Thread: How to effectively have "Pike and Shot" Battles

Default How to effectively have "Pike and Shot" Battles

I was wondering if anyone had any advice on how to fight battles in this mod. I've played empire for a while now, and I'd say I'm pretty seasoned, but the combat in this is so different. Like how do I effectively use line infantry, as it seems much more effective just to charge with pikes. Any Advice?

Well pike and shot included pikemen marching in front of the line infantry as protection. Try bogging down enemy pikemen in pike-pike battles while you fire at them from behind the pike lines or by using missile cavalry like harquebusiers and cuirassiers. Also the pikemen can't get at garrison infantry so try luring them to garrisoned buildings where you can shoot at them.

Also, do you have any suggestions in how to keep the battle from turning into an all-out brawl? It seems like all my battles end up just a large charge, as my line infantry cant effectively kill the enemy pikes and/or line infantry before they reach my lines.

Which is why you ought to indeed brawl with pikemen, and have line infantry fire from the flanks or sides, ideally.

A mobile war while using pike and shotte is possible. When I use it, I usually start the battle with the formation all ready to go. If the formation has to move, group the pikemen and the musketeers so that the pikemen march behind the musketeers. When you find your preferred spot, assemble the pike and shotte right there. It requires a little more micromanaging, but it can certainly be done, and a pike and shotte is a formidable opponent to infantry and cavalry alike.

Does anyone have enough knowledge of this era to answer this question:

Where did the musketeers actually retreat to? For example, in the below image

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

there doesn't seem to be any space for them to move into in order to be protected from cavalry. Any ideas?

To my knowledge they may have retreated behind the pikemen. The game Cossacks around 10 years ago simulating how the 17th century musketeer would retreat after firing. Also the Russian film 1612 has a good representation of Polish musketeers volley-firing whereby they shoot, then retire and are replaced by more musketeers to keep up the rate of fire. I have read though that historically, protecting the musketeers was a major role (maybe even the main one) in the 17th century.

So much to test I cannot give an answer. I'm only starting to understand diplomacy editing.

I've increased the size of units and have tried merging musket units in with a pike unit, in regular and square formation, it is really effective EXCEPT that the pike takes constant casualties from the musket unit within it. I've tried getting the front line of the musket unit just ahead of the pikemen themselves, still take casualties.

If there was a way mod that a unit on top of another doesn't shoot it, that it could be interesting, or even (I've heard rumors it was tried) actually making a pike and shot unit all in one. I'm going to research these possibilities.

Sounds crazy, would be very interesting to see.
