Default Harrenhal, Seat of House Whent

The Castle of Harrenhal, Seat of House Whent of the God's Eye

Harrenhal was the seat of Harren the Black of House Hoare, an Ironborn house which ruled the Riverlands and the Iron Islands before Aegon the Conquerer arrived in Westeros. Harren the Black was an arrogant, vain man who wanted a living testament to his greatness as a ruler, so he constructed the terrible Grey castle of Harrenhal on the Gods' Eye. It took four decades and terrible casualties of the Thralls he forced to build it, but Harren finally completed his monument to himself...on the same day that Aegon the Conquerer landed on the Blackwater. Harren was so assured of his castle that he took refuge when Aegon came with his dragons...but he forgot that castle walls do not stop a dragon. Harren and his sons burnt in the castle, and much of it was deformed and turned to melted rock. The immense castle was then given to the Qoherys, but they died out. So it was given to the Strongs...but they died out. And so on in that fashion, for the curse of Harrenhal is that any house that takes the massive fortress is doomed to death.

Now House Whent owns Harrenhal. It remains to be seen if the curse will apply to them, or if they too will succumb in time, becoming one more victim of Harren's tormented ghost.

    House Whent Description

House Whent are the current House that holds Harrenhal. Gaining it after the death of the last of the Lothstons in rebellion against the Iron Throne, the Whents have always been staunchly loyal to Riverrun, which has sometimes been in short supply in the Riverlands. An influential and well-placed house, House Whent has ties with the Freys, Mootons, Tullys, and even the Kingsguard through the brother of Lord Whent, Ser Oswell Whent. With three sons and a daughter, Lord Whent seems impervious to the Curse of Harrenhal, but his father was crippled by it and his mother died because of it. It remains to be seen whether he can survive it, and if not, whether his son Jonothor is ready to take up command at just four and ten.

    Lord Haegon Whent

    Age: 36 (born 246)
    Rank(s): Lord
Marital Status: Wed to Selyse Frey
Children: Jonothor (13), Shella (10), Patrek (7) and Samwell (3)
    Skill(s):
A Frugal Man (+1 Wealth): Haegon Whent has never been a man to toss out huge sums for this or that. He is a careful collector of coin, but neither is a he a miser; he spent an inordinate amount on Harrenhal. Despite this, he did not do it to excess and has always made a point of being careful with his finances.
Hunter-Rider-Soldier-General (+3 Battles): The Lord Whent is a traditional man, and few things are more traditional than the martial pursuit, the thrill of the hunt, and so on in that fashion. However, this is not to say the Lord is a fancier of thrills; he does what he does because he must, and one of the things a lord must understand is to be a general. He is skillful on the field of battle, preferring the micromanagement and organization of troops in a fight but staying away from combat itself.
Not a Lord but a Gentleman (+2 Charisma): A bushy beard and an amiable face go a long way towards making a man seem to be kind and honest, and the jovial demeanor of the Lord Whent helps greatly in this. A learned mummer, to all his friends and allies he seems a dependable man who can attract many to his cause.
Bane of Harrenhal (+3 Survival): Four times the castle has tried to kill him and four times it has failed, though the last nearly smashed his head in. Convinced of the curse, the Lord Whent has learnt to watch his step around the abode of Harren the Black.

Haegon Whent was born to the large and ambitious family of the Whents. Growing up the eldest son among his family was an interesting experience and Haegon always attempted to use that to his advantage, asserting his authority over his older sister, younger sister, and younger brother Oswell. Haegon was a forceful and extroverted child, cultivating friends among the nearby houses whilst excelling at his studies with his father. When he tripped and fell down several stairways in Harrenhal, Haegon became convinced of the curse, especially with the goading on of his superstitious and religious older sister Minisa. He became more careful, cautious, and learnt to measure his words. Haegon also participated in the War of the Ninepenny Kings, where he earned his knighthood under the walls of Tyrosh. His crippled father passed away some time before Haegon's 16th nameday, making him lord of Harrenhal.

The new lord seemed a perfect one; he was kind to the servants, friendly to his vassals, and did all the things a lord was expected to do. Of course, in private he was a far less amiable man and his wife and children knew his cold anger could be terrifying, even if he never once struck them. Ultimately deeply paranoid of the castle and privately reserved and bitter over his estrangement from his brother when the latter joined the Kingsguard against his wishes (In Haegon's mind, he tossed the possibility of a martially skilled man at his beck and call out of the window in favor of serving a madman), Haegon holds deep personal guilt over the Tourney of Harrenhal and the kidnapping of Lyanna Stark, which he feels could have been avoided if he had not hosted the tourney.

Now, with the war started, Haegon finds himself in a terrible position; his sister, Minisa, is married to the Lord Mooton whilst his other sister, Wynafrei, is married to the brother of the Lord Tully. Ultimately, he chose his liege lord over the king, though with great difficulty and with a heavy heart. Lord Whent now has to fight against his goodbrother with his other goodbrother, as well as his actual brother. The kitchen staff whisper that the Lord Whent has nightmares of meeting his brother in battle and killing him only to see his father's face, but anyone who talks publically of the matter would very likely be another victim of the Curse of Harrenhal, though of a more human nature.

A raven arrives sealed with pink wax, depicting a flayed man:

    Lord Haegon Whent,

The war has come and the North has raised his banners, as the Riverlands and the Vale. That means that most of the trade will be disrupted or closed. However we have still necessities to satisfy, and I think your lordship has something we need. The North is not fertile and lack your well watered lands, Lord Whent, such I sent this offer of trade, your grain will be much needed to maintain our host on the march and fill our granaries during the war. In exchange of your wheat we would send furs and leather, as soon as possible.
