The Lather Tanner allows you to build the Barracks. The Barracks will allow you to recruit troops.
Build higher tier Lather Tanners(smiths) to be able to build higher tier Barrack. For you can recruit Higher tier Troops.
Edit: In HTW 3.5 King Ganon is not a general. In the newest version he will be. Just not in this Campaign. This means he can not do General stuff, like build watch tower, or hire mercenary's.
Edit 2: You should click on a settlement, Open the construction window. Then open the tech-tree(Buildings) window from there.
Once you do that, you can see all the options you can ever build in a settlement. This will vary from Settlement to settlement.
Edit 3: You should really explore the in-game windows. You will learn a lot.
Edit 4: To answer your question. Yes, mines are profitable. Farms and trade give you less ruppees then the mine does.
Edit 5: You can see what a building does to your settlement by looking at the 3 buttons at the bottom of the construction window.
Edit 6: Make sure you don't accidentally kill King Ganon or your generals. By hitting them with Arrow/Spears/Artillery shots.
Edit 7: To the north lie the gerudo, the Darknuts, and the Zuna. Farther north from them lie the Gohma.

Yet more advice for you, very sorry for the endless stream of 'helpful' comments ^^'
The AI will automatically attack any of your undefended border towns, regardless of diplomatic status. It'll help you a lot if you leave at least 5 cards of units (even Miniblin or Bokoblin) in Ordonafawn, just to keep the Darknut from doing anything rash...
And on the Moblin Kingdom, they are a coalition of sorts. They consist of the Miniblins (tiny and expendable), Bokoblins (Link-sized and marginally more intelligent than the rest), Moblins (Dominant Blin race, large and brutish but cunning) and Bigblins (huge but utterly idiotic). Also minor races like the Dodoblins (Like Bokoblins, no survival instinct), Blinox (Moblins cross-bred with bomb-throwing Hinox) etc. Also their diplomat unit appears to be a Zuna, which I guess is open to interpretation...

"Honor, Wisdom, and The Freedom of the Common Man"-- The Code of The Republic
Yes, but Crayon Imports from Labrynna come slowly, and Gannon's meaty hands tend to crack them in half. Not to mention that the white ones are always useless, but Cralynna insists on putting two in each pack.
Be very careful when expanding out to the east. the Ordona province will SMASH you with thier cavalry if you come unprepared. If you want to go into thier territory you should get bublin troopers (archers)
cheers!

Some things of note.
1) Miniblins are your earliest anti-cavalry. Read their special traits.
2) You can/should send a general to explore your territory. To ether build watch towers for you can keep an eye in your territorys. Or to locate which territorys you can hire mercenarys in.
3) If you are in need of troops fast. Do 2 things. "1" stop all your settlements from building things. "2" send a General to the territorys that have mercenarys. And Hire as many as needed with the money you would have spent on Building things.
4) There are some things you need to know about mercenarys. "1" mercenarys will cost you more in the long run then if you just trained your own troops. "2" mercenarys for hire will slowly appear in the territorys they spawn in. But they will stop spawning in a territory if the number of mercenarys for hire reaches a serten number. (like 20). If the number of mercenarys for hire is under that number, they will spawn more mercenarys for hire over time, until they reach that number again.
5) If you want to make an alliance with the Darknuts, the Zuna, the Gerudo, and the Gohma. You should do it before you declare war on any budy. The more factions you are at war with, the harder it is to make allies.
6) If you want to make your Empire Bigger before you go to war with another faction. Then I suggest you take the territorys south of Ordona, (The ones in the mountains) and the territorys south east of Ordona, (These territorys are to the south of the The Deku Tribes, Kokiri, and Lizalfos, But are to the Wast of the Labrynna Regime). I've Linked these factions to their threads, so you can see what they have before you passably go to war with them.
7) Cavalry are a great way to obliterate infantry and archer. Just charge them with your Cavalry. Until the Cavalry plow in to the enemy troops. Then pull back your Cavalry, and repeat. Just like a Hammer and Anvil. Also Cavalry are good for getting ride of Enemy Artillery. But watch out for enemy spear men. They will decimate your Cavalry.
8) A good way to use ranged units is to have them behind your infantry. And have them fire at will, and turn off skirmish mode, for they don't run, but shoot. This way, when the enemy Infantry charge you, your infantry are shielding your archers from them. your infantry can engage the enemy in melee. while your archer/ranged units, can do a ton of damage from safety.
9) Your Bulblin troops are your archers. And your Boar Riders are non-ranged Bulblin riding, well Boars. Which is your Cavalry. The Forest Blins are also ranged as you know. But they have shorter range then the Bulblin archer. How ever the Forest Blins are better in melee. So if you had a big army of Forest Blins, Bulblin troops, and other units that are not ranged, you should make a battle line like this.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
10) You use your artillery to great affect. Keep it up.:
11) If you have an Artillery in your army. You can use your Artillery to immediately attack a settlement when you get there, insted of have to wait and build ladders, rams, and siege towers. For you can attack a settlement. The reason for this is you can use your Artillery to brake openings in a settlement wall, for you can just march in. It may be a good idea to open multiple holes in the wall be for marching in. Also having multiple Artillerys in an army can greatly help you out. But if you have too many. It will make your army waeker than an enemey army of the same size, Because Artillery are not very good in a melee. and if your melee troops fale because of having too few or were over powered by better troops. Then your worst melee units will have to fight in melee, which wont end well.
12) Surrounding your enemy with melee troops is a good way to kill them.
Edit: 13)
Your Bulblin troops are a higher tier unit. So you will need to build a better smith. Which is the next level of Lather tanner. In order to get a better Barracks. To get the next tier of units.
Edit 2:
This link will tell you more about the Moblin faction.

Hey WC, there is a black area on your map to the south west. if you take it you can gain a decent settlement.
by the way, I saw how the Zuna became a member of our faction. Just how does that work? I have never seen anything like that before. Is it the same thing as becoming a vassal state?
I shall consume... consume everything
First off, good lets play.
Now I have some more tips for you "The Wise Coffin".
You can attack a settlement with out using ladders, rams and siege towers. But only if you have artillery in your army. Like Catapults.
You can brake down walls with your Catapults. But some Custom Settlement are Bugged, and in those Custom Settlement you can not target the walls with your Catapults, and you can not use Ladders or siege towers on those walls ether. But luckily you can use your Catapults and rams to brake down the city gates.
Edit:
About the Gerudo. They are a Race that was cursed to give Birth to 1 Male out of every 1,000+ Females. So all most their entire race is Female. So any male that is born is given high authority and has the responsibility to Prolong their race from Extinction. By being a father to countless children or by other means like what Ganondworf did.
The Gerudo are like muslim amazons. Also there was talk about them probably taking sex-slaves/husbands from the people they attack/raid/conquer. For they can have families of their own. Especially the Gerudo pirates, who are rebels to the Gerudo Nation.
Edit 2:
If an ally sieges a settlement. you can help them take that settlement by attacking it with your armys. But once the settlement is taken, It will be given to the faction that started to siege it first, That's why the Darknuts got the settlement and not you. On the other hand, Your relationship with the Darknuts will improve the more times you do that.
Also if you want to have better relationships with the Darknuts, I would suggest giving gifts and tribute to them by using your diplomats. Normaly give them Money/Rupees, A small amount at a time. That's what I did.
If you don't want the Gerudo to attack you. You need to have a standing army at your border settlements. If big enough, it will make the AI think twice about attacking you. But if your border settlements are not well Garrisoned with troops. It will be a Tempting and easy target for your neighbors. Don't give them a reason to attack and go to war with you. Unless that's what you want.
Edit 3:
Final thing.
Try not to cross your neighbors land with armys. It will Piss them off, and increase the chances of them attacking you as well as increasing the chances of them braking any alliance treaty's you have with them.
