    Default Poland struggle with alliances.

I started a new campaign as Poland on vh/vh and I found it incredibly difficult to get alliances with anyone besides Hungary. Is there any reason why the other factions don't like Poland?

On my previous campaign as Genoa, I could get alliances with the entire Italian penniless and eastern Europe. Do certain factions have troubles diplomatically because of historical reasons or something?

Poland is pretty weak in early period so not a lot of nations feel the need to ally a weak nation. Once you get stronger they will more likely accept. Try sending your diplomat and offering map information. Leave the demands blank and they will thank you for asking them what they want to give you in return. Whatever they offer you, counter it with like trade relations and mutual map information. If they accept that then go for alliance.
With that combo I've always had better luck, they seem to enjoy being asked what they want to give you for something (in this case your map info) rather than you demanding something in return. Puts things on the right foot.
You shouldn't need a whole lot of allies as Poland though, Hungary and the Pope should do, then if HRE, Denmark attacks you just play defence until pope who likes his ally Poland excommunicates the other guy. Should be able to handle Lithuania on your own, eventually Novgorod will join the party to your benefit, even if not allied.

Don't bother asking HRE for map info the larger the nation the more demanding they view it.

Ok thanks for the advice! I'm currently bordering HRE and campaigning against Lithuania. I'm sending a diplomat towards the french maybe I'll have more luck over there!

When trying to get an alliance, what matters most is your reputation and your current number of allies and enemies. During the first turns your reputation is OK and you are not at war with anyone. It should therefore be easy to get an alliance with one of your neighbours if you offer trade rights in return. Also, as a Catholic nation you should try and get an alliance with the Pope as soon as possible. Do not enter into any war before having allied with the Pope, and always keep that alliance running. Watch your reputation carefully and increase it by always having more allies than enemies.

Yes I've managed to get an alliance with the Papal States, hopefully when HRE decides to declare war on me I can convince the Pope to stay on my side with bribes. I'm going to keep a diplomat beside Rome for the whole campaign and avoid excommunication.
