Default Medieval 2 has encountered an error and will now exit

Hello all! I have recently encountered a weird problem. I've had medieval 2 since day one and have never had any significant problems with it until this week. I've downloaded probably a dozen mods and installed all kinds of stuff before and about a week ago I was having problems with the Call of Warhammer mod so I just uninstalled all the files and reinstalled them. When I tried to play it would error out on start up with "medieval 2 has encountered an error and will now exit". So I figured it was something to do with the root medieval 2 folder. I looked all through my files to no avail and just uninstalled the med 2 files and reinstalled...nothing. Disabled UAC...nothing. Tried the renaming trick renaming the launchers exe files...nothing. I have tried every fix I could find and have had no success. I finally was fed up and deleted ALL files medieval 2 and ALL my mods and downloaded just medieval 2 alone and I just tried playing and it's still crashing on startup saying "medieval 2 total war has encountered an error and will now exit". This forum has helped me so much and any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Can you start a campaign in vanilla and each of the four Kingdoms campaigns?

Are you trying to load CoW save?

thanks for the reply irishron ive seen you before haha. i have tried to launch vanilla M2TW and kingdoms and still the same. And no sir i am not trying a CoW save. I do have tons of mods in my Kingdoms Launcher App maybe i need to delete that? Im not familiar with the launcher app and not sure if that has anything to do with it. ive uninstalled all mods but so i just have vanilla now, i havent even installed Kingdoms again yet. my launcher still shows all the mods so i dont know if the launcher app is messing with the launch or not, thanks!

    Steam version?
Did you delete both Medieval2 folders before reinstalling?
Did you clean the registry before reinstalling?
This game can be pretty anal at times.

It is steam, I deleted the files in steam/steamapps/common/M2tw and the m2tw files in the SEGA folder as well. Not sure how to clear the registry, thanks!

For registry cleaner, Ccleaner is recommened by many.
I prefer Eusing Free Registry Cleaner.
Push come shove, I'll use regedit but back up my registry first.

So use Free Registry Cleaner, delete the folders and reinstall? And you mentioned 2 m2tw folders before was that the SEGA folder and the one in steam/steamapps/common/m2tw?

Also I had this kind of thing happen before but It was from me downloading a mod folder into the wrong spot and fudging up launchers but I would always just delete on my steam reinstall and problem was solved so I appreciate all the help because I've never had this problem.

The second folder is hidden in users\username\appdata\roaming\the creative assembly or close to it.

You have to unhide all files, folders, and drives in Folder Options to get there and be logged in as Administrator to do it.

to be sure i will delete all files from my pc again, steam\steamapps\common\m2tw and in the SEGA folder, then delete the hidden files in users\username\appdata\roaming\the creative assembly and then use the registry cleaner and hopefully can figure out how to do that (im guessing if i delete the files for the actual game it will pick those up as bad files or unused and delete them.) and try to reinstall vanilla m2tw. I really hope it works, this is my favorite game of all time. thanks!

Left click roaming. Left click virtual store.
Which version of Windows? I'm thinking Win 7. Possibly Vista.
Win 8, try Documents and Settings, too.

I will try that next, also I tried to install a registry cleaner both Eusing and Ccleaner and ran both but it doesn't pop the installer up, nothing happens after the download is over and I can't find it in my files I have no idea why. I ran a virus scan and it popped up one in program files 86 path so I don't know if that has something to do with it. I cleaned that virus up and the register cleaners still do nothing when there finished downloading. I guess I'll try again to find the hidden files but so far I can't download any register cleaners I think it's a PC problem outside of the game files...not too sure thanks for the info I'll try to find those files keep you all posted

    Delete the clienregistry.blob.
    Restart Steam.
    Restart your computer.
Log out of Steam, go to www.steampowered.com, before logging in install Steam client, log in.

    Hopefully one of these work.
