Allow me to introduce you to the rough and tumble world, and school of hard knocks called hardcore.![]()
Often confused with metal, hardcore actually does not belong to the same scene at all, although you can often see hardcore bands touring with thrash metal and death metal bands on the road. It's got a very distinctive style for sure, some would say a crossbreed of punk and heavy metal. However, instead of "moshing," a lot of hardcore dudes choose to "slam dance" in the mosh pit instead, which involves a lot of dangerous arm and leg flailing.
These are just my choice selections, so don't judge everything off one song; be open-minded and listen to the next if you don't like a particular one in the order that I've presented below.
Anyways, here's a sample selection for those who are not initiated into the world of hardcore, to give you an idea of what it actually sounds like, and how it differs in general from metal. Case study #1: Agnostic Front. These guys are more or less quintessential hardcore; virtually everyone in the scene knows them. If you don't, you're almost definitely not hardcore.
Next in line is Sworn Enemy. I've seen these guys live before, they were brutal, and I remember my entire body hurt for two days afterwards.
The first song is almost metal, whereas the second song - an older one - almost has a hip-hop element to it, especially in the bridge part when he starts talking about how he's from Queens, New York and you better not disrespect him or his kind or else he'll pound youring face in.
Next up, All Out War! These guys are great. I've also seen them live.
Listen to as much as the album as you want, it's a pure 1998 classic. Their new stuff is good too. Their sound is so fun and their shows are too, especially when they tour with the likes of death metal bands like Dying Fetus.
Any self-respecting thread that calls itself hardcore should have a mention of Madball in it. I've never seen them live, but I certainly regret it, although unlike say, Pantera, they're at least still around with all their members (even former ones) alive and well.
Here's 25 Ta Life in the next song, which, warning, has some cuss words if moderators are paying attention to any of this. This is a PG site after all.
Last but most certainly not least, how about the kings of hardcore? Sick of It All, who put on an amazing show despite not getting any younger!
Man, that last video always puts me in a better mood. I remember watching that on MTV2 like back in 1999. Great stuff.
