Chapter 9: Second Battle of the Titans Part I

Soon after the battle of Kassel, Buxhoewden sent a spy to the next target of the campaign. The Russians had already taken control of one member of the military alliance loyal to France, the Confederation of the Rhine, now two more were in their sights: Baden and Württemberg. Both had joined the Confederation of the Rhine in July of 1806 in support of Napoleon. With the Duchy of Cleves to the west in Prussian hands, Buxhoewden and Kutusov both saw the taking Baden and Württemberg would hamper the French’s war effort in Germany by cutting off the French’s supply lines to Austria. However, after the spy’s departure, Buxhoewden and Kutusov began butting heads over who was to be the leader of the campaign.

Buxhoewden argued that it was he because he was the first to be sent to the West. Kutusov dismissed his claims and argued that he was the better commander and thus better suited to lead the campaign. For two weeks the argument continued, until it was finally decided that the decision would have to be resolved by Vyazmitinov. While waiting for Vyazmitinov’s decision, Kutusov decided to move his army south near the border of Baden. Its elector was quite alarmed but he was assured that the French would come to his aid.

By late October, the spy, Igor Kondratiuk, finished his mission and began his journey back to Kassel. However, upon learning that Kutusov’s army was camped close to Baden’s border, Kondratiuk, rushed to Kutusov’s headquarters. According to Kondratiuk’s report, Napoleon himself was at the head of an army garrisoned at Stuttgart, capital of Wurttemberg, numbering 16,500 men and was preparing to march to Kassel before winter set in. Kutusov, relishing the chance at another battle with Napoleon, had Kondratiuk return to Buxhoewden with a message saying that he was going to take the city of Stuttgart. Upon receiving the message, Buxhoewden was furious. “Kutusov is only concerned with his own glory,” he later wrote, “and will jeopardize this whole campaign to achieve it.”

On Novemeber 10, Kutusov and the 3rd Army numbering 17,000 men arrived at Stuttgart and put the city to siege. The 3rd army was now composed of the 5th, 6th, 19th, 20th, 21th, 22th, 23th, 24th, 25th, 26th, 27th and 28th Regiment of Foot, the 6th Jagers, 4th, 5th and 6th Imperial Cavalry and the 4th, 5th and 6th 8-lber Artillery. The army camped that night on the outskirts of the city. Kutusov that night wrote: “Tomorrow, we will have a battle of epic proportions ahead of us. I’m confident the men will perform as is expected of them. Napoleon, we are coming.”

At 9 am, the next morning, the 3rd army started its assault on Stuttgart. Napoleon had withdrawn his troops to the opposite side of the city meaning Kutusov would either have to march through the city to get to him or take his army on the long march around it. Kutusov decided to march around it the city and set up his battle formation there before attacking Napoleon’s army. Kutusov had his artillery set up to the right of his forces where they tried to bombard Napoleon’s troops though they had little success.

As the 3rd army advanced, Napoleon sent his cavalry to stall the march. It also just so happened that Napoleon had set up his artillery on the side of the city where the 3rd was advancing so the Russians came under cannon fire as they fought off the attacks by the French cavalry. Kutusov saw his chance. He ordered his cavalry to charge the French artillery position while the French cavalry was bogged down by the infantry. As Kutusov hoped, the artillery position was poorly defended and the Imperial cavalry took it out of action.

However, on the other side of the battlefield, the French cavalry was attempting the same maneuver. Grapeshot and the 22nd Musketeers kept the artillery from being completely taken out of action but by the time the French retreat only 2 guns were still operational. Kutusov, unaware of what had happened to his artillery urged his men into formation. The real battle was about to begin.

I'm now subscribing to all the sub-forums. Too much is getting by me. Great work. I like the way the story is told from the perspective of the cabinet, and it's good to see another Colonial era mod in this style!

Chapter 10: Second Battle of the Titans Part II

As General Kutusov’s men reformed their ranks, Napoleon seeing his chance to cause chaos in the Russian ranks and ordered his men to charge. Kutusov’s men were able to get off a couple of volleys become the battlefield became a mass melee as the two armies slammed into each other. Both generals looked on anxiously as their armies struggled against each other.

Whichever army broke first would lose the battle. For Kutusov, his struggle for position as leader of the campaign would be undermined and the Buxhoewden would definitely use his misfortune to his advantage. For Napoleon, it would be his second loss against the Russians since the war began. Driven to action by this realization, Napoleon rode close behind the lines of his troops and urged them on. Kutusov stayed a ways back, nervously observing and directing his troops via messengers.

Meanwhile the Russian artillery, was under attack by the French cavalry. Fortunately, Kutusov had left a regiment nearby to aid the artillery. The French cavalry was, however, well trained and they inflicted many casualties before they were forced back. The artillery was able to recover and resume their firing. As Napoleon was on the opposite side on the city it was hard get a good target to hit and many shells fell within the city killing a total of 15 civilians and injuring 33 more. The artillery commander ordered the cannons to fall silent. They had done their part.

By 1 am, both armies were tired and desperate fighting for an advantage. The battle swung the Russians way when a French regiment tired and having all of its officers killed were routed. Seeing their comrades flee from the battle, morale amongst the French troops failed and a general rout ensued. Napoleon tried his best to get his soldiers to commit back to the battle and rode among their fleeing ranks urging them to fight with their lives. In doing so, he and his bodyguards were exposed to the charging Russian infantry who seeing the Emperor of France and a chance at glory charged forward with purpose. Realizing the situation, Napoleon tried to escape with his life but it was too late and he was stabbed with a bayonet while fleeing.

He was said to have slumped forward dead on his horse and was only kept from falling to the ground by the timely assistance of his brave bodyguards. The French army seeing that the battle was lost, surrendered.

Though the battle had been won, the Kutusov’s army had over 9,000 casualties with lost 3,479 men with 6,324 wounded but the entire force of the French army of 16,000 men had been killed or taken prisoner. The French occupation of Baden-Wurttemberg was over. “Today, has seen the Russian Imperial Army obtain a great victory,” Kutusov later wrote. “With Napoleon dead and his army destroyed, the French will have no choice but to negotiate their surrender.” However, Kutusov and the Russian Imperial Army would be highly disappointed. Napoleon turned out not to be dead but merely wounded yet again and set about readying France to defend itself against an imminent Russian invasion.

A month after the battle, word from Vyazmitinov reached both Kutusov and Buxhoewden that they were to share joint leadership of the Russian campaign in the west. Whatever petty disagreements between them were to be set aside to ensure victory. Kutusov was also ordered to turn over control of Baden-Wurttemberg to a new government that was sympathetic to the coalition and return to Kassel. Thus, on November 23, Kutusov officially handed over control of Baden-Wurttemberg and begrudgingly returned with the 3rd Imperial Army to Kassel and to Buxhoewden to plan the next stage of the campaign which would see them for the first time fight on French soil.

A great battle story. I like the twist that Napoleon is not dead (if I remember correctly, he can only be wounded, not killed - your story makes good use of this feature of the game). Your story-telling and close-up view of Napoleon made me feel as if I was on the battlefield. Will the Russian Imperial Army be able to hold this ground and advance after taking so many casualties - I look forward to finding out!

Thanks, Alwyn. That feature of NTW was annoying the first time I encountered it but it does make for good storytelling.

    Welcome to TWC, mrCharlesWix!

Good luck with your Extended Prussian campaign. If you'd like to post AARs from the Campaign, they'd be welcome here on the Writers' Study.
