Found a few online guides, but I realized that it doesn't help me in this mod.
Anybody have any general tips for someone starting off in the Roman Campaign?

Here are our general game guides: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showt...eI-Scriptorium
As far as starting campaigns in general, I always tell players to build solid diplomacy early. This may mean paying other factions with gifts, attempting to get basic treaties, etc. Building relationships early is a must on the higher difficulties. Also, resources are very important.
Others probably have much more detailed help. I just create the stuff, I don't pretend to know how to play it! ;P
This is correct. I do test, but in a limited amount compared to the experience of players who have played multiple campaigns to conclusion.
I love the Total War series (my favorite game series). The sad truth is, when you start modding it makes it very hard to enjoy a campaign. You have a hard time getting immersed when you know how the sausage is made, so to speak.
From my experience with modding, all editing takes so much time, that testing (also many hours) is being left for other people ;D

in my opinion the guides are very useful and give you much information. then you decide how you want to play![]()
Just finished a campaign with Macedon, meaning I played till I reached a point where noone is strong enough to oppose me. And from this I found what I think is a good way to use the phalanx and other Macedonian troops. Use the phalanx to lock the battle line while you use shock cav and/or sword wielding units to flank. Peltast can also be used to flank and then I use archers to harass the enemy as they approach and send them behind my phalanx and use fire arrows to lower enemy morale. And unless you move too fast with your phalanx you should win 9/10* times at least .![]()
*Depending on difficulty, other settings and personal skill.
It worked for them, it'll work for you. If only the games AI worked realistically, you could use his battle of Jaxartes plan against nomadic factions: Lure, entrap, annihilate. Unfortunately, horse archers won't reform into a line in order to meet a formation, so against them its better to just use much heavier cavalry armies.
thanks flash, iv been currently using hoplites 2 on each side of the phalanx, ill have to see about some sword inf then!
Im a vet of RTW phalanxes, its just that in R2, evrything seems a little off to say the least, and tactics i used in RTW are not as useful here. Im coming from RS2 where the hoplites had the overhand grip (im sure it was rs2? i have so many dam mods for rtw i lose track...) and was able to push enemys back and sideways if attacked in the flank, so they get grinded by the phalanx wall of death even more efficiently.
In RTW phalanxes was very OP. They were able to grind any and everything to dust in a matter of minutes. DeI have really changed that. They are not killing machines anymore but are perfect at holding the battle line in place while you flank with cav or sword wielding inf. I find hoplites inferior at flanking than cav and inferior in fixing enemy troops compared to phalanxes. But they can still be used in a tight situation.![]()
So, in your opinion, how many phalanx units should be optimal in a army, how many cav, and how many flanking swords?
Im currently using something like 1 cav companions 1 bg companions, 4 hoplites that ive used for flanking, 4 slingers/archers 3 javs and the rest pikes. so that like about 6-7 pike units.
Whats your army compostiion for makedon and is that too many pikes do you reckon?
+Rep flash, its always good finding out other peoples way of playing.
I wont say if its too many pikes. If the line up works for u then its the right amount of pikes.![]()
You can vary the number of each according to who you are fighting. When fighting other greeks I would have more missile troops and sword wielding inf than cav.
But usually I go with 5-7 pikemen, at least 4 cav units (again depending on what faction you are fighting), 2-4 inf either to watch the flank since your pikemen a slow at turning or to flank the enemy lines and then I fill up with missile troops. Hoplites and other pikemen are weak against javelins so when fighting other greeks as you would starting with macedon your missile troops should be in the front row. Either taking out your enemies missile troops or to soften up his troops making it easier for you to break through their lines. You can also choose to flank with your missile troops as you would with your cav or inf.
Your phalanxes can be stretched quite thin and still be able to hold the line so you can recruit more missile, cav or other inf to quickly make flanking manouvers. But always remember to keep your phalanx in an unbroken line. If flanked they will get slaughtered and your entire line will crumble. This is very important in online battles.![]()
Well I just got slapped around by the Raeti and Carthaginians in my campaign. I'm not very happy right now.

What Dresden linked is the manual which will give info about the mod. I'll be writing a guide about battles and maybe a campaign. But I also like to encourage people to post their guides here:

Oh, and every posted guide will get a rep train from the entire DeI team.
Trying to seduce us with mere rep are we, m_1512. Shame on you thinking we would give up our hard won battle tactics for such a low priceIm not some 14 year old girl that is going to get flattered just because you offer me a free happy meal. We are respectable players and we have honour. We want rep and a sweet little comment to go along with it. perhaps even a smiley
