Default The arrival of a King

With words of the capital being taken by House Lannister having reached the ears of the Stormlord, Robert Baratheon rode slowly, followed by a small retiniue of household guards into the city, seeing already both the banners of House Lannister and House Arryn upon the walls and on top of the camp tents outside the city.
The retiniue of a few hundred riders also brought along with them the corpse of Prince Rhaegar Targaryen, protected by a wooden sacrophag. Even though Robert sometimes was in the mood to simply order to throw his dead nemesis into the sea or just bury the body somewhere, as the look upon him still reminded him on a still missing Lyanna, he kept nevertheless his promise and would grant the Targaryen his last wish.
His leg had healed during the month and the pain was slightly going away, even though the leg would probably itch from time to time during the next months, as the Maester said and leave a scar as well, reminding Robert maybe for the rest of his life. Another reason, which darkened his mood - not only had he missed the surrounding of the Dornish forces, but was now forced to ride useless into the capital like an old lord at the end of his lifetime. The aftermath of the rebellion turned slowly rather in a bitter victory, as the future King noticed.
All his enemies have been slain, he was never beaten in battle and nearly all Lord Paramounts have surrendered to his command or aided him during the last battles of the rebellion - but he was still alone
and Lyanna wasn't here to see his greatest triumph.

Ser Barristan Selmy entered the capital city, or at least what remained of it, in the company of Lord.. Or, uh, King Robert. The Lord-turned-King had kept true to his word. Selmy had not been mistreated by the Baratheon's men and was kept closer to a captive guest than a true prisoner, he'd been pardoned or would be..but it left a sour taste in his mouth. His Silver Prince was dead..and now he needed to be buried, he was happy Rhaegar would be given that much.

The city gates open and Lord Arryn, wearing courtly robes, rides to receive Robert. He is escorted by his household guards and the High Lords of the Vale, in all its pomp everyone dresses with magnificence, the streets have been cleaned and the Red Keep refurbished for its new inhabitant. People started to crowd all the way from the King's Gate to the Red Keep, eager to see the new Lord of the Seven Kingdoms.

Jon stood proud and tall on the saddle, powerful whiskers, and a wide smile both in his lips and his eyes, filled with joy and pride. Behind him, Denys and Vardys, holding the banners of Arryn and Baratheon, both fluttering in the wind. Victory at last.

When Robert saw Arryn, all he was able to give him was a weak smile. His foster father did his job and had arrived in the capital - even though the Stormlord knew that another person has taken it before him. Tired as he was he cheered only slightly into the crowd. Even though he didn't wore his armour and instead his court clothes, the Baratheon had shouldered his warhammer on his right hand. Robert wanted to remind the people and especially the High Lords, that he had taken the throne mainly by his hammer and not only because of blood ties and political alliances.
Sadly the war was the only thing I was good at, he thought, still with sorrow minds about Lyanna, I can only hope she will return soon.

    "My lord"
, he greeted his foster father friendly, when he approached him, drawing the sad thoughts finally aside for a moment, "I see you and your men did good work as always. But before we speak further - where are Lord Lannister and Lord Tyrell? I wrote already a letter to Highgarden and assume that the Roses will send their representatives soon, but where is the man, who finally freed us from Aerys?"
He actually wondered about Lord Lucion, as he had only heard that he was before the Lord Hand of Aerys before he resigned and retreated to the Westerlands - an unexpected ally, which Robert couldn't estimate.

    Lord Arryn laughed, joyfully:

"Your Grace, I did your bidding as good as I could"

He turns to face a page, his ward, Creighton Redfort, who handed him, in a purple cushion, a golden key. He then hands it with solemnity to the new king.

"Now, my Lord and King, Robert, the First of His Name, of the House Baratheon, my foster son, I handle you the key of the Keep and the City. The Capital is yours"

    Lord Jon then replies Robert:

"My liege, Lord Luceon Lannister waits you nearby (ooc: depends on Lucius, let's say he waits you near Baelor's, halfway to the Keep?), let's ride to your new home"

He gestured and a thousand trumpets started to sound in triumph and victory. Three thousand soldiers raised their banners, black stags on gold, all the way to the Keep, which was lined by soldiers and knights clad in fine armor and splendid surcoats, their spears decorated with flowers. In few places chores of singing girls and boys were placed, singing the glories of the new regime. Jon had done his best to do a proper triumphal entry for the new king, and triumphal decorations had been swiftly erected and placed around the city, including a statue of a stag trampling a dragon, and other showing the spoils of war, as the captured banners. To assure the King a warm welcoming Jon had showered the crowd with thousands of silver stags and public banquets would be held after the King entered the Keep, were a more fabulous feast will take place.

Sighing, Robert followed Arryn after he took the key. It was indeed a glorious moment, the moment of victory.
Sure, as he passed the crowds it was a fantastic feeling to imagine that all those people do celebrate him, Robert Baratheon, their future king. It was as well the moment, of which Jon has spoken at the Eyrie, when they have declared Robert as the leader figure of the rebellion. The man, who would be able to reunite the realm after Aerys' death.
Everything seemed perfect, even after a bloody sack.
    And still,
it was not the moment, Robert had always imagined in his dreams. Upon which he had hoped for.
Without Lyanna even the glorious march towards the keep felt empty and cold.

Being followed by Lord Barristan and his retiniue a smiling Robert Baratheon rode towards the Red keep. But it was more the smile of a man, who pretended to be glad rather than a real victorious smile.

Gregor and his men stood outside the Keep with the other notables of the Westerlands. Sandor was approaching the Keep from the road leading from the Flea Bottom side with Gareth. Gregor cast a dark look at his brother and then looked away. The King approached a scene of battle, as it were, and not a scene of drunken debauchery that had been taking place several minutes prior to his arrival.

Lucion Lannister waited with the notables of the Westerlands and his soldiers. The Lannister had noticed Lord Arryn leave when the news of Lord Baratheon's arrival, a loyal dog, but an old one. He calmly keeps his hand upon the hilt of his blade as Lucion awaits the arrival of Lord Baratheon. He glances for a moment to make sure everyone was in position. Ormond was among them since the throne room was being cleaned. The Kingsguard remained by his father as they waited for the Baratheon host.

Seeing the Lord Paramount of the Westerlands, when he entered the hall, bringing Ser Barristan and few soldiers of his retiniue with him, Robert approached slowly the Iron Throne, being impressed by it's size.
He nearly shuddered when remembering that two Starks left their life by a cruel murder in exactly this hall, even though Aerys and his henchmen were dead. It even seemed as if the dead dragon skulls would look down upon him, as if they would threaten him for the slaying of the Prince.
Nevertheless, he stayed confident as he approached Lord Lannister, being more than interested in the man.
"Mylord", he said, bowing slightly his head, even though he was aware that he was still supported as a king by his former allies, "I have so far heard about your success on my way towards the capital. My congratulations upon your hard achieved victory - House Baratheon is indeed in your debt for your decision. Justice has finally been spoken upon House Targaryen by the Lion of the West."

Lorch stood amongst the notables of the Westermen, he wasn't a lord or some such but he was sworn to Lucion and he had led a goodly portion of the assault. His armor was freshly polished, his raven ringlets trimmed and pulled back from his face, and he patiently awaited the new King's arrival as all the rest.

Lord Lucion had followed the entourage into the throne room and remained standing nearby as Lord Baratheon came towards the Iron Throne. Then, as a Lion should feel, pride swelled within him for a moment as Robert recognized the achievements of House Lannister and the Westerlands. Lord Lannister bowed to Robert.

I only commanded the soldiers, My Lord-....Your Grace. My eldest son, Ser Ormond, was the one who struck down Aerys II before he carried out a scheme that would have turned King's Landing to ruins from the effects of a great wildfire trap. The deaths of Elia and the children however have no culprit. Lord Arryn suggested that I find the culprits who murdered the children and raped Elia Martell which is currently underway by my captains.

Lord Lannister then glanced around him and approached the Baratheon. Lucion leans in to whisper quietly.

We have not confirmed the whereabouts of the late King's wife, Rhaelle nor the second son, Viserys Targaryen. Parties are still searching King's Landing for any clues. I doubt they would remain in Westeros with their allies all but destroyed by you and your followers, Your Grace.

Robert smiled politely towards Ser Ormond, when Lord Lucion told him about the achievements of the Kingsguard member. He would talk later with him due to his valuable deed, even though he broke his oath - in some ways the fate of the boy were similiar to the ones of the current king. The Stormlord could imagine that it was probably a grave decision for Lannister's son to choose between the loyality of Aerys and his own family inside the capital. Ser Barristan probably would have died with his king, when he thought about it...
He nodded also when he heard Lucion's words. Living Targaryens would not only be a reminder for him upon Rhaegar's deeds, but as well endanger his life and the life of those, who succeeds him.
"We will take care about this later, mylord, when I can speak in private with you", he only added with lowered voice, "But don't worry, I won't tolerate any resistance who would oppose us or your family."
With those words being said, he continiued in a louder voice, understandable for everyone in the hall.
"My congratulations upon your son's deed, who shall not be judged by me, but rather expect my benevolence for saving not only thousands of lives, but bringing down the murderers of Lord Stark and his eldest son in this hall", he said friendly as he looked towards Ormond, "If he wishes, he shall remain a member of the Kingsguard, but I can understand it, if he chooses to return to Casterlyrock and lay down the White coat due to personal reasons. In any case he shall be remembered as a great knight, who did the realm a favor by bringing down the tyrant king."

    Lord Jon frowned.

He had broken his bows, the utmost duty of a knight. He could kill another King with ease. The Kingsguard was the ivory wall raised to protect the King, but if the wall had holes or a centinel was or dubious loyalty the King could be easily endagered. Jon knew Selmy would have rather died that breaking his bows, or killed himself if had to. Lannisters had little honor, Jon knows that.

And there is little higher than honor for an Arryn.

Lucion felt a sneering coming on and the urge to show it to Lord Arryn. But the Lannister resisted this display. Lord Arryn had been hard on the Lannisters for their deeds, but this new King, Robert Baratheon, heaped praises upon them. Lucion stepped back and looked to his son, Ormond. Ser Ormond felt his father's gaze and suspected that he would want him back at Casterly Rock. The Kingsguard Ser looks to his father before approaching Robert Baratheon. The young man fell on one knee and bowed his head.

I pledge my sword to you, Robert of the House Baratheon, as my king and sovereign, who will I serve diligently and without delay.

Lucion sighed quietly, suspecting his son would do this. His eyes glanced at the young Gareth who was near Sandor Clegane. He would have to make sure Gareth would become greater than the plans he had for Ormond. The Lannister watches his son who remains on one knee before the soon-to-be King.

With a fond smile, the Stormlord looked down on the Lannister knight, who knelt in front of him.
"Then, Ser Ormond Lannister, I accept your oath as a Sworn Brother of the Kingsguard and will forgive you.", he said warm, "Raise with proud, as I promise you to not repeat the failures and madnesses of Aerys II., the last King in the line of House Targaryen."
He then looked expecting towards his foster father, actually not sure what he thought of the situation. Jon always was a man of honor, as he knew and taught him the values of a knight, but on the other side Robert couldn't question Lannister's success in this rebellion as bringing it to an end. Lord Lucion was a strong ally in times like these and since Robert was chosen to be the leader figure of the rebellion, he didn't want to appear like a puppet of House Arryn, even though he owed Jon a lot.
"Before I will decide about what to do next upon the royal court and the administration, we should focus on the current situation, mylords", he then continiued, eyeing especially Arryn, "Did messages arrive about Lady Lyanna's rescue? And even further, what to make out of the Iron Islands and their raids during the war? Rumors have reached me that all western coasts, from the North till the Reach have suffered under the Greyjoy's last organized campaign - damages have been caused by the Ironborn, which I estimate as gravely as the Dornish campaign upon the Stormlands. Even though I promise mercy towards those, who opposed our rebellion, but joined us in the hour of the Targaryen's near extinction my mercy is not endless."
He looked now in the round.
    "Proposals, mylords?"

Lord Lucion did not even glance as he stepped out to speak a proposal that quickly came to mind. It was best to keep up with the momentum granted to him and to garner more favor for House Lannister and its future.

Your Grace, I would suggest we offer peaces to the Reach and Dorne that do not hurt their pride, but instead, foster future good relations between your house and theirs. A realm divided cannot stand as proven during this civil war. Secondly, offer a general amnesty to the Crownland lords who followed the late King, Aerys II, into battle. They must know that you hold no hatred nor ill intentions towards them.

Aerys dead, Elia dead, the little Prince and Princess dead as well. Of course he had heard rumors, but to know it true was all too much. He'd liked Elia well enough, beautiful and fair, and the little ones they'd done nothing, they were just innocent victims in all this chaos. Now they would need to be buried he knew, with Rhaegar, with whatever honors he could give them.

Ser Barristan looked toward Ormond, a look not of hate or disgust but of disappointment, he was a sworn brother of the Kingsguard.. his brother, and he'd profaned his blade with the blood of the King he was sworn to defend. A Kingslayer shouldn't be rewarded, but prisoner or Kingsguard it was not his place to speak against Robert's actions.

"Grant a royal pardon to those that followed the Mad King, my liege. But Dorne will be difficult to pacify, as the Princess was butchered during the sack. That is a potential blood feud, we have... still... to find the culprits. Your grace will likely will need a full diplomatic mission to Dorne to please Prince Rors. Tyrell could be convinced to plead allegiance easier, maybe with an offer of marriage between his house and one of those loyal to you, my King"

The Lefford family were among the gathered Westermen at the Red Keep's entrance. Harmund, his knights still guarding the Great Sept of Baelor, and Raymar, stony faced and disinterested looking, stood along with Ser Ulfric, Lords Pendric and Nunn, and a few of the higher-stature landed knights that owed Goldentooth fealty.

Close enough to overhear the brief exchange between the new King and Lords Lannister and Arryn, but naturally not intruding on the discussion, the two men stood and listened. No Rivermen or Northmen had shown up yet, Harmund wondered if they would at all.

Both, too, had noticed Arryn running around the city like he had been the one to seize it for Robert. Doubtless Lucion had noticed this arrogance, and doubtless had noted it well: that same arrogance that took him nearly to sit his arse on the Iron Throne himself when he arrived the morning after the initial sacking. He may prove too ambitious for this young new King to prevail over: perhaps this was the dawning of another Hand that rules the King, as had happened before in the realm's history.

The King nodded about both lord's proposals.
"Indeed", he said with a look towards Arryn, "I considered already a marriage of House Tyrell into House Baratheon. I will discuss those plans with Lord Tyrell, when he arrives - in the meantime, we might obtain probably informations about the Red mountains as well. According to Ser Barristan Selmy, about whom's fate I haven't decided now, Lady Lyanna has been hidden there.
With Dorne subjugated I will think about pleasing the Martells. They should be aware that it was never a good decision to allow the princess to live in a city with a pyro-addicted, mad step-father, though they shall know that I feel sorry for the fate of Lady Elia. Rape is still a crime, even in times of war and we will of course search for the culprits. I trust Lord Lucion in this task, since he knows his kinsmen and a Westerlander, responsible for this deed should be judged by his own Lord Paramount. If it would have been a Stormlord in the same situation and I would knew about it, I would do the same in the situation - one thing on which I agree with my brother Stannis."

Nevertheless, Robert wasn't all too fond of the Dornish, since he knew that they raided his own lordship and even dared to put his keep under siege. At least he could assume, that Stannis would punish the surviving Dornishmen in a fair way, after Lord Estermont and Renly brought them down - and for this one time he wouldn't even mind it if those punishments would be bloody. Martell should learn that it was never wise to underestimate the descendants of Argillac the Stormking.
"So, the Iron Islands are left", he said then after a while, "If the raids won't stop, I already would suggest to gather a combined fleet and convince Lord Greyjoy by the strength of the united realm to stop his activities and bow towards my reign. The western coast have suffered enough from the pillaging of the Ironborn."
