Default Vice News - A hope for real journalism

I've started watching Vice News and reading there articles. I actually have hope for real, non-popcorn media.

    https://news.vice.com/

Look at this actual investigative journalism. Documentaries that provide in depth facts, and reporters going to places where news usually ignores.

I highly suggest it to the people here.

There's a Greek edition of Vice and I really don't like it because all they do is report on how it is being gay/atheist/Pakistani/druggie in Greece, and this is pretty much constant. The main Vice guys do have some nice reporting on things that are interesting and important, though.

I visit it every now and then, and I like what they're doing. I had never heard of the Greek version until you mentioned it, Stav. Is it that bad?

Yeah they even had some ads on TV with a guy getting slapped in the face by a raw steak in slow motion.

It's just the same old boring reactionary crap only covered in a better way than anyone else would in Greece. Imagine one of Kanakis' sermons on Radio Arvyla being made into a news report, lol.

Now that you mention the ad, I think I remember an ad on those bus stop posters or whatever they're called. Also, Kanakis, eeew.

The English version had a good degree of impartiality, the one from my country is some leftish crap.

Doesn't seem to have anything that isn't covered in more reputable media. And even if it did, its entertainment section is horrific, it seems to be aimed mainly at drug-obsessed hippies with severe depression.
A new mobile phone tower went up in a town in the USA, and the local newspaper asked a number of people what they thought of it. Some said they noticed their cellphone reception was better. Some said they noticed the tower was affecting their health.

A local administrator was asked to comment. He nodded sagely, and said simply: "Wow. And think about how much more pronounced these effects will be once the tower is actually operational."

I think we're confusing vice and vice news. Both have the same parent company but different philosophies. One is a tabloid one is serious news

Slightly more than substantially left of center. Entertaining though.

Its adrenaline journalism mostly and I suppose I appreciate that. CNN broke their way into this world doing just that in the First Gulf War.

I actually love CBS/NBC/ABC news now (AND I DON'T HAVE TO SIT THROUGH 3 HOURS OF BS), actually forgot about how AMAZINGLY they're still journalists. Dateline anyone? 60 Minutes? But we've become conditioned to think that News is the 24 hour rehash force fed us with bucket fulls of commentary by Fox News, MSNBC, CNN and their foreign counterparts.

Shane Smith directs the Vice Media Company and to be quite frank, he's kind of cock.

You can still find all of the news you could ever want in the AP and Reuters feeds.

Yes, he is. He started the Brooklyn-based hipster news source to be independent of mainstream media. It has stayed that way in terms of who they hire and content, however he is currently selling the company to a media conglomerate that he always said he despised.

Vice is good fro exactly this: A young Russian speaking journo who got his ass abducted and beaten by separatists yet has stayed in the country and continued to provide the single best source of news on the situation.

    I dig their "about" blurb:

"VICE News is an international news organization created by and for a connected generation. Bringing you an unvarnished look at some of the most important events of our time, and shining a light on underreported stories around the globe. We get to the heart of the matter with reporters who call it like they see it."

"Well, so long as it fits our strongly leftward editorial slant, that is."

Next stage could be a cable news network.

I've been following Vice for a few years now, I've seen them evolve from a extreme entertainment network (which it still mainly is) making documentaries about borderline topics. Their documentaries about native tribes, mind-altering substances and marginalized peoples are quite entertaining (though sometimes nauseating). The humor shows are also quite entertaining, though quite raunchy sometimes.

The new Vice News segment has gained massive popularity recently because of their uncensored coverage of the Syrian civil war, the Ukrainian situation and various other hot topic issues around the world. I enjoy their personal brand of journalism because they let the stories talk for themselves, instead of inserting their own blurb and opinion into the mix every few seconds. Though I have found certain points which seem like dubiously hidden propaganda, most of their body of work is pretty solid.

But the Vice network itself it huge, it has branches for music, art, communities, psychedelic etc. Shane Smith and co. have really created a vast media empire.

I actually really enjoyed the news updates they did from Ukraine.

I just hope that they don't turn out to be a bunch of pedophiles or frauds, because then my statement will come back to haunt me.

Jason Mojica is a pretty amazing journalist. I think he edits Vice News.

Bill Maher is listed as a producer, so he may have significant input.
