Default China angrily denounces "provocative" speechs from US and Japan

Of course anyone would be angry if they criticizing what others are doing at home.

China has denounced the Japanese PM and US defence secretary for making "provocative" speeches against China at an Asian security forum in Singapore.

Chinese army general Wang Guanzhong said Chuck Hagel and Shinzo Abe's comments at the Shangri-La Dialogue were "unacceptable".

Mr Hagel had earlier said China was "destabilising" the South China Sea.

Meanwhile, Japan's PM Shinzo Abe had vowed to give greater support to South-East Asian countries.

The forum, which brings together the US and South-East Asian countries, comes amid growing tensions between China, Vietnam and the Philippines, with Japan-China ties also strained over disputed islands in the East China Sea.

It is quite interesting the host country Singapore does not dare to say a thing at all, although I do hope the tension on South China Sea would not push all ASEAN seeks some sore of defensive pact with "outside" force.

Pot, meet kettle. Seriously, apart from their own domestic audience, who do the Chinese leadership think they're fooling? Want to talk about provocative? Let's talk about moving an oil rig into another nations EEZ...

Excellent mood music choice, by the way.

This is all about oil, obviously, as Dr. Zoidberg alludes. China needs to gobble up as much of it as she can, hence her sensitivity for being called out on aggressive moves to acquire oil in watery territories not considered her own. Neighboring countries have simply taken note.

Hopefully in a hundred years from now we will have largely weaned ourselves off of fossil fuels, avoiding conflicts like these over such vital resources that are the juice of the economy...and our mechanized vehicles.

Why was a there a senior military officer at this forum anyway!? Surely it is for politicians in the region to discuss issues they share. The army should not really be involved unless there is a potential conflict, and China can't be thinking that to have sent him surely?

It seems to me this senior officer (who's face doesn't look the least bit aggressive) was probably embarrased to have been put in this position at the recieving end of such a rebuke of his country and replied in a undiplomatic way. This crisis is not of the Chinese military's own doing, and their senior naval officers must worry at the potentilal problems they will have, from being instructed from their government to protect that oil rig and the associated shipping, without a minor incident escalating into a major international one.

However despite the radical economic changes in China, there continues to be a strong link between the military and government, which is dissimilar to most of the other countries in the region, with the exception of North Korea. One wonders to what extent are senior commanders involved in deciding actions such as the placement of this oil rig.

Given that the PRC doesn't have a civilian Department of Defence (although there is a civilian cadre within the PLA), and the political/policy work is done by uniformed PLA officers; outside of a member of the Politburo or the Standing Committee (e.g. the Foreign Minister, or Defence Minister), it was always going to be represented by a senior unformed officer,

If the Chinese want drinkable water, they move north in Siberia, and will be disputing the Himalayas with the Indians.

The US, Japan, Vietnam, PRC and all the other SEA countries are all trying to provoke each other, but i'm not concerned simply because it won't escalate beyond diplomatic shots since the PRC is a superpower and she has superiority over every country in their region.

Smear attacks to distract from the subject at hand are a rather poor way to debate the issue Exarch. You can't honestly deny that China's neighbors have legitimate concerns to say the least.

    where are the smear tactics?
    kindly point them out, please.

China's neighbours naturally have legitimate concerns, namely the disgusting behaviour of Japanese politicians towards victims of rape and sexual slavery in war:

You are bringing up the unrelated issue of Abe's stance and actions regarding Japan's war crimes during the 2nd WW and the 2nd Sino-Japanese war to smear him and distract from and discredit his statements regarding modern China's aggressive actions. I don't deny it is and issue but its not the one being discussed here.

That's ancient history, world war II was in a previous century for Christ sake, many people today (especially young people) hardly know that it ever happened, heck when I met my fiancé many years ago she was into swastika's without even knowing who Hitler was, it was just the cool thing the "cool and hot" people in American History X had (seriously that movie's anti neo nazi message was completely drowned out by the "neo nazi cool" I think it drove people into embracing it more than turning it away them, at least in Europe, A lot of skinheads I met took great effort in trying to look like Edward Norton and weren't into politics, just teens trying to be cool)

As for this whole matter nothing will happen, some threats and discussions, and then China will realise EU, US, Japan, are all paper tigers who wouldn't even dare taking action and just do what it feels like, we'll all cry outrage! and that's that, we didn't even stop Putin why would we stop the guys keeping our economy running and our Iphone's cheap...
