Maric sat in the Great Hall of Winterfell reviewing the men he'd been left with. Just shy of two and a half thousand, with instructions left for more. He'd ordered a militia formed in Winterfell, and had received word from the Dreadfort's Castellan that a militia was being formed there, too. The Karstarks, Reeds and Manderleys had ignored the instructions and made no allowances for militias to be raised in their own territories, robbing the North of over half the additional troops for home defence that it was expecting: some two thousand were being raised out of the five thousand that Lord Stark had issued instructions for, leaving the North with only four and a half thousand men instead of the seven and a half intended. Simple instructions...

He called over a scribe and dictated messages to White Harbour, Karhold and Greywater Watch restating the instruction, reminding them Lord Stark had issued it and that troops were sorely needed to form a reserve and to defend the homeland against potential invaders.

Surveying the map of the North the threats were as obvious as they were remote: the Twins had four hundred men as a garrison and were fearsome towers, the Westerlands was unlikely to force those straits, and the Ironborn lacked the numbers to be anything but troublesome should they side with the King. Places like the Shield Isles presented far wealthier targets if they decided to use the war as a looting spree, anyway.

OOC: Woah Lord Reed left 1000 men to defence and bought 300 extra for the offence, and bought City Watch Quarters in Greywater which bottlenecks the south/north. That is more than what a militia rally could give. Is that counted as ignoring the Lord Stark?

More men are needed to form a defensive host of suitable size, in order to form a deterrent against those might consider our homes a target and to form a sword with which to strike at any who disturb the peace in the North.

To Meric Stark, My Father, Howland Reed, Guardian of the Neck have done as our Lord commanded, and made sure there's able men to protect our homeland, One thousand men have been assigned from our forces to the neck, five-hundred to mobile defence, five-hundred to the defence of Moat Cailin, and just before he left for Winterfel he ordered the construction of a great expansion to the Barracks in our ancestral castle Greywater Watch which will be manned by the end of the year. This will raise the defensive contribution from The Neck to One-thousand and four-hundred men.. The rebuilding of Moat Cailin, the other expansion of our defences in the neck, the new barracks included are a part of mounting the defence of the north as commanded. We have also, in loyal zeal, went further and equipped three-hundred elite horsemen from The Neck to the war effort in the south, all this have taken it's toll on our resources for now. As our new orders from the new Lord Stark first came after our resources had been allocated it had to be pushed till next year..

I do not know the progress of White Harbour my Lord.

Meera Reed.(With help from the Castellan).

Maric threw all three letters into the fire: only Lord Bolton had followed the instructions, leaving the troops at home near three thousand men weaker than they should be. Worse, the little whelp Meera Reed had attempted to send orders to the troops in Winterfell left by the Reeds ordering them to move to Moat Cailin, despite their station under Maric, something that was resolved by forcefully reminding the Captain that he had been ordered by both Reed and Stark to serve in the host he was presently in. Swamp-dwelling upstarts, the lot.

The troops at Winterfell remained there until the situation became clearer, as they lacked the strength to be parceled off piecemeal into half a dozen holdfasts due to the failures of Houses Reed, Karstark and Manderly.

Precious little news came from the south, either. Maric had told his sons to keep him abreast of developments, to which they too had seemingly failed. Surrounded by idiots, utterly surrounded...

The swamp people had finally sent Maric troops, bulking his force to above 5,000 and giving him, perhaps, the strength he needed to finally march west and resolve the Ironborn raiding that was plaguing the north-western shores. House Glover had recently sent word that they had been attacked in the night, the countryside around Deepwood Motte being pillaged, while the fishing villages of Bear Isle had reported being assaulted before that. With so few troops, Maric had to sit powerless, but no longer.

The army left Winterfell, marching through the woods to Deepwood Motte where the task of ascertaining the next possible attack location would commence. They were not seizing holdfasts, which was at least good news, but pillaging of the North could not go unpunished. Final letters were sent to Karhold and White Harbour once again reminding them of their duty while the troops available marched westwards.

Maric hoped the rebels won: it would be only fitting that the Ironborn be made pay for the damage they have inflicted.

Under control of Poach as-well. Scraping together ships against water raids seems sensible.

Young Meera Reed sends raven with words that ships would soon be a resource he could draw on from the Neck aswell.
