It's a sweet and seemly thing, yes?
I could jump up and say 'yes!' on a dime, but when I start to think about it, that assertion would assume I would agree with everything my government was doing.
If I join the military, I would steel myself to prepare for death whenever - I've made the choice the moment I join the armed forces. Before that, I'd have to choose if I agree with my government.
Even then, if I felt strongly about the war being necessary for the U.S., I would resign myself to face death for it.
Yes, if need be i will surrender my life, if the proper situation is deemed in need of it.

I think other people are stupid. In my country, decisions are made by the balance of other people. Why in God's name would I die because they make stupid decisions?
I'd die for my family, and I would die to save the right friends; but I wouldn't die without purpose.

I would die for America the idea, not America the country. That means that if somebody came and threw out the constitution and trashed all the ideals that had been considered "American" throughout its history, I would fight against him or her. Even if that meant fighting the organization who officially flies the American flag.

Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori is a line from the Roman lyrical poet Horace's Odes (iii 2.13). The line can be rendered in English as: "It is sweet and honourable to die for one's country," or: "It is sweet and fitting to die for the fatherland." In classical Latin it was pronounced, "dulcet decorumst pro patria mori," due to poetic elision and prodelision.
The line has been a commonplace in modern times throughout Europe. It was quoted by Simon Fraser, Lord Lovat immediately before his beheading on Tower Hill, London in 1747. It was much quoted in reference to the British Empire in the 19th century, particularly during the Boer War. Its initial three words have appeared as a book title. British rock group Kasabian inserted the line at the end of their video for "Empire", after their lead singer is shot by a firing squad.
During World War I, British poet Wilfred Owen wrote a poem entitled, "Dulce Et Decorum Est," in which the phrase was described as "the old Lie." The poem was written by Owen in response to a poem by Jessie Pope, a propagandist with limited talent, entitled "Dulce Et Decorum Est Pro Patria Mori". The latter was about the glory of dying for one's country.
Maybe in defensive war. And not for the government.

How absurd men are! They never use the liberties they have, they demand those they do not have. They have freedom of thought, they demand freedom of speech.

For my state and my city? Perhaps. Depends if we're being invaded, and by who. :hmmm:
For my loved ones? Definitely.

i forgot who said this, but most people would have no problem dying for their country, few are willing to kill for their country. if i support my government, i would have no problem "fighting" for my country, but if i am to die, so be it. imo, they should have a referendum everytime they want to start a war, but thats just my rusty ol .02c![]()
question is how far will my country go to do sumthin for me....atm it dont giv' a **** and i think i developed the same feeling..

Die for my country? Yeah. But I am certainly not convinced that serving in the US military presently would involve a sacrifice for our country. I respect and honor the people serving now, but I don't think that thier deaths are realy protecting americans here at home.
If France invaded Britain then I would be quite willing to die for Britain. If Britain invaded France I would be quite willing to die for France.
I might be idealistic, but not patriotic.
I would not be willing to die for my nation or its people. I would only be willing to die for my close ones.
