Default American man claims disputed territory in North Africa to make his daughter a 'princess'

As a birthday gift to his daughter this guy has decided it's totally OK again for Westerners who have never lived there to swan into Africa and claim countries in land that is not theirs. He is now 'King of North Sudan' and his daughter is princess. The 19th century is back! This was all so his 7 year old could be a 'real' princess because she is obsessed with the idea. They have now asked all their friends to address her as 'Princess Emily'. Imagine what a nightmare she's going to be.

He is now seeking political recognition for his 'kingdom', in the middle of land already claimed by both Egypt and Sudan:

This story is so absurd it's almost funny. I also loved all the people on news websites commenting that it was a lovely gesture. I wonder if the Sudanese were so keen on the idea of this guy claiming land.

The sanctomonious hypocrites at "The Guardian" took it very seriously.

Interestingly today I was thinking, now that we have the diseases mostly beat, what if we restarted good old fashioned colonialism in Africa. As a rule things would be better for everyone.

    To keep it funny:
This is a puppet of Sissi... now Sissi hopes Sudan takes that territory so he can use that invasion to justify his attack on Sudan and claim all the land up to the 2nd cataract... long live Pharao Sissi!

    This can only end well.

Then again he could have gone one step further and proclaimed himself emperor claiming de jure ownership to all the roman empire's former holdings in the process.

Probably more credible that buying a piece of real estate on the Moon or an asteroid, proclaiming it sovereign and making her a Lunar Princess or Archduchess of iRock.

Eh, who amongst us can claim they traveled to a forsaken patch of earth and claimed it as their kingdom? My hat is off to the good king, in the respect that is due Royalty.

At least his castle has no chance of sinking in a swamp.

Possibly, just possibly, you're taking this just a hair too seriously?

    The Principality of Sealand

Located on the military fortress of Rough Tower, Sealand is the smallest country in international waters. The country‘s national motto is "From the Sea, Freedom" (E Mare Libertas), reflecting its continuing struggle for liberty through the years.
Sealand has been an independent sovereign state since 1967. The Bates family governs the small state as hereditary royal rulers, each member with his own royal title.
Sealand has its own constitution, composed of a preamble and seven articles. The state’s constitution deals with several matters, including its status as a constitutional monarchy. While Sealand follows its own constitution, its legal system supposedly still adheres to British common law.
People can show support for Sealand by purchasing noble titles and becoming a lord or a lady. Sealand also sells ID cards and a piece of land on the principality to help sustain its independence for the years to come. Other official Sealand products are also available for sale on this website. See shop

I call dibs on the chancellorship or the war ministry.

I don't see the daughter growing up to be a spoiled brat at all, especially not with her insisting everyone calls her a princess and her parents demanding she receives disputed land. (Sarcasm)

I wish he tried this in Kashmir.

I wish he had tried it at my neighbors house. I am tired of them anyways. And then when this idiot caused a problem I would get to say I slapped a king.

I thought it was rather sweet going to all that effort, plus has mentioned he claimed land that isn't haited by anyone, has no real economic worth and is miles away from civilization so its not as if Sudan has lost out.

I hope he pulls it off, can't imagine any of the extremists in the region would approve though. If there are any.

It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, who salutes the flag, who serves beneath the flag, and whose coffin is draped by the flag, who allows the protester to burn the flag." -- Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, USMC
