    Icon3 Garrison revamp

    Hi all!

I love how DeI has made the overall unit roster of Rome 2 much more interesting. One thing I loved about previous Total War games was the ability to not only make up armies, and balance them in accordance to my economics, but also decide which units would form my garrisons, with key cities and "capitals" having a more advanced (and expensive) garrison, whereas minor settlements and cities would sometimes only have a basic "police" unit. I always made up my garrisons of two to four actual garrison units, like thorakitai or hoplitai in my Hellenic campaigns, and the others being levies and locals (mostly missiles).

I like how in Rome 2 armies are much more important than individual units, but I feel like I don't always want to station armies in cities to defend it (seems unrealistic to me, and barely necessary seeing the current AI's behavior. What I'm suggesting is to have the current options of "fortified", "economic" and "ordinary" cities have a bigger impact on garrisons. In my opinion a basic garrison should only have a couple of semi-professional "police" units, and some missile levies, whereas a fortified garrison would then perhaps have more of those "police" units, perhaps even better arms and armor for the levies. A more differing and less chaotic (many levy units, no unity => few and better melee units, more levy missiles) garrison would not only be more of a tactical matter for your own campaign, it would also make for more interesting and variable town and city assaults (arguably even a better AI). Currently I find some of the Barbarian garrisons to actually live up to my expectations of a garrison, having more capable melee units and a more homogenous garrison structure. I do realize a Hellenic or Eastern garrison would have differed a lot from e.g. a Celtic garrison, but a garrison with 3 levy pikemen, 1 levy hoplitai, 2 levy archers, 2 levy slingers, 2 levy javelin men and 2 ekromoi hoplitai doesn't seem realistic to me either. But that's my opinion anyway, this is something that bothered me just enough to make me share it with you.

Seeing as most battles are currently being fought against garrisons, perhaps some overhaul in a similar way to the future naval overhaul could be part of DeI's plans? If not I can understand, and I have plenty of faith in your modding work to know the end result will be phenomenal

We have completely tossed out the vanilla garrison system and built it up with all-new units for our revamp in 0.95. It has been structured in such a fashion that each culture group gets 5 garrison units. A basic citizen unit, a missile unit, a militia unit, a more professional battle-line grade unit, and either a cavalry unit or a more elite foot unit depending upon the culture. You now only get garrisons through the main city buildings and the higher tier military buildings.

Basically, when you progress further in the building tiers, your garrisons will increase in quality. We're currently testing the new system to make sure it doesn't end up too op, but currently with a level 4 core building and a level 4 military building, you will have a 20 unit garrison consisting of 4 missile units, 2 militia units, 9 battle-grade units and 5 cavalry/elite units.

This structure is the same for all cultures, and what sets them apart are the types of units used.

Excellent work guys, and will the garrison units be specific to the reforms as well? I.E: Not having Hastati when we are in the Imperial reforms for Rome? Also, is there an ETA when the patch 0.95 will be released?
