The city population is only the part that can be used as soldiers...

This will be more apparent in MTW2 as each unit type will have its own pool of recruitable soldiers within the population.

The number at the top right of each unit card displays the amount of available recruitable units of that type.

So i am guessing that castles will be able to recruit more of the same unit than the cities can??

I'm glad they have added this, I never liked how in RTW there was no limit on how many of a unit type you can raise. There are only SO many nobles in a region to turn into knights after all.
Does anyone know what determines how many of a type you can raise, beyond more for castles, less for cities?
I think I read about this somewhere but I cant recall where...
