    Default Shield Patterns

I've been playing around a bit with some nice shield patterns that someone linked to a while back.

Here's a new skin for the Carthaginian Sacred Band I put together. I like this shield design, but it's hard to make the extreme colour work with most skins. I think it works OK with this white and red skin for the Sacred Band though. The model is based on the Carthaginian General model, so it also looks a bit less Greek than the current one.

Possible new skin for the Basilikon Guard.

Possible new skin for AOR Hoplites.

I like especially the hoplite design, the egyptian is good too, but the sacred band is too bright for my taste... something with the dolphins or ships is more to my liking, but afterall it's up to you to choose

Who exactly used those Corinthian helmet blazons? They look nice (especially the first one with the orange background), they just seem kind of odd.

The shields look awesome on the models, though.

DBH, toning down the colour a bit should be a quick and easy job with PSP or photoshop, otherwise they look great!
If you want a quick and nice job you could use the rebel "factions" flags to make a very light pattern for AOR hoplites shields so that they could be different for every faction...

The first sacred Band version at the top uses a hi-res skin and a high detail model, which might cause a performance hit for some people, so I made another version based on the Heavy Infantry model. It has no cape, less white in the skin, and I darkend the shield design a bit as well.

Here's an in-game shot. I'm still using the earlier hi-res skin for the officers.

The version 4.1.15 is available with the new basilikon, Hoplite, and Sacred Band (second version) skins.

Zarax: I might do different faction skins for the AOR Hoplites at some point, but that would require a non-merc version which would involve some extra complications.

Racer X: It does seem a little odd to put a picture of a helmet on a shield doesn't it?

Kara Kolyo: The Dolphin and Ship designs would be perfect for Marines. Just a pity that the Athenian Marines don't have shields.

Any chance of a hoplite unit with one of these savoury new shield designs for ICS or Pontus?

Hippias: Some time I'll probably make skins for all the factions that can recruit AOR Hoplites.

The trident was used exclusively by the Mantineans I believe (maybe by several other states), so I think it'd be better to give a more universal Greek symbol on that unit.

The Trident was used by the Mantineans, but it was simply one of the most common symbols of Poseidon, who was their patron god. Religous symbols like that are about as close as you can get to universal for the ancient Greeks.

By the time of the game period the city states had all moved towards professional armies that were paid and equiped by the state. Most of them used shield blazons for battlefield identification purposes, and those blazons tended to be simple geometric patterns because that was cheaper to mass produce. Surprisingly CA's arrangement of red dots is a pretty good guess as to what might have been adopted as a universal symbol. The ball was one of the symbols associated with Apollo, and his cult had become very popular in the hellenistic period, so various geometric arrangements of balls were often used in shield blazons.

The only problem with that, of course, is that it's boring.

Different shield patterns deffinetely bring more colour to the game. I am glad to see that you are always willing to test new designs, DimeBagHo. There is an image of a reconstruction of a hoplite armour with an octopus on the shield that pops up in Yahoo image search. Looked rather pretty when I put it on a skin.
The shield designs that start this thread are for models methinks - even better ones could be found for XGM. Mind you, I was pleasantly surprised with the ones that you use now when I started playing your mod
Cheers and thank you for the XGM - my favourite now

    And to complete:

(now I know how to post images on forum, ha)
