Marq Estermont frowned as he neared the castle, still trying to understand why he had been sent. I am only a Caron by law. However, Lord Jon had seen fit to name him as envoy. Marq's mother had insisted that he accept the supposed honour. I will offer the Caron's terms to these Valemen and then return to see some of the fighting.
Once he reached the castle, Marq requested an audience.
"The nightingale of Caron is an uncommon sight in these mountains, ser," a middle-aged and bearded knight said solemnly as he and seven other guardsmen rode out the gates of the Redfort, the banners of the red castle blowing in the wind. He was of average height, although he seemed to tower over everyone on his black stallion, a fine breed from the Rills, and had blue eyes and brown hair. The knight was clad in ringmail and coat-of-plates, a surcoat depicting the sigil of his house over it - a crowned flame red hawk with a bronze spear through his heart on dark green. "I am Ser Edmure of House Hawkwood, by Lord Horton's command the castellan of the Redfort. May I have your names?"
"I am Marq Estermont, firstborn son of Lady Merianne Dondarrion and the now deceased Ser Festor Estermont. This is Ser William of the Redberry Peaks. This Gawen Straightbreech. Jaime of the Forest mists. Ser Yoren Goldlust."
The four men stepped forward and bowed their heads at Ser Edmure, their senior in both age and rank. All were younger than twenty, with the same straw-like brown hair and long features. If not for their varying sigils, they could have been brothers.
"I come in the name of my father-in-law, Lord Jon Caron. He wishes to build bridges between we nobles who are tired of the reign of the dragons. However, he knows that such bridges cannot be forged overnight, so he has this to offer: a trade of Vale stone for Stormland steel. The wealth from such a transaction would allow not only the houses we serve to benefit, but also we who serve."
Marq produced a letter, sealed with the imprint of a nightingale in yellow wax.
"Here is the details of such a trade."
Marq waited for the letter to leave his fingers before continuing.
"I also wish to offer the services of me and my four companions to your command, until such times as we can safely charter a path back to the Stormlands."
"Hmm, interesting..." Ser Edmure mused thoughtfully as the portcullis was raised and they rode into the Redfort. "Armour... yes... it would help us outfit our banners..." The party left their horses by the stables and walked up a wide ramp carved into the mountain, which led to the level above and the keep. The great hall was packed with people, from humble washerwomen and guardsmen to the young and small Lady Redfort with the girl Rowena and the boy Jon seated by the high table, but they paid them no more mind than they did to their food. Instead, Ser Edmure quickly led them to the castellan's solar, with a fascinating look to the Red Valley below them.
"Please, make yourselves comfortable," he bid them as he took his seat behind the desk and servants brought the newly arrived wine and bread, extending them the guest right.
"Now, Lord Caron's proposal is certainly interesting, but House Redfort has little need for armour, now that the banners have already been raised and Lord Horton rides to war." He paused to take a sip at his wine and folded the letter back into its envelope. "However, Lord Caron is right when he says this trade would bring much needed gold to our treasuries. Wars, after all, are an expensive affair. I could broker this agreement and offer you the stone for your bridge, in exchange for your suits of armour, but this deal would only run for the remainder of the war, until the Mad King is dethroned and Robert Baratheon sits the Iron Throne." He played with his quill.
"Mayhaps, but for now Lord Caron will have his stone to build his bridge," Ser Edmure said and smiled at the young knight, rubbing his temples as he did so.
"Now, about your offer of temporarily pledging your swords to House Redfort, I am utmost honoured by it, good sers. However, I have little need for more swords in the Redfort, but Lord Horton could use more fighting men standing by his side in the war. If you wish, you can join him at Ruthermont with Lord Royce's host, but the hospitality of the Redfort is yours whatever you decision is."
Marq accepted the castellan's words with good graces. Why pay and feed four men who will be doing nothing?
"We shall make our way to Lord Redfort's host with all haste," the young man promised, gesturing for his men to men, minus the now long-gone Jaime, to ride to war.
The young knights had already near-left the castle by the time the castellan spoke, and decided to appear ignorant to his words. The call of war was on them.
Meanwhile, young Jon looked disappointed to see the knights leave. Visitors were rare, especially amazing hedge knights that could spar with him in the courtyard. If only Creighton was here...
