Schools in Vancouver are reportedly doing away with the words 'he' and 'she' and using a new gender neutral word - 'xe' - instead.

The Canadian city's school board approved the new policy allowing pupils to be referred to as 'xe', 'xem' and 'xyr' instead of 'he/she', 'him/her', and 'his/hers'.

Children will also be able to choose which toilet facilities to use, including a mandatory unisex option.

"We're standing up for kids and making our schools safer and more inclusive," board member Mike Lombardi told the Vancouver Sun.

Parents who question the changes argue that six-year-olds aren't qualified to understand identity issues.

I thought it was a little silly but your comment is just out there. Plastic bags are not good for the environment. I went to wal-mart and bought a few things and the lady packs like 5-8 things into 4 separate bags.

You think this represents all of Canada? This is literally a single school board in Vancouver, which is the San Francisco of Canada. If something this ing stupid happened where I live you can guarantee the militant hicks would raise the militia

Seems kind of silly and forced.

Compare where I grew up in Michigan 'You Guys' was just the general way to address a mixed gender group of friends as in 'Since I am driving and its my car and I had to stay sober - one of you guys is going get out pump gas because it is 20 degrees below zero (F none of that sissy Celsius crap)' I never that said w/o the expectation that was addressing everyone and gender in the car.

On balance language and culture tends to develop from the bottom up not top down - I'm not sure who this helps or supposed to help.

You know I don't mind efforts to make them disintegrate faster when they become wind blown trash or in a land fill, but simple bans are annoying since I use as free holders for used cat litter, and any number of other things.

What all can I say mate every place has its costs and the Left Coast all its own unique ones. Move ID - I had to and then inherited a 30-30 lever action gun from my father in law. Who get's helped? Who gets hurt is teachers struggling to teach and now having to remember a made up word that only maybe one student might want - if any I mean really? And than face discipline fore making a mistake. I really do appreciate the the difficulties of the issues a transgender child could and would face. Having a unisex bathroom seems easy enough whit a bolt. Seeing as in the US at least showers are kind of a thing of the past that is not an issue (hell even PE is dying and swimming even more). It seem to me A teacher not overwhelmed with 35 or 40 kids and parents that care could likely work out a fairly easily solution in they try refer to the student by name or as the my student, the student, your child etc.

But in any case WTF:

So you agree it's harmless since at best it doesn't do anything at all? We pass useless policies all the time, if that school district wants to try that let them. It either proves to be worthless, will get revoked or none bothers about it in a year anyway.

It's basically just a massive waste of the teachers and children time. As soon as they leave this one school to further education/real world/whatever or indeed in the actual real world when they get out or at weekends, they'll be right back to dealing with 'He' and 'She' and all manner of things gender related.
