The Athenians, being seafarers, and having extensive contacts and commerce in both the northern Aegaean and the wider black sea, gather up a Ex-mercanary captain, a dozen or so men, a large quantity of silver, and a small fast ship. These men pose as amber merchants, as amber merchants at the time carried little cargo and large sums of cash, and regularly traveled into the black sea at the mouth of the Mighty Istros(Danube) river, the southern Terminus of the "Amber road". Again, nothing was seen as unusual with these men having a fast ship, as pirates where a menace and the greek amber merchants were usually a well funded bunch.
But why these men were to buy a small amount of Amber to maintain cover of their story, there real goal was to seek out this vast and Rumored "Celtoi" horde that was spoken of in Stolen Macedonian spy reports, and by Thracian traders and Geatae tribesmen. These men's mission was to find the location of this great barbarian horde, the number and quality of their armaments, their intentions and intended direction of travel, and to meet with their leader to acertain both their intentions and to see weather they could be swayed to Plataean interests.
