    Default Roman infantry formations

    Hello everyone!

I really love this mod and all it has to offer historically, but the infantry formations for the romans, or lack thereof, bothers me a little.
No, i'm not talking about the hollow square or testudo, those are actually quite good. What I'm talking about is the way the normal formations work for Romans. Historically they didn't too often break formation and fight the enemy one on one, they kept their tight formation, it made them a lot stronger as a unit and was one of the reasons why the Romans were so successful

In this game though, the romans break formation so quickly and start walking around trying to find a target to kill.

I suppose what I'm trying to ask is this; is there a way I, or a more experienced modder, could mod the unit spacing for the roman sword infantry? I'd like to see them have a tighter more cohesive formation, as well as give all the sword infantry some sort of shield wall ability.

on another note; I know that the gladius COULD be used to slash at the opponent, but historically the gladius was mainly used for stabbing, so would there be a way to take out all the attack animations for the romans besides the stabbing animation?

i have done some tests for animations, and the shield wall ability really looks great for the romans, although they dont run.

Doesn't run as in it doesn't work? or as in the Romans can physically run, because if its the latter, I'd still be content with that as I don't really make my units run everywhere anyways.

I think if these ideas are implemented, a good workaround for the romans not being able to run would be to re-add the ability from the vanilla game that booster the speed of a unit temporarily.

I'm no modder though, so I'm not sure if these ideas COULD be implemented, but I'm sure there are many that agree with me about the way the romans work in this game.

    oh, and another thing!

I'm sure other may have asked this before, but are there any plans on your end *the DEI team* to fix the spacing for other unit formations? as currently, when you put hoplites in phalanx formation, the front ranks of the men aren't in a straight line, same with a lot of units with a shield wall/phalanx ability. Instead, the some units stand further out, some tucked back into the second rank. It's not really a big issue, but I am just a wee bit OCD about things like that

Thanks you MrBeefyII but I already have that mod, and while that helps, it still doesn't really help the formations from turning into a semi-formation blob. What really causes this problem I think is when your men are in formation, and then one or two after a while decide to venture off into to fray to fight, and over time more and more follow him, turning it into a blob. Could there be a way to force every man to stay in their formation, without a few deciding they want to be adventurous

    Hey!

You are totally right. This is what sort of ruins the game for me too. It is just completely unrealistic and stupid. However there isnīt much that you can do about it. I have tried messing around with numerouse things and this is something that is hard coded in the war scape engine.
    So sorry, cannot mod this

There is a mod called Better Roman formations http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfile...man+formations.

The issue i have with this mod(DeI compatible) is that i don't get the throw pila at will wich Realistic Legionary Tacticshttp://steamcommunity.com/sharedfile...man+formations have, but RLT's shieldscreen ability seems to be not DeI compatible.

Personally i think that the no pila at will thing is a bigger issue for me atleast. Altough id like to have a shieldscreen ability aswell, not the shieldwall since then i can't choose how wide a formation i want.

this is true barbarians got better formations than romans...

Wall of shield is just sooo hard to break and one unit can easy fight against few units, and romans act like barbarians and runing around i fight one on one...

Why barbarians can have good formations and romans don`t?

especialy that barbarians attack like hord and romans stuck in formations... i don`t understand.

Last two posts by Marcus Marcellus and A_I are on point DeI has dumbed down Roma as a faction too much. Pila are useless I have never seen my Roman units use their Pila !

The Roma AI always gets destroyed in the game. The Barbarians are too advanced special formations and way OP elite units. The game is called Rome TW 2 not the Fall of Rome.

No matter what faction I play when it comes time in mid game to "take out Rome" I find Rome to been destroyed or pathetic and week.

Yes Rome lost battles but they had the ability to raise new armies and the Roman army had strong tactics that in the end allowed them to over power their enemies. Never in DeI have I seen this happen after 150 plus hours of play with DeI.

Possibly DEI Team can implement Realistic Legionary Tactics in the mod and make it compatible.

BunnyPoopCereal: that would be the best of all possible things i think. I have several mods that gives bonuses to "major" factions(Rome is one) to help them stay in to my late games. And this Realistic Legionary Tactics is just wonderfull(iv'e tried it in vanilla and with the Roma Family mod) It is compatible with DeI, it's just the shieldscreen ability that isn't compatible in DeI(and that really helped to hold formation/battle lines)

So if they made it compatible with DeI i would track down the DeI team and kiss them or something. It would save the Romans untill i crush them myself atleast...
