    Alexandria in the Caucus

Deep in the mountains of the Hindu-Kush on the crossroads of the many valleys within lies one of the many Alexandrias built by Alexander himself. This city lies on an important crossroads, made into a Citadel of Greek planning and settled by thousands of Macedonians. This is the Center of Hellenism in the East and represents the furthest stretch made by Alexander and his attempts to spread the Hellenic world to the furthest reaches of the world. From here a whole new Hellenic Kingdom can arise, held in the hands of the Kleandros and his Dyansty.

    Kleanid Dyantasy

    Kleandros - Κλέανδρος
    Born 355 AC (33)

Rising to prominence among Alexander's companions, the relatively unknown Kleandros gained favor from Alexander for his logistical skills and methodical approach to battle that always resulted in victory. Dark brown hair and beard, most of his features where hidden, his eyes also dark. Stern features and a medium build he could easily be passed up as a face that blends into the crowd, though his prowess on and off the battle field made him a name to be recognized. A quiet man among his peers, his eyes are a set stare that tell of unwavering resolve.

Having no desire to return to obscurity among the Macedonian provinces back home, he was more than happy to take up the work of bringing civilization to the new and warm lands of the Far east. For once in his life taking pleasure in his surroundings, aside from his wife has has taken one or two concubines from the local populace. Once word of Alexanders illness reached him he rushed to be at his side. His heart was with his lord in Babylon but his mind was already back in the Indus to his new home.

    Family:

    Wife: Demetria Δημητρια (Age 31)

Sister: Phoibe Φοιβη (Age 26 unmarried)

    Son: Kyrillos Κυριλλος (Age 11)

    Daughter: Athenais Αθηναις (age 0)

    Lands of the Kleanids

    Capital: Alexandria on the Caucus
    Provinces:
    Taxila
    Bactra
    Alexandria Arachosia
    Alexandria in Opiana
    Kophen

    Military of the Kleanids

    Kleanid Military:
Being far flung from the homeland of Macedonia, the Kleanids must make use of the Local and surrounding peoples to heavily supplement their own. Though not as well trained or disciplined as the few Macedonian soldiers, the local forces know the land well and how to fight in its mountains terrain better than any Greek. The native warrior’s fierceness in battle and willingness to defend their homeland more than makes up for their lack of proper training.

Far East AOR: 3,500 men per province (6)
    Professional: 3000 men
    Allied: 6,000 men
    Levy: 12,000 men
    Total: 21,000 men

    Royal Guard: 2000 (Professional/Elites) (10,000 pts)

Indian Royal Elephants (Elite Heavy Cavalry) 400 : The lands of India is home to largest breed of Elephant ever seen before by the armies of Alexander. Used for centuries by the warlords of India, the new Hellenic kings of the land were quick to adopt these creatures into their armies to supplement for the lack of noble greek cavalry from the homeland. These animals are the best of their breed, armoed by the Royal blacksmiths and carry the generals and noble family into battle. These animals more than make up for any lack of power in the Indo-Greek charge! - (2000 pts)

    -Hetaroi ('companions'): 600
->The Companions form the Royal Guard of Horse, the personal bodyguard of the King; they are usually leaded by the King himself to battle. The Companions wear heavy armor, with bronze muscular cuirasses, greaves and Boeotioan helmets; they carry xystons, heavy thrusting spears, and kopis, should the xyston be broken in a charge. (3,000 points)

Mármaraspídes (Marble shields/ Elite Heavy Troop) 1000 : imitating the colors of the white homes of their homeland, the marble shields take great pride in their Hellenic heritage, and is the main body guard of the Kleanid family. Chosen from the new Macedonian nobles of the land, they are the pride of the East. They are veterans of the far eastern campaign who had seen the most battle by the end of Alexander’s conquests. The backbone of the entire Indo-greek phalanx. -(5000 pts)

Regular Army: 1000 (Professional) (2000 pts)

-Pezhetairoi ('Foot Companions'/Heavy Troop): 1000 :The Foot Companions as Alexander liked to name them were the core of the Hellenistic battle-line and comprised most of the battle phalanx. They wield the sarissas, with bronze helmets (Phrygian caps) and linothorax, a small Illyrian shield covering their torso and arms, but leaving them both hands to hold the long pike. Made up of the sons of the veterans from the East, they are small in number but are well trained by their veteran parents.

    Allied Forces: 6000 (11,000 pts)

Bactrian Hippeis (Heavy Cavalry) 1000: Armed with Lance and swords of barbaric design, these “noble” warriors from the many clans of the Bactria have been lured into service for the Kleanids with promises of glory and riches the likes they could never imagine. -(3000 pts)

Scythian Horse Archers (Missile Cavalry) 1000: Hailing from the numerous tribes north Bactria nad Persia; they traveling in mass throughout the region and make fine mercenaries for any army. Their fast strikes and accurate archers make them feared throughout the civilized world. -(3000 pts)

Persian Archers (Archers) 1000: Thousands of years of warfare among numerous empires and influenced by the northern nomadic tribes. These Persians are able archers and great supplement to any army. Though not from the region, they are able warriors in any field. -(1000 pts)

Bactrian Hillsmen (Light Infantry/Axemen) 1000: Armed with various shields and cruel looking Axes, these hillsmen are savage warriors that can split shield and armor in two. Although they are Ill-disciplined, these men make up for it by being fearless in battle. A good commander will hold them back long enough to be able shore up any weakening in the Kleanid lines, able to push back any attempt for an enemy to exploit it. -(1000 pts)

Scaled-Hoplties (Heavy Infantry/Spearmen) 1000: Made up of the immigrants but by Alexander; Greeks, Macedonians, Thracians, all Hellenic peoples that have been settled throughout the east. These warriors take up arms in the style of their forebears, with scaled armor in the fashion of the eastern tribes of the Bactrians and Scythians instead of the traditional linen Linothorax. (2000 pts)

Peltasts (Skirmishers) 1000: Consisting of all types of men from greeks to Bactrians, Persians to Indians, they have all been trained in the art of the Peltasts. With sufficient training to last in any terrain or kingdom. Probably the hardiest of ranged warriors next to the professional troops themselves. (1000 pts)

    Levied Forces: 12,000 (19000 pts)

Indian Bamboo Archers (2000) : Armies of India are made up predominantly of archers. These local forces use the traditional Bamboo Longbow, and cane arrows to great effect. Though not professional by any means, their sheer number and great distance arc made by their arrows will strike down any great number of enemies. -(2000 pts)

Eastern Spearmen (Light Infantry) (2000): Levied from the populations of the entire kingdom, these are the bulk of the military. From the Bactria to India, these men are armed with large wicker and bamboo shields and iron tipped spears. -(2000 pts)

Levy Phalanx (Heavy infantry) (5000): Drawn from the native population, these men have been hastily trained in the form of Phalanx warfare. They are nowhere near the professionalism of their Macedonian counterparts. Their training is light but they can hold a Sarrisa well enough, though their discipline is shaky at best. -(10000 pts)

Indian Sword infantry (Light Infantry/Swordsmen) (2000) : The armies of northern India have long used swords in their military, notabley straight swords (many precursor to the famed Khanda of later years). Though lightly armored, this makes them fast and less encumbered, able to last long in battle while cutting bloody swathes through enemies.-(2000 pts)

    Bactrian Outriders (Light Cavalry) 1000:
These horsemen hale from the fertile plains of the Bactria, though not professional troops their horsemanship is fair. Learning some from the steppe tribes to the north and as well as fighting them, they do well in their own lands and make passable scouts and fast attack on the flanks of armies. (3000 pts)

    Total Point Value: 42,000

A small train of riders there were, each mounted on horses clearly bred for their speed and not for their battlefield prowess, the heds and faces of the mounted men obscured by head-wraps of linen stained by sand, rain and bitter frost- all of which they had encountered on their way toward and through the mountain passages and trackways of the Hindu-Kush. Wary they were, all of them down to the eldest among them, none having travelled so far away from their homeland and after this it was doubtful they would ever wish to again.

Through other lands they had ridden, through greener and yet more dangerous territories if they had been discovered, being followers of a man who- until very recently, after an act of pure faith -had been looked upon by his subjects as no more than a usurper and a betrayer to the deceased coward, Darius the Third. Artobyzus, after emerging from the inner chamber of his temple, had acted quickly, and this delegation into the most eastern reaches of Alexander's conquests was just once such decision he had made for the progression of his lands and the people therein.

The Persians are lead to the top of the Acropolis into the Villas of Kleandros, escorted by his Macedonian royal guard. As they were escorted towards the main hall, they would notice an increase of Indian and Bactria nobles inside. All speaking their foreign tongue, some even conversing friendly with Macedonias themselves in greek!

Brought into a large room filled with Tapestries some would recognize as art of Alexander himself, some taken from the great conquests of the Indus itself. Kleandros stands next to his son around a table pointing at places on a map, from what the Persians could could see it was cities on a map, but not a tactical map but more of a city plan. Without looking up at the Persians Kleandros becons them forward, "Come my western friends, look at what i have planned. " He points to various sections of the map, of this city, whether it was a new city or an old one these persians would not know. "I plan to build temples to the gods and new homes for all my people."he looked into the eyes of the Persians, "And my people are those all about the Haidu-Kush mountains. Macedonians and otherwise. Tell me foreigners, why have you come to this place? The last refuge of Alexander's dream for the east. "

The envoy among the group, a tall and lean Persian with a greying but magnificient beard, clearly an elder of his people, cocked his head to one side and studied the Makedonian who had caused the cowardly Satrap of Baktria to bend the knee- a man who claimed to do all for the good of his people, all his people, yet called them foreigners! Foreigners nearly in their own land. There was only one true xenos here, and it was not he and his horsemen.

"First I must tell you that we have sent a delegation to Diadotus, so-called Satrap of Sogdiana and the northern territories of the East. They were sent there with the proposal of a defensive treaty against you, as well as an offer of profitable trade through the desert regions."

Like all Persians- young or old, man or woman -Artobyzus considered honesty and openness to be some of the highest virtues, and openly encouraged it in all his subjects. From the lowest-born to the most noble-blooded of them.

"My King, Artobyzus of Sagartia, does bid me however to offer the same terms to you. He owns little, his kingdom one of sand and wind-swept deserts, yet events such as the subjegation of nearby provinces concern him as much as any other ruler whose homeland has been occupied by an alien people and their equally alien culture and Gods. We therefore come before Kleandros in the hope of friendship and open trade between our peoples, that both might prosper and live without fear of an outside adversary."

A letter is delivered, coming from the north.

    Kleandros,

You may have little knowledge about me but like you, I was one of Alexander's close companions and I have taken up residence as the Satrap of Sogdiana, shifting my court between Marakanda and Alexandria Eschate. Due to the recent events I have an agreement to offer you and I'd like us to meet outside Baktra, bringing no more than 20 companions on horse. You can send your response to Marakanda.

    Best wishes,
    - Diadotus

Kleandros considered the Persian's words. If he was totally honest he envied the Persians and their openness. He had figured as much that his latest claim would earn him fast enemies, fearful of his expansion. Envious of him, afraid of him, but not willing to give battle. With a thoughtful look on his face he came closer to look at the elder Persian in the eyes, "Your lands are of Persia, Persians live there in relative peace and worship their gods freely. This much I respect, and your protection of them by this...king. So quick to claim a kingship after the death of the emperor, makes me sad. But out of love for our former masters wish, to unite all people in peace, I will agree to your terms. As long as the Macedonians and greeks that have been settled in persia will be treated fairly as Alexander would have wished it. That they are not harassed or treated poorly."

Kleandros turned to the city plans before him and pushed them away to reveal a map of the entire eastern region. "I will not leave into Persia, attack those you protect, but I ask you do not deter me from trying to peace together what is left of Alexander's eastern hopes." he outlines the indus valley to Oraea and Pusa.

"I will not attack Persia, this is my word. May all gods curse me if I do. My word will hold as long as there is no bad blood between us. I ask you though, will you come to our aid if the Satrap Diadotus attacks us? "

"Bessus, may all the Gods curse him," retorted the elderly nobleman, "made himself King of Kings mere hours after the death of beloved Darius. In such light, I do not see my own, a man forgiven for his defection to your own King, as anything but a man intent on preserving what the conquest and death of Alexandors has left behind."

Glancing at the map, quite detailed for the age in which they were living, the Persian watched as the Makedonian outlined his plan. This Kleandros was ambitious, he would admit that, though perhaps just a little too sure of his own power.

"I can say without hesitation that my King respects, as much as yourself, those under his protection- Greek, Persian and those of the Eastern lands alike. No harm shall befall them, from his hand at least, nor shall he make any attempt to deter you from what you intend. He has no interest in the East-beyond-the-mountains. I assure you."

True words spoken by an honest Persian, such words were rarely, if ever, spoken among Makedonians and Greeks.

"Would we help you in a time of need? By the Gods, yes. Yet between here and our own lands lay opposition, from other Persian Satraps and from others. Moving an army through there lands would be an act of war upon them, and Artobyzus is not strong enough to fight a succession of battles...even to help an ally such as Kleasandros."

While not a perfect agreement, it was true that Artobyzus neither had the manpower nor the route with which to approach Diadotus even if he should attack. In his way stood those that still saw him as a traitor, or that would gladly take his head, but few that would willingly bend their knee in the way that some had to this Makedonian overlord.

Kleandros nodded his head in thought, then took a step forward his hand outstretched. "I offer this hand to your lord in agreement, that trade and peace shall last between us. I wish your lord, who was loyal to Alexander until his death, good fortune in the future. I hope in the future that relations between our two lands warms to a point where we might discuss greater things for both our families..."

The way was now free, to unite the east, to safeguard Alexander's dream....and to begin to realize his own.

The Persian ambassador tentativley reached out his own hand and sealed the agreed proposal in the Makedonian manner, his mind already building a report of this meeting for his ruler but a smile plastered on his features all the same. They were all the same, these Makedonians, believing in their own horse excrement and seeing themselves as rulers of places that were not theirs to rule.

"Blessings upon you and your house, Kleandros of Makedon, I will now take my leave."

With one quick glance back at the far-eastern tyrant and his flourishing court, the envoy and his fellows retreated back to their mounts and were soon on their way home. How pleasant it would be to return to Ysatis, though how his lord would react he really could not say.

These enoys are shown to the top of Kleandros's Acropolis into his halls. They find Kleandros has pinned up a great map of the east on one of the walls and Kleandros's himself stands before it before turning to meet these envoys.

More satraps? How many of my brothers have splintered trying to grab that which is not theirs?
    he thought to himself.

"From where do you hail brothers? And what can ....I, do for you." Kleandros hesitates to name himself any title.

'' My lord, I Aristolen, his royal representative of my king, Hellenus the Mighty, ruler of the Hellenid Kingdom, offer you an trade agreement. Trade would bring mostly much benefit to our two nations. I would very much like to establish an trade agreement. We also offer an non aggression should you so wish to my lord, ''

The envoy bowed having completed the first half of his mission.

'' Thank you, very well my liege, what do you say of the non aggression pact? It can provide us an certain benefit should we be attacked in the future. War can happen anytime anywhere, and we will honor our agreement in this one. If you refuse, than that is fine. ''

"Non-Agression is fine, i agree. I hope to never see your armies close to my lands, or my army close to yours. Give your lord my best wishes that our next meeting will be as fortuitous as this."

Kleandros smiled, one less satrap to worry about for the moment. He would pen Persia in and make sure non became too powerful.

Thank you my lord. After much delibraten however, we have decided to cancel our non aggression pact since it does not serve our interests. The trade agreement will stand, and if you will allow me, I must depart.

The envoy departed from the halls, going home.
