With the recent uprisings in Westeros, House Lefford summoned their forces to stand guard in the mountain pass that is their domain to ensure no enemy force would have easy access into the Westerlands proper. Around three thousand men were within the castle proper, the rest camped behind the great walls that spanned the length of the valley. Goldentooth's greatest advantage lay in this wall: entirely surrounding the fortress was almost impossible, forcing either a costly assault or a significant southern or northern detour through another valley.
"I have posted light cavalry forces forward of our position, at Nunn's Deep," said Harmund to a small council of his sons, a grandson, and the Lords Nunn and Pendric, "They will keep watch on the road to Riverrun, the likely path of advance of any force that would seek to force this valley."
"What of our holdfasts there?" asked Lord Pendric, worried that his lands lay in front of Goldentooth's defences.
"Unless Lord Lannister gives us substantial reinforcements we could not see to their safety," said Harmund, "Though any invasion of the Westerlands will be aimed at swiftly reaching Casterly Rock, hoping to knock us out of the fight before we can marshal. Seizing either Nunn's Deep or the Pendric Hills would only alert the Rock to hostile intent and give us time to call up our forces: it's unlikely your holdings will be seized as a result."
The two Lords nodded their assent: the reasoning was sound, they supposed.
"Raymar. You will take command of the men in the valley, behind the fortress," said Harmund, "You will move up to the valley wall if it is menaced and send riders west to inform the Rock if we're attacked."
Raymar nodded silently.
"Godric, I have an important mission for you," said Harmund, "Take a few dozen mounted men and range into the Riverlands. Find out what is happening and feed us information. Take care, however, as being neutral means not only are you no one's immediate enemy, but none have cause to call you friend."
"I'll depart at once," said Godric, glad he was getting a chance to go on a journey with a purpose. He left the tent as the various people there bid him good luck and fast riding.
"I will command the defence of the citadel," said Harmund, "Lord Pendric shall command the valley wall and Lord Nunn the curtain walls of the fortress."
The two Lords nodded their agreement, content with their positions at the first layer of Goldentooth's defensive establishment. The Council broke up as the men went to their various new positions to establish themselves and take stock of the resources they had. Six thousand men probably wouldn't stop an army of twenty thousand or more from forcing the valley, but many would die in the attempt and the armies of the Westerlands would be waiting at the Rock by the time Goldentooth had been overcome and the road to the Rock followed to its end.
