Default The Arbor, seat of House Redwyne

    Description

The Arbor is the largest island of the chain of islands that make up the Southern Islands of the Reach located near the Redwyne Straits separating the islands from the mainland. The Mermaid's Palace and Stonecrab Cay are the second largest islands followed by the Isle of Pigs and Horseshoe Rock. The Bastard's Cradle is more of a rock formation than island, and the other few islands in the Arbor Islands are small fishing village islands with only a few dozen people as inhabitants that are irrelevant on any scale.

The Arbor's landscape is mostly open fields filled with vineyards producing the internationally renowned wines of the island, a few farms, and the estates of the vintner nobility of the island near their vineyards. Some patches of forest, rolling hills, and in the northern section a few mountains are present as well. A river flows from the northern mountains, then divided into two flowing into Tisbury before going west to empty into the ocean near Vinetown, the other winding down the entire island to meet the ocean near Starfish Harbor. The surrounding islands are more forested due to the lower populations on them, and in the case of the Isle of Pigs, nearly completely untouched besides a lighthouse and dilapidated watchtower.

The three largest settlements of the Arbor are Ryamsport, Starfish Harbor, and Vinetown. Ryamsport, the unofficial capital of the island due to it's proximity to the Redwyne's estate and manse overlooking the city from a nearby hill is the largest of the three, similar to Duskendale in size. It's harbor is divided evenly between military and commercial sections, it has the island's main septry, a small stone wall ringing the perimeter with stronger defenses near the harbor. A statue of Ser Ryam Redwyne is located in the center of the Market Square.Ryamsport is the northernmost of the three major settlements. In 286 AL, a section of the coastal districts' shipyards were converted into the Ryamsport Arsenal, a complex of Redwyne-owned and maintained shipyards and armories dedicated to creating ships for the Redwyne Armada or mercantile fleets that sail from the Arbor across the world.

Tisbury is located several miles to the southwest of Ryamsport, a smaller town divided into two sections by the river that flows through it. A small motte and bailey serves as the main defense of the settlement and residence of the Knight-Commander of Tisbury. Dotted around the island are small fishing or farming villages, and in the far north of the island, a small fishing town named Harrenport that was a major Ironborn military settlement during their control of the Arbor that has a ruined shrine to the Drowned God located there. The residents of Harrenport are known to play the finger game and appearance wise look more like a cross between Reachmen and Ironborn as some likely have ancestry from the reavers who occupied the island. Goldport is located on the western coast of the island, one of the few ports built over there due to the majority of trade coming through the Redwyne straits on the eastern side of the island. Like Vinetown, it is a primarily commercial port with a few warships docked in it for defense that was once the Merchant Guild's headquarters but a trade war between the Vinetown and Goldport merchants resulted in a shift of power to the eastern town. It was named for it's export of primarily Arbor Gold, which was the primary vintage of wine grown by the nearby vineyards.

The Violet Manse overlooking Ryamsport is the Redwyne's personal fortified manse with a small stone wall surrounding the mansion with several towers, although it primarily appears as an opulent merchant prince's estate over a fortified castle. Several acres of vineyards surround the estate and it has a private dock located nearby for the personal ships of the Redwynes or those in their employ, such as the Arbor Queen or merchant ships. Inside the mansion is decorated rather ornately with Essosi products mixed with some Westerosi and artwork. A fountain with a statue that poured wine into the fountain below was present in the past, but after a more conservative Lord Redwyne it was removed and replaced with a standard fountain. There are three wings of the mansion off the main buildings. One is used exclusively by the Redwynes, another is the guest quarters, and the third is the servant's quarters.

Starfish Harbor is the southernmost of the cities, located on the southern tip of the Arbor, and is the smallest of the three settlements due to it serving primarily as a military port with little commercial trade coming into the harbor. The majority of the Redwyne Armada's ships are docked here while the larger ships and the flagships of the Redwynes are located at Ryamsport. The Starfish Fort overlooks the city harbor, a castle built several hundred years ago to defend the harbor with artillery and connected to the stone wall surrounding the city around 205 AL to finish the fortification. Some of the Arbor's finest shipbuilders are located here, building ships not only for the Redwynes but anyone who contracts them, from local merchants to foreign princes desiring warships. Vinetown is the opposite of Starfish Harbor, a primarily commercial city located in the central coast of the island in between the political and military centers. Home to the Arbor Merchant Guild's guildhall along with multiple inns, brothels, and taverns near the harbor, Vinetown receives the greatest amount of travelers and hosts the largest market square in the Arbor where numerous vintners, farmers, and other tradesman hark their wares to travelers.

The Isle of Pigs is a desolate place inhabited by a few guardsmen who man the lighthouse and watchtower. Other than that, the only inhabitants are mainly swine placed there in the past by some unknown party for an unknown reason. The Isle is two miles out from Vinetown, and is visible on a clear day from the harbor. The Bastard's Cradle is rocky island with two small fishing villages on it, named so for it is where the Redwyne-Gardener fleet defeated the last Ironborn King to hold the island, nicknamed the Bastard Son of the Drowned God by some Ironborn for surviving several drownings. It is located to the north of the Arbor near Harrenport.

Mermaid's Palace is another island that has a history connected to the Ironborn occupation. It is home to several ruined shrines to the Drowned God, and in the Goldwyne's castle, they have a tapestry dating back to the Ironborn control of the island depicting reavers meeting mermaids on the island. The island has one settlement that has a port and serves as the Goldwyne's seat of power, and several fishing villages. The Mermaid's Palace is located slightly to the north of Ryamsport. Stonecrab Cay, the seat of House Lowther is located several miles off the coast near Starfish Harbor as the southernmost island in the chain of islands that the Arbor has lordship over. Named for it's shape like a crab and the rocky coastline around most of the island, the only settlement on the island is the Lowther's seat, a large fishing town. Horseshoe Rock is the last notable island, and like the Cradle, is more a rock formation than island. Several smaller islands are located between the islands that have a single fishing village or are uninhabited.

Ythan Bryhtnyng climbed down off his mules, rubbing his posterior vigorously. He was no rider, The Stepstones did not call for much in the way of riding, being both smaller and possessed of coastal settlements, and the short ride from Ryamsport to Vinetown had tested his horsemanship to the limit but he had business to attend to. He made his way through the large open streets of the town, it was hard to see where the town ended and the vineyards began, and made his way to a large inn where Ferrego said he might find what he sought. Entering the common room he amde his way to the bar.
"I'm looking for Syrio Volentin." He said, sliding a silver over the bar.

The barkeep looks to his left, then right, before quickly pocketing the silver. He then gestures to a table occupied by three watchmen in boiled leather and a fourth who appears to be their officer and has the sword of a water dancer instead of a spear resting against the table. As Ythan walks away from the bar, he can hear the barkeep and a fat, portly man who must be the chef arguing in bastard valyrian as the barkeep dropped the silver by accident and the chef saw it as well.

A raven for Lady Rohanne Redwyne from the Riverlands:

    - If you would but stay your hand from acting rashly, you may find King Robert a most merciful and benevolent liege in good time. If your liege should move decisively in favour of the Targaryens, one might even reason that it would become expedient to replace him with another more worthy...

One step forward and two steps back may well be the surest path to victory for House Redwyne in this conflict.

    - A friend.

Ythan makes his way over to the table. 'Ferrego told me he prefers the direct approach.' "Good evening gentlemen." He said brightly, before proceeding to completely ignore the other men. "Syrio Volentin?" He asks the water dancer. "I believe I know a cousin of yours...Ferrego Parnel?"

The sounds of a fight breaking out draw the attention of the three guardsmen, who turn to their commander. "Jorah, return to the barracks and get another five men. You two, try to break it up or at least mitigate the damage." The three guardsman nearly trip over themselves to rush off to carry out their orders, and then Syrio turns to Ythan. "That is a man's name. So you must be my cousin's associate? Do sit and help yourself to some wine."Syrio takes a sip from his mug of wine while observing the fighting, the two guardsmen having managed to remove one or two combatants for now. The barkeep and chef's insults in bastard valyrian can be heard by nearly everyone over the din of fighting.

"My thanks." Ythan says, smiling to himself as he listens to the chef's expletives rising in volume. 'Just like being back in the Stepstones.' He thought wryly as he gratefully took a cup of wine. What passed for swill here was worth an Exarch's ransom in any other place in the world.
"Ferrego sends his greetings. He told me to tell you of his surprise at your...I believe he said 'honest work'." Ythan said laughingly. "Did he tell you ought of me?"

Syrio nods, turning to watch the chef be somehow picked up by the barkeep and sent flying into a table. The barkeep however had little time to enjoy his victory as the chef's assistant smashed a bottle of Arbor Gold over his head not long after. Syrio laughs at the spectacle and Ythan's mentioning of his cousin's surprise. "A man is not surprised by that. The Stepstones and other ventures of Ferrego did not suit a man, so I came here as a retainer of the late Lord Redwyne and now I command a group of guards. He has told a man a little about you, Ythan. But enough for me to know why you have come to the Sunset Lands...to rebuild your lost fortune, correct?"

"Correct. And the way I understand it if...a man...would make his fortune in these lands, he must gain the favour of one of these Sunset Lords yes?" Ythan replies, stopping to watch as the chef staggered back to his feet cursing even more vociferously than before. "That is why I am here. I desire a meeting with your Lord Redwyne, or one of his representatives and would like you to get me one. You see, I am a merchant and trader it is true. But I have many other talents that may be of help to your Lord, and by helping I will gain favour and secure my position here on this island. Is that plain enough for you, friend Syrio?"

Syrio nods. "If a man does not wish to have the risk of local merchants petitioning for his removal, then you are correct." The door to the inn flies open as ten more guardsmen charge into the fray, one man being knocked back as a guard hits him with the butt of his spear. The chef and barkeep go back to fighting each other while the guards begin to clean up the other combatants. "If you seek my Lord Redwyne, he is in a crypt. His daughter rules as Lady Redwyne now, and a meeting is something a man can easily arrange for you..whether or not friend Ythan is seen as valuable is up to your words and the court's opinion." Syrio breaks away from the conversation for a minute. "Davos, stop harassing that...nevermind, carry her in with the others.." Syrio sits back down as the guardsman slumps to the ground, holding a part of his body a female patron just kicked before being hit over the head by another patron. "But with war on the horizon, such a meeting may have to be very soon or with a representative of the Lady."

"I agree. The sooner the better. And what, friend Syrio, would you like for arranging such a meeting?" Ythan asks bluntly, refreshed by the straightforward manner of the guard captain. "Understand, I am not trying to buy your loyalty away from where you are now, but surely you are not so generous as to arrange this meeting for nothing?"

Syrio thinks for a few minutes, watching the brawl come to a close and the inn keeper appear from upstairs partially undressed to begin arguing with the guards and his staff. "A man may ask a favor of friend Ythan sometime to come. If you succeed then I feel friend Ythan and a man may be able to develop a stronger partnership to benefit us both and the Redwynes. Would a week from now suffice for arranging the meeting, Ythan?"

"It would indeed. And you may consider me in your debt." Ythan replies. "I shall await your word at my humble trade house on the waterfront of Ryamsport. For now, I shall leave you to clean up this mess." He smiles as he rises to his feet. "It is good to have friends Syrio." He says by way of farewell and, still slightly limping from his sore rump, he skirts past the fight and out the door to reclaim his mule.

Syrio nods, and after Ythan had left the inn, gets up and walks over to the yelling innkeeper, barkeep, and chef. By the time Ythan had reclaimed his mule, he could see all three plus several of the other more notable combatants in the fight being carried off by the guards, reinforced by another patrol passing by to a barracks to spend the night in cells and in the case of the instigators, potentially facing justice for their actions.

"We are almost there my lord," Willam Dunn said. "Good, I want to speak to lord Redwyne as soon as possible," he replied as he left his cabin. He made his way to the deck. "A beautiful day it is, Willam." "Yes, my lord, a beautiful day for what hopefully will become an even more beautiful meeting." As they sail into the Arbor's port, they are being met by a ship flying the purple grape on a blue background of house Redwyne.

The ship, a war galley, ignores them and continues sailing on towards the rallying point for the fleet. Upon their arrival they are approached by ten of the Ryamsport City Watch. "Halt. What business do you have on the Arbor, sers?"

The Lannister ships is allowed to dock at Ryamsport, where two knights of the Vintner Court greet Ser Addam and lead him and his retinue through the moderately sized city's winding streets and out the northern gate to head to the Violet Manse of the Redwynes, on a road passing through two large vineyards, both owned by the Redwynes for producing the various vintages of the Arbor. Shortly after he is led through the weirdwood doors of the Manse into the Great Hall, where several relatives of the Lady Redwyne were present along with Rohanne, who gets up from the table. "Ser Lannister, welcome to the Arbor. Please sit and enjoy the food and wine if you so choose to."

"My father, Alester, sent me. We need to speak lady Rohanne," Alekyne responded. "Will we be granted passage into the city, my friends?"
"The Lady is in the harbor, ser. We shall lead you to her." A short walk from the commercial portion of the harbor past a fish market, an inn, a merchant's guildhouse, and several other buildings leads the small group from Brightwater to the military portion of the harbor, where several massive, three or four decked warships all bearing burgundy or violet sails are being loaded up with men or supplies. A woman wearing a black Braavosi-styled longcoat over a light curiass and a hat bearing several feathers from the Summer Islands is overseeing it all, and after being approached by one of the watchmen, turns to walk over to the Florents. "Welcome to the Arbor, Ser Florent. I apologize for the state the island is in due to the war, and that I will be unable to offer you a taste of some of the latest batches of any vintage the Arbor creates of your choosing. But I digress...wh yhas your lord father sent you here to the Arbor? Is it about the war?"

"Yes, my lady. Word reached the old fox's ear of an Ironborn fleet gathering to raid our lands. My uncle, Colin, wrote home that the Shields fleet was neither large nor experienced enough to face the mighty Iron Fleet. If we want to face the Ironborn, we will need more ships. Can you spare any?" Alekyne paused for a moment to let lady Rohanne speak
