still doesnt result in TATW

I saved one mod folder elsewhere to my hard drive to see if it's possible to do that and then reintegrate it with the Steam MTW2's folders to see if that is a way around that allows save games to work. Then I dumped MTW2 and starting over from scratch to see if this takes care of the sound issues. When does the sound get messed up? Right away or during battles?

Anyway then I'll try both the old mods and do reinstallation of mods and see how the launcher editor can still be used. Actually Squid's tool allows you to specify the GameExe so it might merely be a matter of always selecting the medieval.exe one instead.

Note that Steam has a nasty habit of updating everyting: its client or the games you purchased and even wants you to install games through it that you didn't purchase through Steam. If you look behind the curtain, by selecting a game in your library, then properties, the Updates, there's a dropdown menu for "automatic updates". Personally I found this resulted in odd errors for modders, so I really don't want Steam updating MTW2 randomly. That's actually what prompted the "patch".

Likewise, Steam's client has properties too. Click on Steam, then Settings, the Downloads, and you'll see "download restrictions" for autoupdating and for downloads during game play. Frankly between downloading during a round of MTW2 and particularly if you've got autosave turned on, I'm certain that causes CTDs to occur. Why would you ever have downloading turned on automatically or do this during game play? It's just asking for a problem to happen.

The best way to play ordinary games of MTW2 is to turn off your wireless or cable modem Internet connection so Steam doesn't fiddle with anything. Of course this isn't an option for multiplayers. The wireless being on and the client updating itself is all producing hard drive changes plus heat, so simply not ideal for laptop owners who are concerned about game lag from all of that nonsense.

No matter what, you should be able to do the old brute force Regedit method to make this work (see my posts above with embedded helpful links), unless Steam screwed us on that as well.

EDIT: It's not just a matter of the bat files using the correct GameExe, but also the registry using the correct GameExe. The registry is a normally hidden program that organizes your files and tells them which exes open files. Many installers do the regedits for you, or you configured them with Squid's tool, or you renamed folders. Regardless, the registry entries probably are looking for the kingdoms.exe which no longer exists post-patch.

That's why I've been discussing using Regedit. In the interim, while we look for patch change normal screwups, we're trying to get savegame files and just regular unofficial mods to work. And this likely means learning what Regedit does...or not and waiting for solutions.

I thought steam would lock your game and therefore not let you play it through steam if you stopped the updates....I did EXACTLY what another poster said here and exited steam before the update could complete so I could save my files just in case...when I came back I could not click the game in menu, select properties to see what was going on.....Nothing.....totally locked and "update pending"......am I missing something here ??...thanks for your help in this thread along with irishron

Yeah. Did you use Squid's launcher editor or did you rename folders to try to install them? I've had zero problems with Squid's tool or even configuring the registry myself. Renaming folders is a guaranteed way to get a mod to install, but if you then install even more mods, you're likely to screw up mod installation by renaming them.

At one time, I had more then ten mods installed and working with no problems in the old Kingdoms launcher. That's why Squid's tool or Regedit is superior to renaming folders. It was literally unlimited mod foldering that way.

Gigantus often configures his mods to automatically look in the registry and do updates and makes it a seamless process. It's really based upon who configured the installation program. However all of that is now screwed up by there not being a Kingdoms.exe file.

Probably anyone using a mod for MTW2 and not Kingdoms is not experiencing problems with mods. Most mods are configured for Kingdoms.exe since there were things like boiling oil and additional tweeks in Kingdoms.

EDIT: I would guess that anyone using these mods:
    http://www.twcenter.net/forums/forum...-Modifications

...are working still? Anyone? That was the relevance of The Long Road discussion (see a few posts back) because it strictly uses the medieval.exe not the kingdoms.exe .

EDIT2: UGH! Maybe not. People are having trouble with the great but venerable DarthMod which solely uses the medieval.exe file. SEGA/STEAM what the Hell did you up?
